Meet Tuka! She is looking for a very specific forever family!
Tuka is a 1.5 year old, female Boston Terrier/French Bulldog mix. She has been spayed and all her vaccines are up to date. We have had her heartworm tested and she is on heartworm prevention for the season.
Tuka came into the rescue's care as a surrender back in early April.
The current owner was no longer able to give her the exercise and training she needed. Tuka was given to her from a young family with small children and she kept escaping their yard as they had no way to properly contain her.
Tuka never received any training with this young family as a puppy, so her owner worked hard on teaching her basic puppy training, but she knew Tuka, being a mix of active and stubborn breeds, needed a more disciplined and active home, which she could not provide.
Here are the important things that Tuka's new family will need to know about her behavior and activity needs:
1. Tuka has a very high prey drive. She will not be adopted to a family with a cat(s), small pets such as (bunnies, hamsters, gerbils, etc.), or birds. Tuka has no recall and is a high flight risk. She will look for an escape route from a fenced yard. She has gotten out once, by accident from the foster home and went running for many blocks before she was able to be cornered and caught. This girl loves to run and there is no amount of positive reinforcement, food, toys or anything that will get her to come back to you once she is free. A FULLY FENCED, SECURED YARD IS REQUIRED. There is no exception to this requirement. The rescue/foster will be inspecting all potential families homes that are interested before we select the BEST family for Tuka. She will not be going to the first family that applies to adopt her. All applications will be reviewed and interviewed with inspections of the home and yard.
2. Tuka needs lots of exercise. She currently gets two walks a day, depending on the weather conditions. She is an active girl and would do well with an active home. She could likely learn how to walk/run on a treadmill with proper training/time, which would be beneficial in the winters.
3. Tuka needs a home that understands her personality and will continue to keep up a daily routine. Tuka currently lives with a male Bulldog and after proper introductions and lots of training with the foster, these two have become good friends. They have learned how to play with toys properly and share time for attention. (Tuka is a vocal dog, so she sounds like she is growling, but she is just very vocal in her play).
4. Tuka needs to be kenneled when no one is home. This is a requirement to keep her and your home safe. When she came into the rescue's care, Tuka had no concept of what a kennel was and quickly learned that it was a safe place for her to rest and get away when she needed a break. After a few days, she was fully trained to be in her kennel. Tuka knows her daily routine and when the foster gets ready to go to work, she knows to go into her kennel and she gets a treat.
5. Tuka would do best in a home with children over the age of 14 years old. This girl is very strong and could knock over younger children very easily. Also, because of her flight risk, we can't enforce enough how important that everyone in the home understands her desire to get out and run. She will continue to need training throughout her life and positive reinforcement. Tuka could be enrolled in training classes with a trainer to continue to learn new techniques to work on her excitement and play with other dogs.
6. Tuka would do best with a dog larger than her. Smaller dogs may get bowled over during play. A larger breed dog would match her energy level and strength. If there was a smaller breed dog in the home, it would need to be a good match for Tuka. She has come a long way since her arrival in April from no training to a lot of new rules. Proper introductions to all dogs will be very important.
If you are interested in learning more or meeting Tuka, the first step will be to complete an adoption application.
Please email us at [email protected] for an application to be emailed to you. All applications will be reviewed and only families that we feel may be a good fit will move onto the next stage in our adoption process.
Thank you for reading this and for understanding why we are going to be very picky on selecting a forever home for Tuka.
She is a very special dog with lots of love to give, but needs the right family that will continue to work with her and understand her special behavioral needs.
