Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. Today is a day recognizing and celebrating the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Indigenous peoples of Canada. Happy First Day of Summer! It is finally here! If you are wanting to include your furry friend in the outdoor festivities this summer, please remember to keep them cool and hydrated!
Did you know? Heat stroke can happen to animals, just like in humans! Here are some helpful tips to keep those fur babies cool on hot summer days!

REMEMBER! Please do not leave your pet in a parked or turned off vehicle for any amount of time! If you observe an animal suffering in the heat, contact The WHS Emergency Line at 204-982-2020 ASAP!

Meet Dallas🐾 and her ✨temporary ✨headwear!

Dallas presented to our hospital after rough housing with his fur sibling! During their fun, her ear was nicked.
Dogs tend to have a tendency to shake their head when the ear feels “funny.”
When an injury is on the ear and they shake their head, the injury is prone to opening again due to the momentum! With that, the ear has a lot of blood vessels and so the area bleeds a lot🩸, even with smaller/minor cuts. To prevent this during the healing process and allow the ear to stay stationary during Dallas’ daily activities, our team ensured Dallas went home with antibiotics and a stylish cap! 🧢

Meet Wayne! 🐾🐈‍⬛ Wayne visits us here at Bridgwater for a routine nail trim once every 1-2 months. Wayne was a very good boy for his nail trim and enjoyed many treats. ❗️ Fun fact❗️Wayne was adopted with small ears 👂

May 6th- May 10th is Mental Health Awareness Week 🧠 Our Bridgwater team spent a few moments outside together in the sunshine sharing laughs with staff pets Turtle Dove and Kenna ☀️🐾 Alek, a Vetstrategy team member, lost his battle with depression in 2021. In honour of his memory Vetstrategy launched Aleks’ Promise, a national program to address mental health and limit stressors impacting animal health professional daily.

Keeping Aleks’ Promise means making sure everyone who walks through our doors is met with grace, empathy and patience. It means bringing each other up, so our Hospitals remain safe and supportive places for all. It also means we cannot tolerate any actions that break his promise.

Together we can honour Aleks’ life by bringing kindness in tow, wherever we go 🤍

Today is Overnight Appreciation Day/Night!!! Last night and tonight we are celebrating our overnight team! We are so appreciative of our overnight team! Without them, we would not be able to be open 24/7 for you, and your pets! Fueled by caffeine, and snacks, they are here for your pets all night! We celebrated by having a snack and candy bar! Thank-you team for all that you do 🧡💙

The correct answer is…HAIR ELASTICS! 15 to be exact. Not including the 8 that he vomited at home.
Kurama came to our clinic for vomiting up hair elastics. His X-ray revealed a stomach FULL of them! Dr. Shapera was able to remove all of the hair ties from his stomach with a scope. Endoscopy is sometimes utilized as a minimally invasive approach to removing foreign objects from the stomach!
This big guy warmed our hearts and we are happy to report he is doing great at home, where they have locked away any hair elastics for the foreseeable future 😉

STAFF PET SATURDAY! This one is a memorial staff pet saturday feature! Everyone meet: Caillean AKA Caillea. She was owned and loved by one of our lead receptionists Cara and her family! Cara says:

"She was a fun-loving girl, and made it to age 19 years and 11 months old!!! She was just one month short of 20! She is a Havanese Cockapoo mix. Her favorite past time was playing with her siblings, and putting on her puppy dog eyes to try to get extra food"

She looks like she was such an amazing dog! Thanks for sharing her! Nice to meet you Caillea!

Next for National Specially-abled pet's day is Dakota!!!! Her family says: "Dakota was paralyzed from falling off a bed, she couldn’t walk or go to the bathroom. Luckily we were able to get her into weekly physical therapy. With the help of medication, therapy, at home exercise's, and a wheelchair, she was able to relearn how to walk and enjoy life again"

Next up! BELLE!

"Belle adopted us several months ago. She is 10 years old, and a delight to have around. She is great with her "brother cat" and a wonderful addition to our family. She was born with a limb that did not develop, and one of her back hip joints is all but gone. So she needs regular visits to a specialist veterinarian. She has a few more things we are working on with a dog trainer. Despite her challenges she has the most wonderful, quirky, fun personality. We love her to bits. We give thanks for her additional helpers (the vet care, her trainer etc).
Specially-able pets have a lot of love to give."

