As you may have heard, there are new requirements when traveling with pets to the States. We have held off on commenting as the rules have been fluidly changing. With the set date of August 1, the CDC has announced recent changes again to these requirements. Below will be a link to the CDC Facebook post, but we recommend visiting the CDC website prior to any travel

Updates to CDC’s August 1 dog importation rule: If you are bringing a dog into the US from a dog rabies-free or low-risk country, you now only need to fill out the simple CDC Dog Import Form. Other forms are no longer needed. The requirements for dogs arriving from high-risk countries have not changed, and these dogs are still required to have additional documents. Read the full requirements: www.cdc.gov/dogtravel

Losing a furred, feathered, or scaled family member can be devastating. Sometimes, it can help to celebrate their life instead of their loss, and share their memory with others. Windsor Chapel Funeral Home along with St. John Ambulance will be hosting a memorial service on Wednesday, August 28, for those who wish to attend. Please see the event photo for more information on how to RSVP or visit Windsor Chapel Funeral Home on facebook ❀️

Ahead of the big show tonight, and this holiday weekend's fireworks, here are a few tips and tricks to help you and your pet make it through πŸŽ†

1. Leave them home. Even though your pet may appear calm, they may still be affected by the loud noise and vibrations. If your pet has never experienced fireworks before, it may also lead to a negative experience
2. Bring your pet outside for a last potty break before it gets dark, or call your pet back home if they are an outside roamer/ just like to hang out outdoors
3. Close windows and doors, including blinds. Some pets may become fearful and try to escape out open windows or doors (screens included), so don't give them the opportunity
4. Bring them to the quietest place in the house, this may be a basement or room with no windows
5. Play music in the background to try and cover the sound of the fireworks
6. Get activity toys, lick mats, or extra yummy treats ready to distract
7. Try a thundershirt, pheromone diffuser, or pet calming chew to help relax
8. For those pets that are extra fearful, speak with your vet about medication to use during anxiety producing events. If you already have some, make sure you have enough and that the medication has not expired

Hello, it's Dr. Scout coming to you with a hot tip on pet first aid kits! I travel a lot, and one of the things I always bring is my first aid kit. Below will be a list of important things to have in your own kit. Keep in mind this is not a fully inclusive list, but a great place to start:

- Plain Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) for bug bites/bee stings/allergies. Check with your vet about the correct dose for your pet
- A supply of any current medications πŸ’Š including flea and tick meds, if needed
- Bandaging materials, including non-stick gauze squares
- Nail trimmers and quick stop
- Tick remover
- A note with important phone numbers including the number to the closest emergency vet
- A rescue harness for larger pets
- Thermometer
- A nice bag/container to store everything in, that is easy to access
- If room allows, a small amount of food and water can help in certain situations, along with an extra leash or harness

Remember to always keep your kit updated and seek veterinary care as soon as you can if needed.

Disclaimer: I Scout, am not an actually DVM, but a willing participant. I have been paid heavily in treats πŸ˜‹

Let's not forget prevention for our kitties! As much as we prefer to have our fine feline friends inside, we understand that some just can't be contained 😸 Whether you have an indoor/outdoor cat that hangs out in the yard/catio or an outdoor kitty that roams the neighborhood, it's important to remember that they can pick up both external and internal parasites without even meeting another cat. πŸˆπŸˆβ€β¬›
Lucky for you and them, we have several options to help keep them protected, including a new topical product. Give us a call so we can help you find the best preventative for your adventure buddy.
🐱 If you follow us on Facebook and have any photos of your curious outdoor kitties, share a pic πŸ“Έ

You may have noticed we are finally getting some nice spring weather. With spring weather, we get spring pollens. If your pet's favourite dance is the itch shuffle, give us a call, so we can help sort out their bad dance moves. But keep in mind, it might not always be seasonal allergies. It could be their diet! πŸŒΏπŸ– Thankfully, we have many options to consider, and we'll help to pick the best route for your pet

IT'S VETERINARY RECEPTIONIST WEEK!!!! Everyone give a huge round of applause for our wonderful reception team. A quick, honorable mention to our RVT Meg who also helps in reception on Fridays as well.
From answering phones and making appointments to getting files ready for the day, to loving up your babies when they arrive and leave, we would be hard pressed without these amazing people. And don't get me started on all the other stuff they do...
Let see how many likes and kind words we can get by the end of the week ❀️

Duh nuh...duh nuh....duh nuh duh nuh duh nuh..... they lurk in the grass, awaiting you and your pet to eat as a tasty meal!! This was 1 of 5 that I picked off my dog on our walk today 😬

It's that time of year again when we worry much more about these nasty little external parasites called ticks, some more dangerous than others. If you and your pet venture out into parks, grassy areas, or the general wilderness, it's important to keep in mind that you may both be exposed to ticks and the diseases they may carry. Ticks like to hang out in these grassy areas, as it's much easier to catch a ride (and then a meal) from higher vantage points. They can also hitch hike and end up in less expected areas. Prevention is key in helping to keep your pet safe. And don't forget to check yourself, as ticks don't discriminate.

If you feel your pet is at risk, give us a call to discuss what prevention might be best for them. Keep in mind that not all tick preventatives are safe for cats.
Bonus note: Most tick preventatives help protect against fleas as well.

What is Heartworm?
To put it simple, Heartworm is a blood parasite that can affect dogs (and sometimes cats, although not as common) and is spread by mosquitos in warm weather. A mosquito can transmit this parasite after taking a blood meal from an infected animal, and then biting your pet afterwards. If left untreated, this parasite migrates to the heart and can cause serious health concerns for your pet. Signs of an infected pet may not show up until a heavy infection occurs. An infected pet can be treated, but that in itself can pose other concerns.

So what do you do?
A blood test is run on a yearly basis after mid April to ensure an infection has not already occurred (this test also checks for 3 tick borne diseases), and a once monthly heartworm preventative can be given between June - November or year round.

If you have any questions or would like to book an appointment, please phone at 519-966-1020.
