Client tip of the month

May-
Tied horses. All farriers have different preferences when shoeing horses. If your horse is tied, please do so in a safe manner. Crossties should have a piece of bailing twine or similar on the wall attachment side. This will allow for things to break when needed and have a long section attached to the now loose horse. This isn’t the time to train a horse to tie and not pull back. Don’t tie your horse to the shed door handle.

We’ve recently had one of our farriers hurt in a way that could have been prevented. Let’s keep horses safe and farriers safe!

Horses can be easily startled by traffic, and rear up, pivot, “wheel” around, or bolt away. Also, if they misstep, they stumble to the side — it’s a natural part of their movement.

Both scenarios can be highly hazardous to humans – those in or on wheeled vehicles and those mounted on horseback – as well as the animal.

Make sure to slow down, reduce noise, and be patient when passing (widely). For more tips from TranBC, visit: https://bit.ly/3aWnoNk

It’s simple.

The farrier business provides a broader range of working situations and income possibilities than just about any trade or business.

The barefoot ‘debate’ is not a new one. However, with a number of elite performance horses now competing at the very highest levels without shoes the subject has once more come to the fore. The argument to shoe or not to shoe is rarely black and white and, at times when it is, is unethical. Equi...

"The Life Cycle of a Farrier"

Stole from another farrier but so ture

A Farriers career can start in a multitude of ways, some go to school some apprentice, some do both, some do neither.... either way there comes a time when a person ventures out on their own.

Most start working from the trunk of a car or the open bed of a pickup.... Skillset improves, client list grows, then comes the first decent rig... something that houses all tools and equipment and keeps everything out of the elements.... as time moves on, more experience is gained, better clients and horses start to come, then comes a bigger better rig with all the bells and whistles, then another and another and another (I've had six) then, in the blink of an eye, the 4th decade is coming to an end and the mindset starts to change dramatically..... the love for the job doesn't change, the enthusiasm declines though.... and the realization that the body is speaking loud and clear that there is an expiration date to this career, so, the larger accounts get let go, the clientele get cut in half, then cut in half again.... the fancy rig is no longer needed and it's back to the trunk of the car or the open bed of a pickup.

Life has a tendency to go full circle and it's never illustrated any better than the life of a Farrier... it's what a person does in preparation for careers end that matters the most.... either way, the legacy that one leaves behind is virtually in the palm's of their own hands.