Today is National Specially-abled Pets Day! This day shines a spotlight on the needs of pets with disabilities. We'd like to celebrate by sharing some of our rehabilitation patients success stories! Grab those tissues!

First up: This is Maja! Her family says: "She is a sweet cockerspaniel/Pomeranian mix that has IVDD. She's been seeing Dr. Ball and Meaghan for several years now. There was a point when she first had an IVDD episode that we weren't sure if she was ever going to be able to walk again. Dr. Ball has helped us through a few flare ups, and we are SO thankful ♥️"

Staff Pet Saturday is back! Sorry we missed last weekend! This weeks feature is Mountain (American bulldog)! She belongs to our Veterinary Assistant Rachelle! She says:

"Mountain was 14 months when we first got her. We went to Ontario for a week vacation, and were asked to take this dog, as the owner wanted to surrender her. She wasn't in a great situation, and after meeting our other dog, who was with us camping, and they got along, so home she came with us back to Manitoba. She is now 6 years old and is still full of energy, loves to be right beside you on the couch and is our wild beast. We have since brought her back to Ontario for a visit as she had a lot of people who cared for her and this time she got along with dogs she previously fought with. She is a very happy girl and loves her butt scratches!"

Mountain is also a blood donor for the Canadian Animal Blood Bank! Her donation is so greatly appreciated! It's so nice to meet you Mountain 🐶🩷

This week is National Veterinary Reception Week! Yesterday we celebrated with a build your own frozen yogurt snack, and each receptionist got some appreciation gifts! Pictured are just a portion of our amazing front of house team! This crew is crucial to the team because they are the "front lines"! They not only answer phones, emails, greet clients, and give your pets lots of love when you come in, but they also help triage your pet in times of emergent situations. They are multi-tasking ninjas! We are so appreciative of this front of house team! THANK-YOU!!!

It's that time of year again where we are starting our yearly flea, tick, and soon enough heartworm prevention medications.

Did you know ticks remain active even in chilly temperatures as low as 4°C, and they can survive in microclimates year-round?

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of encountering ticks, fleas, heartworms, worms, and other pesky parasites. Shielding your pet from these threats involves administering parasite prevention and devising a customized plan tailored to local risks, your household and family circumstance, and your pet's lifestyle.

Lyme/Heartworm tests are recommended to be done yearly! These tests are quick and easy! We just need a blood sample, and the results can be ready in 10 minutes! Tests can be booked in with one of our veterinary technologists, or can be done at your pets annual exam with a doctor as well. We are offering Lyme/Heartworm testing days for April, as well as some in May. The upcoming dates are:

It's time for Toebeans! Did you know that Cats are famous for their ability to land on their feet after falls. Their skeletal systems are adapted for absorbing impacts, and their toe beans play a role as well. When a kitty jumps or falls, the toe beans act as shock absorbers, helping them slow down or control their momentum.

Staff Pet Saturday time!!! Another double feature this week! Meet Eevee (the Calico), and Ethan. They belong to our Veterinary Technologist Selena!

She says: "They were both rescues that I found at my grandparents place outside of the city, I knew it was meant to be because they were super easy to catch. Ethan was in a metal pipe and Eevee was in a cage."

It does sound like it was truly meant to be! They seem to be loving life that is for sure! Nice to meet you Eevee, and Ethan!

And last but certainly not least, today we celebrate 3 RVTs who make us all laugh; Charmaine, Danelle and Anna! Happy RVT Month ladies!! Char, a recent addition to our team comes to us with experience working with different species of pet. After graduating in 2015, she spent a year in research working with various animals before moving to the town of Arborg Manitoba where she worked with both small and large animals. Char then returned to the city and begin her career in emergency medicine. Danelle, also a recent addition to our team, graduated in 2014 with a huge interest in emergency medicine. During her spare time Danelle volunteers at spay/neuter/vaccine clinics around Manitoba for various rescues and organizations. She enjoys being able to apply her skills to help communities and families who are less fortunate and don't have access to veterinary care for their pets. Anna has worked for the Winnipeg Veterinary Care Group since 2011. She started as a volunteer before becoming an RVT. Anna is currently finishing her pre-veterinary studies. Her main areas of interest are behaviour, nutrition and emergency medicine. Anna is also a Fear Free Certified Professional. These ladies are dedicated caregivers who are committed to caring for your pet as if they were there own. They strive to make sure that your pet is stress and anxiety free at every visit!
