Sigh. Another got another panicked phone call about the "Salmonella Outbreak related to raw dog food" articles that have been published. First, not an outbreak. 40 random cases over the past 4 years, from Manitoba to PEI of salmonella.
An outbreak is a cluster of cases with a common source. This is not an "outbreak". In no instance were more than 4 people in any month affected. Second, there are no confirmed cases that are linked to raw pet food. Just a conjecture that some of the cases *might* have been exposed to raw dog food, or dogs fed a raw diet, or to cattle.
I have no doubt that these people were also exposed to other salmonella risk items, like lettuce, spinach, ground beef, or dozens of other items that may harbour bad bacteria, including dry dog foods (anyone following this page saw the recent references that show studies that found ALL dry dog foods they tested carry bad bacteria.
So ANY of these are the possible cause of each of these separate, unrelated individual infections. The PHAC article references how to properly handle raw pet foods, recommendations we make with any of our new raw feeding clients, and all common sense raw meat handling procedures, whether it be pet food or people food.
Please, do not be alarmed by this "report", it is not an "outbreak", and you are not at risk from a bad batch of raw pet food. I'm not sure who was responsible for creating this, but it sure stinks of corporate/political influence through lobbying by those that are against the truth of raw feeding.
Please read the article below, rather than the "news" feeds, and you will see that this is not an outbreak, not are there any concrete links to raw dog food, just unsubstantiated conjecture.d conjecture.
An outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to an outbreak in the United States is under investigation.
