My Journey to becoming a Horseman
My story begins in northern British Columbia. In my early 20’s I became passionate about mountain climbing. This thirst for the high country took me to peaks all over B.C., NWT and New Zealand. From there it evolved into a passion for hunting mountain sheep, which in my opinion is the epitomy of adventure and hard work. This on going persuit for adventure and wild untouched places led me to horses. Before long I was up to 3 horses. Well on my way to building a pack string that would be destined for the headwaters of unknown creeks. As you could imagine there were some epic wrecks! Jumping in with both feet was not easy and it didn’t take me long to figure out that I needed some guidance. This led me to Donally’s Horse Barn in Fort St John, BC. There I met Kim Donally. An old rodeo cowboy/ packer/ guide/ Horseman/// and the list goes on. It was him who introduced me to a man that would change my life forever. Doug Mills and his Training Thru Trust program. It started out auditing his clinics and just snowballed from there. Now, 10 years later, horses are my life. The most monumental day in those 10 years was the day I decided money wasn’t everything in life. I quit my high paying job as a gas plant operator in the oilfield. The same day I got myself a job as a hunting guide for a horse outfit in the North West Territories. Since then I guided for 3 seasons in BC and NWT running my own camp with 15 horses, a junior guide, a wrangler, and a cook. I went to school and got a certificate for Log Home Building and Timber Framing at the Island School of Building Arts. I apprenticed as a farrier in Seattle, Washington. I’ve Worked on ranches from the San Raffel Desert in Utah to the Tomahawk Cattle Ranch in Tomahawk, AB. I rode pasture for Alberta’s Pembina Provincial Grazing Reserve. My favorite of all though, is, through all these side adventures, working tirelessly honing my skills as a horseman. I have completed course 1,2,and 3 of the Training Thru Trust program. I owe so much to this program. I met my wife, who is from Switzerland, at Doug’s place even. We have a beautiful daughter who was born in June, 2017. I now train horses full time at an indoor arena 1 km down the road from our little acreage. Life is good and I feel so blessed to be on this journey we call Horsemanship.
