Happy Summer!
It is important to remember that dogs cannot control their body temperature by sweating as humans do since they only have a relatively small number of sweat glands located in their footpads. Their primary way of regulating body temperature is by panting.
Other common causes of heat stroke include being left in a yard without access to shade or water on a hot day, being exposed to a hair dryer for an extended period of time, and excessive or vigorous exercise during hot temperatures. Excited or excessively exercised dogs are sometimes at risk even if the environmental temperature and humidity does not seem high. This is particularly true if dogs are kept in a poorly ventilated environment or a dog house.
Dogs with a restricted airway such as brachycephalic breeds (flat-faced dogs such as pugs, boxers, and bulldogs) are at greater risk. In these breeds, clinical signs of heat stroke can occur when the outside temperature and humidity are only moderately elevated.
If you fear your dog has gotten too much sun or been in the heat for too long and is displaying signs of heat stroke contact us 204-488-4577 or an emergency clinic immediately
Hot summer days are upon us! Make sure your and your pet are being kept cool and hydrated during your summer activities!

Older pets often experience changes in digestion and metabolism. Adjusting the intake of fiber can help regulate bowel movements, prevent constipation, and promote digestive health. Fiber-rich ingredients like beet pulp or psyllium husk may be included in senior pet diets to support gastrointestinal function. For expert advise and direction on the best diet plan for you senior pet, book an appointment with our team!
Dental care is a lifelong journey for puppies and kittens all the way into their senior years. Keeping up with our pet's dental health through daily brushing and regular dental cleanings, as recommended by the veterinarian, helps to prevent periodontal disease and further health complications.
Because regular dental care is such an essential part of our pet's overall health, Corydon Animal Hospital will be offering a discount on dental cleanings, including dental radiographs and pre-anesthetic blood screening from December 1st till February 29th.
Pets are required to have a recent dental consultation with the veterinarian prior to their dental procedure in order to assess the teeth and provide an accurate estimate. This consultation fee will be applied toward the total of your pet's dental procedure, should you choose to schedule one.
Together, we can make sure your pet is on the right journey towards a healthier smile! Call us today at (204) 488-4577 or send an email to [email protected] to book an appointment.

As pets age, their nutritional requirements change. Senior pets often require diets that support joint health, promote cognitive function, and manage age-related conditions. Specialized senior pet foods are formulated with adjusted nutrient levels to meet the specific needs of older pets and support their overall health and well-being.
Here's Stevie Licks during his first puppy check-up! Too cute! 🐾💕

Ear mites are highly contagious and animals become infested by direct contact with another infested animal. If you have a multi-pet household and one of your pet's gets ear mites then there's a very high chance that all your pets are infected with ear mites and require treatment. Clinical signs of infestation vary in severity from one pet to another, and may include combinations of: ear irritation, scratching their ears, head shaking, dark waxy or crusty ear discharge, areas of hair loss resulting from self -trauma, crusted rash around or in the ear or an aural hematoma. The mite is barely visible to the naked eye and may be seen as a white speck moving against a dark background. Typically ear mites are diagnosed by either examination of the pet's ears with an otoscope or by a microscopic examination of discharge from the ear. The video that you see here is a microscopic examination. Once diagnosed, your veterinarian will advise you about which insecticidal products are suitable for your pet.
Performing daily tooth brushing interrupts plaque from forming and is the best method in the prevention of periodontal disease. You can make tooth brushing less stressful by keeping the mouth closed and pulling the lips back to access the teeth instead of opening the mouth. For best results, tooth brushing should be introduced to your pet slowly and make the experience positive by praising your dog throughout the whole procedure, with reassurance during every step.
Sookie wants to remind everyone to give your pet's October dose of heartworm/tick medication! #didyouknow ticks can survive the winter hiding under snow and leaf litter? At 4°C ticks are active even during the mild days during winter months. Ticks will continue to be active until the temperature consistently remains below 4°C.
Since it’s dental health awareness, Pinot wanted to show you how to brush your pet’s teeth! Here are #pinotspointers to help you keep your pet’s teeth healthy! Plaque forms everyday and attaches to the tooth surface and will not leave without the mechanical action of brushing your pet's teeth. Tartar forms from the accumulation of plaque when the calcium and phosphorus in your pet's saliva comes and attaches to the plaque. Unfortunately, tartar has a rough surface that allows more plaque to adhere to it and over time a community of bacteria forms called a biofilm. Once this biofilm adheres to the tooth it can no longer be removed by brushing. Plaque gets trapped underneath the biofilm and starts to extend underneath the gum line and towards the root. This is where disease occurs. Performing tooth brushing daily interrupts that plaque barrier from forming and is the best method in the prevention of periodontal disease. The chemical action of an enzymatic toothpaste approved for pets (do not use human toothpaste, it is not meant to be swallowed!) helps prevent tartar from forming. The toothbrush bristles should be placed at a 45-degree angle at the gum margin where the teeth and gums meet. You should brush in an oval pattern, gently forcing the bristle ends into the area around the base of the tooth as well as into the space between the teeth. Ten short back-and-forth motions, covering three to four teeth at a time, should be completed before moving the brush to a new location. The area requiring the most attention is the outside of the upper teeth. You can make tooth brushing less stressful by keeping the mouth closed and pulling the lips back to access the teeth instead of opening the mouth, which may cause you to accidentally get bit. For best results, tooth brushing should be introduced to your pet slowly and make the experience positive by praising your dog throughout the whole procedure, with reassurance during every step.
