We had quite the interesting patient come in from Manitoba Animal Alliance rescue. Little Gizmo was rescued from up North and was presented with a few health issues upon examination/bloowork/urinalysis. So not only did we discovered that Gizmo has heartworm disease, but upon further testing with ultrasound he also had kidney worms. We had to go in surgically and perform a Nephrectomy to remove the kidney that had the Kidney worms.
Dogs ingest infected larvae usually from raw fish, which penetrate the bowel, travel to the liver and then travel to the (most commonly) right kidney. Some worms are found free floating in the abdomen during their migration. Gizmo had 2 floating worms and one large one living in his kidney. Now only having one kidney (dogs can live full lives with just one kidney), his next step is to rid his heartworms once he's healed from surgery. He will require giving a low dose parasiticide (adulticide) slowly over several months to slowly kill off the worms. If you kill them too fast they can die all at once and clog the heart and other arteries. Gizmo did great for his nephrectomy but still has quite the road ahead of him. Good thing he's always in such good spirits with such an amazing foster.
Two of our Technologists and two of our Doctors went up north to Norway House Cree Nation with Manitoba Animal Alliance dog rescue to help provide over 130 dogs with vet care. They worked long hours but left feeling so rewarded in being able to serve such an amazing community. They will be heading back for more clinics in the upcoming months to serve other communities in Manitoba.
Special thanks to Dr. Aaron Mooi, Dr. Charmaine Ilano and technicians Michelle and Vero. They were also joined by Dr. Kate Gardiner and technician, Meaghan Wall from Winkler Veterinary Clinic.

Happy Sunday! We wanted to share this amazing video for all of the followers of Soffie’s case.
Since we are closed today, one of our technicians is in taking care of her this morning. Tara was able to take her outside without much fuss. She’s enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. She’s starting to be more trustful and it’s one day at a time. She’s not out of the woods yet. She has a large incision that still needs to be monitored closely especially since she had maggots. She will remain in hospital yet for quite some time. She also tested positive for Lyme disease and will require antibiotic treatment as well.
Now here’s the most amazing part. She’s outside with a toy and we actually got some tail wags. AMAZING progress. We love you Soffie girl. You got this. ❤️
