Canine Blood Donation
‼️Blood and needle warning‼️
The Canadian Animal Blood Bank had another successful visit to Tuxedo Animal Hospital on Thursday, where six wonderful dogs donated blood and helped save lives! ❤️🩸
CABB is always in search of new donors. If your dog meets the donor criteria and enrolls in the program, they will receive a complimentary Heartworm & Lyme test prior to their first donation, and a free microchip on their second donation!
Upon arrival at the donor clinic, a CABB technologist will collect a small blood sample for blood typing. Once they’re ready, your dog will need to lay still on their side for 5 minutes while their blood is collected. (See Aspen being the best girl while she donates blood!🥰) Of course, your pup will receive lots of treats and praise for their generous donation! 🎉
Thank you to the staff and volunteers @dogsdonate and to the owners and pets who donate their time, efforts, and blood for dogs in need.
If you’d like more information about the blood bank and where the next donor clinics will be held, visit the CABB website at http://www.canadiananimalbloodbank.ca

Happy Friday! Adorable Sinimin was able to pick a prize from our Christmas tree for coming in for his Annual exam/vaccines. His prize revealed a free bag of treats. We figured we would let Sinimin choose which ones he wanted 🤣🐶

*If your pet doesn’t like the taste of the chews, wrap it in something yummy like cheese or peanut butter.😋

Vet tech Carlie demonstrating how much pus a dog’s uterus can hold.
Gross but fascinating: watch as Tuxedo Animal Hospital veterinarians implant an intrascleral prosthetic into the eye of a patient with uncontrollable glaucoma. He will be feeling much better very soon!
WARNING: THE GROSSEST VIDEO YOU WILL SEE ALL DAY...
What happens when you don't spay your female cat? Pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection that causes a normally empty organ with the diameter of a pencil to fill with copious amounts of pus. Fortunately, this patient is feeling much better now. Oh, and please forgive our enthusiasm over lancing this thing. What can we say? Vets and techs just really, really love pus.
Here's something gross from under the microscope: watch as this satiated louse digests a recent blood meal from a domestic rat who presented to us for itchy skin earlier today.
Its May 1st and we've already diagnosed our first heartworm positive dog of the year. Here's a video of heartworm larvae in a drop of this patient's blood. Be sure to pick up Revolution, Interceptor, Heartgard, or Sentinel before the season starts on June 1st.
REALLY GROSS VIDEO!! Not for the faint of heart!
This dog had a botfly larva living under it's skin, breathing through a tiny airhole, which was skillfully removed, as depicted here.
In the host (usually a rabbit or squirrel, in this case a dog), the larva enters the body through the mouth or nose during grooming or, less commonly, through open wounds. It then migrates to an area just below the skin where it develops and communicates with the air through a breathing pore.
After ~30 days, this larva would have fallen to the ground and pupated.
That is, if it hadn't met Dr. Pat Dorval: Larva Assassin...
June 1 marks the beginning of heartworm season, so remember to give your dogs (and outdoor cats) their first dose of preventive medication today. We just diagnosed our first heartworm positive patient of the year - check out this video from our microscope of an actual baby heartworm swimming in a drop of this dog's blood:
