Sixteen days until the Spring Equinox, and seeding is underway here . We typically start with some of the longer germinating herbs, allium, and celery. We start all our own plants from seed, except rosemary and mint. That's because mint doesn't come true from seed (it will revert back to its less flavourful mint grand-daddy) and rosemary is notoriously hard to germinate. Still, by the time planting begins, hundreds of trays will fill every nook and cranny of our seeding greenhouse. We'll post a pick once it's jam packed๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฑLet the 2024 season begin!

Nineteen days to the Spring Equinox, and here are some basic facts about our CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) program:
๐Ÿ’š Our CSA provides you with a box of fresh, seasonal vegetables each week for 16 weeks.
๐Ÿฅฆ Each box includes a wide variety of vegetables, all grown here, by us. We grow 40 different vegetables and 20 different herbs each season.
๐Ÿฅฌ The boxes can be picked up at one of three locations: Wolseley, River Heights, and on our farm in St. Norbert.
๐Ÿง„ Boxes typically begin the second or third week of June, depending on the weather.
๐Ÿซ‘ We pride ourselves on the quality of the vegetables we provide to you.

Twenty days to the Spring Equinox, and let's talk about the first of our promises to you.
๐ŸŒฑ We are "all natural" growers. What does that mean? The word "natural" is used to greenwash all kinds of products, so we need to be clear about what it actually means for us. For us, it means that we completely follow all organic standards, though we have chosen not to certify organic. We use barriers like net and fabric to keep pests off our plants, let nature do her work by introducing beneficial insects when the pest pressure threatens the crop, and use only organic-approved sprays, and then only as a last resort.
๐Ÿ› We believe that there has to be a balance between the needs of the natural world and our needs as producers. So swallowtail caterpillars are allowed to eat their share of the parsley and dill ๐Ÿ™‚ It doesn't mean we don't take action (using organic methods) to manage pests when they threaten to destroy a crop. That's the reality of market gardening. But we do our very best to do that with care and consideration.
๐ŸŒ We've always loved the diagram that shows humans as just one element in the circle of nature, and not at the top of the pyramid. And that's how we've rolled since day one, nearly two decades ago. ๐Ÿ’š

When winter comes, and this forest next door becomes my daily walking place, I often think of this poem by Robert Frost. It describes better than I can our chosen path that lead us to be here on this market garden farm. It's not clear by the end of the poem if his chosen path comes with regret, but I think I can safely say ours does not.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and Iโ€”

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Fondue night.
