Happy Canada Day!

We're so grateful for all of the support shown to those who were evacuated due to wildfires.
With evacuees beginning to return home, all the pets we were housing will be back with their families, and we'll be closing our pop-up shelter Thursday, June 26.

Remember Kash? Well he needs some cash, or the rescue does to help pay for an unexpected procedure.

This sweet boy is settling into his foster home (soon to be forever home), but on Saturday he had a follow up with another vet and they have confirmed that he has a heart murmur and needs to have a cardiac ultrasound ($540) done before we can schedule his neuter and potential nares/elongated palate surgeries.

What does this mean for us?? We need some help. We have many dogs in care right now and many of them are getting their medical issues addressed, which is great but it's not easy on our bank account.

Our largest event of the year is in less than two weeks, but we already had a balance at our vet clinic and with two dogs in for surgery today (Frank with a dental (16 teeth removed) and palate/nares surgery - $3400 estimate) and Frankie in for his neuter and nares surgery (unsure of financial amount yet) the money we fundraise is going to be used up pretty fast. This doesn't include Frankie's upcoming leg amputation, Olive's appt with the True North Eye Veterinary Clinic, her spay/nares/palate surgery and Abby's yet to be scheduled dental cleaning with extractions surgery.

We rarely ask for help! We try to do lots of fundraising to offset our vet bills as we know the adoption fees don't cover all the vet care we put into the dogs to get them healthy.

How can you help?

Make a small donation of $5 towards Kash, Frankie, Olive, Abby and Frank's current and upcoming vet care. $5 isn't much but it adds up quickly when we have many of our followers making a donation.
Every little bit helps us get these dogs healthy.

Donations can be made via EFT to [email protected], PayPal or even made on our rescue account at Southglen Veterinary Hospital!

If you are unable to make a donation please consider sharing this post on your page in hopes it may reach someone that can help out this group of dogs.

Thank you for taking the time to read and share this post.

Meet Tuka! She is looking for a very specific forever family!

Tuka is a 1.5 year old, female Boston Terrier/French Bulldog mix. She has been spayed and all her vaccines are up to date. We have had her heartworm tested and she is on heartworm prevention for the season.

Tuka came into the rescue's care as a surrender back in early April.
The current owner was no longer able to give her the exercise and training she needed. Tuka was given to her from a young family with small children and she kept escaping their yard as they had no way to properly contain her.

Tuka never received any training with this young family as a puppy, so her owner worked hard on teaching her basic puppy training, but she knew Tuka, being a mix of active and stubborn breeds, needed a more disciplined and active home, which she could not provide.

Here are the important things that Tuka's new family will need to know about her behavior and activity needs:

1. Tuka has a very high prey drive. She will not be adopted to a family with a cat(s), small pets such as (bunnies, hamsters, gerbils, etc.), or birds. Tuka has no recall and is a high flight risk. She will look for an escape route from a fenced yard. She has gotten out once, by accident from the foster home and went running for many blocks before she was able to be cornered and caught. This girl loves to run and there is no amount of positive reinforcement, food, toys or anything that will get her to come back to you once she is free. A FULLY FENCED, SECURED YARD IS REQUIRED. There is no exception to this requirement. The rescue/foster will be inspecting all potential families homes that are interested before we select the BEST family for Tuka. She will not be going to the first family that applies to adopt her. All applications will be reviewed and interviewed with inspections of the home and yard.

2. Tuka needs lots of exercise. She currently gets two walks a day, depending on the weather conditions. She is an active girl and would do well with an active home. She could likely learn how to walk/run on a treadmill with proper training/time, which would be beneficial in the winters.

3. Tuka needs a home that understands her personality and will continue to keep up a daily routine. Tuka currently lives with a male Bulldog and after proper introductions and lots of training with the foster, these two have become good friends. They have learned how to play with toys properly and share time for attention. (Tuka is a vocal dog, so she sounds like she is growling, but she is just very vocal in her play).

4. Tuka needs to be kenneled when no one is home. This is a requirement to keep her and your home safe. When she came into the rescue's care, Tuka had no concept of what a kennel was and quickly learned that it was a safe place for her to rest and get away when she needed a break. After a few days, she was fully trained to be in her kennel. Tuka knows her daily routine and when the foster gets ready to go to work, she knows to go into her kennel and she gets a treat.

5. Tuka would do best in a home with children over the age of 14 years old. This girl is very strong and could knock over younger children very easily. Also, because of her flight risk, we can't enforce enough how important that everyone in the home understands her desire to get out and run. She will continue to need training throughout her life and positive reinforcement. Tuka could be enrolled in training classes with a trainer to continue to learn new techniques to work on her excitement and play with other dogs.

6. Tuka would do best with a dog larger than her. Smaller dogs may get bowled over during play. A larger breed dog would match her energy level and strength. If there was a smaller breed dog in the home, it would need to be a good match for Tuka. She has come a long way since her arrival in April from no training to a lot of new rules. Proper introductions to all dogs will be very important.

If you are interested in learning more or meeting Tuka, the first step will be to complete an adoption application.

Please email us at [email protected] for an application to be emailed to you. All applications will be reviewed and only families that we feel may be a good fit will move onto the next stage in our adoption process.

Thank you for reading this and for understanding why we are going to be very picky on selecting a forever home for Tuka.

She is a very special dog with lots of love to give, but needs the right family that will continue to work with her and understand her special behavioral needs.

Frank (aka Frankie) is sporting some new wheels! His foster mom didn't want him to be left out on group walks with his foster siblings so she ordered a dog stroller.

Frank is still figuring it out and is getting used to it while he recovers. He is in good spirits and the swelling has come down a smidge. He has a vet appointment on Saturday for vaccines and a recheck on the leg to discuss next steps.

Please send healing vibes and get well soon wishes to Frank.

2025 Manitoba Pet Expo Cash Raffle in support of BT and Pug Rescue of MB winners!

Congratulations to our winners!

1st Prize ($1000): R. Singh
2nd Prize ($500): J. Fast
3rd Prize ($250): J. Veinot

We raised $2196 for the rescue after all the winners receive their prize money.

This money will be used to help the dogs currently in our care and those that are coming into care soon.

Kash - coming into rescue soon.
Frank & Abby - bonded pair that arrived into the rescue's care last Tuesday. These two are currently in foster care and will not be available for adoption at this time. We are taking this time to address their medical needs as they haven't been to a vet in a few years.
Frank (on medical hold) - arrived into our care few weeks ago with a leg injury. Was being given away for free. He is on medical hold while we figure out the long term plan for his leg.
Tuka (will soon be posted up for adoption) - currently recovering from a knee sprain. Will need a very specific special family to continue with her training and must have a secure yard and understands that she is a flight risk dog.

Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets to support our rescue! We couldn't do this with you all of you! We are so happy to have such continued support from all of you!
