Today we say a tearful goodbye to the longest working employee Tuxedo Animal Hospital has had, Jenn Dakin. Jenn has been at Tuxedo since she graduated from the Animal Health Technology program 26 years ago. Her thoughtfulness, skill, and expertise in her career have made her an unforgettable asset to TAH. Jenn has made a lasting impact not only on her coworkers, but on all the clients and pets she’s helped over the years. She has been a part of our northern clinics, aiding pets and families who do not have access to veterinary care. She has a knack for canine and feline dentistry, helping further other coworkers’ and students’ technical skills. As many of you may know, Jenn also has a passion for canine reproduction. She has worked closely alongside Dr. Stewart-Hay, assisting in breeding a number of beautiful healthy puppies and educating others on ethical breeding standards.
Although it is hard to imagine Tuxedo Animal Hospital without Jennifer Dakin, we’ll be sure to give her a call when a cute Golden Retriever or Cocker Spaniel comes in (or when a Backstreet Boys song comes on the radio).
We’ll miss you and we love you, Jenn! We wish you all the best in this next chapter. ❤️❤️❤️

(Don’t worry, it’s just sparkling apple juice in the pictures! 🤣)

Happy Valentine’s Day! 💗

Can you guess what’s in the first picture? Hint: it’s not liquorice.
Answer below…

If you guessed kidney worm🪱, you are correct!
Pepper was rescued by from Beren’s River, Manitoba. They were suspicious that Pepper may have kidney worms, as infected raw fish or frogs can pass the parasite to canines when consumed.
On ultrasound her kidneys appeared normal and there were no eggs seen in her urine (which is how kidney worm infections are typically diagnosed).
So, Dr. Bongiorno was slightly surprised to find this visitor swimming around in Pepper’s abdominal cavity during her spay! The worm must’ve gotten lost and hadn’t made it to the kidney yet, where they normally travel to.
Pepper is such a lovely girl and gave us puppy dog eyes and kisses after removing her 3ft long “friend”. 😅❤️

Just in time for National Cat Health Month, we have some tips to help ease stress on both sides when bringing in your feline friends.
There's no shame in being a "scaredy cat" we understand that new environments can be frightening for our companions.
Working with them instead of against them is the key in these situations.
How can we do that? There are a few ways!
♥ The carrier can be a big stress inducer for a lot of cats. The sight of the carrier to them means a stressful event is coming. Leaving the carrier out as a hangout spot for them or bringing it out a week prior to visits is a great way to make them feel more comfortable around it.
♥ The power of association is strong!
Promoting play by putting toys and familiar-smelling items in the carrier the week prior to appointments can help them feel safe in the carrier.
♥ Positive reinforcement goes a long way! A tasty treat will often win over hearts. Treating your pet to a snack they love (in moderation, of course) before, during, and after appointments leaves them feeling rewarded and helps take their mind off the situation they're in.
♥ A nervous cat needs time; rushing in too quickly can scare them off more, sometimes leading them to be more fearful of future events. Sit nearby, give lots of pets if that is something they enjoy, reward with treats, and do your best to take it slow.
We care about you and your pets comfort and we are here to help!

⚠️Warning: graphic images⚠️

Kylo Ren was a true warrior when he came in last month for an emergency exploratory surgery. 💪
When Kylo suddenly started vomiting pieces of ribbon, his mom (one of our attentive technologists at Tuxedo) made sure to bring him to the clinic promptly. On x-ray we could see that he had a linear foreign body, as shown by the intestinal plication (bunching of guts).
Linear/long foreign bodies can be particularly worrisome, as the plication can reduce blood flow to the intestines, causing the tissue to die or become compromised. As well, if the linear material tightens and puts pressure on the intestines, there is potential for the material to cut through the intestinal walls. ‼️For this reason, it is important not to abruptly pull out any ingested string from your pet’s mouth or re**um without consulting your veterinarian.‼️
Fortunately, Dr. Torske and Dr. Pura worked together to carefully remove almost 2 feet of ribbon from Kylo’s small intestine before any complications occurred. In order to safely remove all of the ribbon, they had to make multiple small enterotomies (incisions into the intestines) and gently pull the ribbon out piece by piece.
During the recovery period for these cases, feeding smaller more frequent meals of easily digestible food helps ensure that the digestive tract has a chance to heal.
We are happy to report that Kylo is back to his normal self, stealing food instead of ribbons. ❤️We’d also like to note that Kylo is maybe too smart for his own good, as he was only able to get to the ribbon after forcefully opening the lid to the plastic storage container. 😼

With the above normal temperatures we are having, don’t be surprised if you find a tick!

At 0°C ticks start looking for an animal or person to feed on for a blood meal. Ticks can survive the winter under snow, leaf litter and brush.

It’s important during this mild weather that you are doing daily tick checks. Start at your pet’s head, use your fingers like a comb and run your hands over the pet’s entire body. You are feeling for lumps or bumps you previously did not notice. Make sure to check under your pet’s collar, inside groin area, ears (inside and out), and under your pets front legs. It’s also important to examine under your pet’s tail and between his toes.

If you are in need of tick prevention give us a call at 204-488-1843. If your pet has not had an exam with one of our vets in the last 12 months you will require an appointment.

Garfield was a little upset about having to wear a cone after his neuter today, but quickly forgave us when he got his post-op snack!😻

His procedure was more involved than a typical cat neuter, as one of his testicles had not descended into his sc***um. An additional small incision was made through the skin in the inguinal area, where the testicle was located and removed.

We wish Garfield a speedy recovery and lots more snacks from his loving adoptive family at home! ❤️

Thank you to Grateful Friends Animal Rescue for helping Garfield and many other animals. 🐱🐶
Spaying and neutering your pet helps reduce the amount of overpopulation and homeless animals by preventing unwanted litters. It also helps reduce the chances of certain tumours and cancers from developing.

If you are looking to get your cat or dog spayed/neutered, please contact us at 204-488-1843 or [email protected]

While your pets’s mouth may be free of signs of advanced dental disease such as loose or broken teeth and look relatively “normal”, the gunk on their teeth is just the tip of the dental iceberg. Often bad breath may be the only sign of an issue.

Dental disease that lurks under the gumline can compromise your pet’s overall health, comfort, longevity, quality of life, and the way they enjoy time with you. Learn how to help slow the course of dental disease in your pet:
