The Scalare Angelfish (scientific name: Pterophyllum scalare) is one of the most popular and iconic species in the aquarium trade. It's a member of the Cichlidae family and native to the Amazon River basin in South America, particularly in countries like Brazil, Peru, and Colombia.
General Characteristics:
Size: They can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length, though their distinctive tall, triangular body shape can make them appear even larger.
Lifespan: In optimal conditions, they typically live between 10 to 15 years.
Coloration: Wild-type Scalare Angelfish are silver or light gray with vertical black stripes. In the aquarium trade, they come in a variety of colors and patterns, including gold, marble, and koi, due to selective breeding.
Body Shape: Their most notable feature is their elongated, disk-shaped body, which gives them an elegant, angelic appearance, with long, flowing fins.
Habitat and Tank Requirements:
Water Conditions: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5 to 7.5), soft to moderately hard water, and temperatures between 76°F and 84°F (24°C to 29°C).
Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a single angelfish, though a larger tank (at least 30 gallons) is ideal, especially if housing more than one.
Tank Setup: They prefer tanks with plenty of vertical space to accommodate their tall bodies. They enjoy aquascapes with plants, driftwood, and open swimming areas.
