If you have a reactive dog you know how overwhelming it can be at times.
A few tips to make the process feel a little less daunting.
1. Decompression, if you've worked with me you've heard me say this 1 million times. Not just helpful but necessary in the training plan. For both of you. It won't help if they're calm and ready to go but you're stressed and tense.
2. Celebrate ANYTHING that is a step in the right direction, that may mean a successful outing to a coffee shop with your dog, a big win passing a dog at a new distance, or even just a whole day with no reaction. When we notice on the even the smallest step it shifts out focus. Oh and never compare yourself or your dog to anyone elses journey, each dog/situation is beautiful and unique.
3. Reactions happen, you will never be able
to control the environment perfectly, use this
information to help in the next encounter. Too close?
More distance next time. Everything was going great,
why did this happen, cut the training short next time
dont push the limits. Learn and move on.
4.Find time to enjoy them, to remember why you love them! Why you got a dog in the first place. Spending this quality time with them helps build the
relationship making it easier in a training setting for them to trust you and the process.
5.Take as many breaks as you and your dog needs, rushing doesn't do anyone any good.
6. YOU ARE NOT ALONE, I so often hear "I feel like I'm the only one with a reactive dog" it's because everyone else with a reactive dog is walking them in the dead of the night 😂 I promise they are everywhere.

You are doing a great job and your dog loves you ❤️

The beauty of our reactive group class is working people and dogs that are dealing with the same problem.

Moving forward in safe controlled environment with zero judgment. But small enough groups that it's still personalized.

Here were are today with Chester working on relaxing in a field. Mogu is working on getting a bit closer to dogs. And link is working on being calm with dogs at a distance!

I feel that it is important as a trainer to stay up to date on the current ethical methods and information on behaviour modification. Happy to share I have completed the aggression in dogs master course.

This is important to remember, it can be hard to resist as a dog lover. But each dogs has its own story and may not want to be approached and touched. Especially with the amount of rescues that have come in from other countries, some of these dogs are not used to being in cities and around people/other dogs. Or an irresistible little puppy, might be in training or working on socialization. And If you've worked with me in the past, you know that proper socialization does not involve saying hi to everyone!
