So this tray of rosemary seedlings has me pretty excited 😍 Rosemary is notoriously hard to start from seed. I purchased "primed" seed this year with dreams of many gorgeous rosemary plants.🌿What is primed seed, you ask? Priming a seed means the seed has been carefully soaked and then dried at just the right time. This initiates germination without letting the seedling emerge. The result is seed that germinates faster and more reliably. Rosemary typically germinates in 14 to 21 days, with poor germination rates (in other words the percentage of seeds that actually sprout is very low). This tray germinated in 6 days, is seeing abou 80% germination, and that's a huge win!

Have you heard of Tiny Monster Garden Seeds .monster.garden ??? We're excited to say we'll be growing some tomatoes for seed for them this year. Why buy seeds from a local seed producer? The advantage of locally grown seeds is that they are harvested from plants grown here. Each generation of seeds improves in adaptation to its environment, which means these plants will do great in our challenging climate conditions. Plus all Tiny Monster seeds are Heirloom seeds. That means no GMO seeds from these folks! And, of course, they are Manitoban and that keeps your purchase power here in our province and country. Be sure to check out all their seed varieties!!

Sixteen days until the Spring Equinox, and seeding is underway here . We typically start with some of the longer germinating herbs, allium, and celery. We start all our own plants from seed, except rosemary and mint. That's because mint doesn't come true from seed (it will revert back to its less flavourful mint grand-daddy) and rosemary is notoriously hard to germinate. Still, by the time planting begins, hundreds of trays will fill every nook and cranny of our seeding greenhouse. We'll post a pick once it's jam packed🌱🌱🌱Let the 2024 season begin!
