AURAL HEMATOMA 👂🏻

🗣️What is it?
An aural hematoma is a collection of blood within the cartilage of the ear and the skin. This is most commonly the result of a self-inflicted injury from your pet’s scratching and head shaking secondary to ear infections, allergies, parasitic infections or trauma.
FIRST we clip and clean the area to tidy it up so Dr. Danko can measure for the cannula placement (this will stay in place for approximately two weeks to facilitate draining and hopefully minimize scar tissue). Then a small puncture is made so we can drain the pocket and place the cannula.

☆Information UPDATED 07/24/2024, they have since loosened the requirements further:
A reminder to all our traveling patients that the requirements for our dogs to be able to cross over the USA border are changing as of Aug. 1st/2024. Please call our office ahead of time to ensure all your pets requirements are met. There will be paperwork required to be filled out by you, the owner, that can be found on the link below.
A couple of things to keep in mind if you are planning any trips south at any point:
• A microchip is now REQUIRED.
• The Rabies Vaccine is a CANADIAN requirement, so you do not need it to head south but will need it if you plan to return to Canada.
• Dogs must be at least 6 months old to travel across the USA border.

DID YOU KNOW if your kitty companion spends any time outdoors they need to be on prevention just like our dogs do?
They need prevention against Heartworm, feas, ticks and intestinal worms, luckily we carry just what you need to keep them safe & protected! There is also an argument to be made for even indoor cats to be on prevention as unfortunately we know even mosquitos and other insects can make their way into our homes.

~Appointments that are cancelled with less than 24 hours notice or no show appointments will be required to pay a cancellation fee of $30 (for surgeries or ultrasounds the cancellation fee is $50)
~For any new clients, we are requiring a $30 deposit for your appointment. This amount comes directly off your bill at the time of the appointment unless it is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice or you do not show up.

These guys are in care with our friends from Funds for Pets Rescue they have many adoptables but if your not ready for that kind of commitment they are in desperate need of fosters so they can continue helping other animals in need❤️

With Heartworm season in full swing let’s answer one of the most common questions we get!
So…. Why do we test?
#1) Compliance. We know everyone gets busy, and sometimes might give their prevention late or even miss a month all together. It only takes ONE mosquito or tick to transmit disease and anytime they do not have adequate prevention on board our pets are totally susceptible.
#2) The main ingredient in Heartgard is ivermectin, this drug treats the immature Heartworms called microfilaria. There is a separate drug that treats the adult worms. If we administer prevention without a negative test result to a pet that has Heartworm, we are “masking” the symptoms of the active infection when we should be treating it appropriately before things worsen.
#3) Not only do the tests detect Heartworm, but they also detect 3 tick transmitted diseases (Lyme, Ehrlichia and Anaplasma). Again we want to know as soon as possible when we have a pet testing positive so we can begin treatment if needed.
#4) Unfortunately no prevention can be 100% effective, and the efficacy decreases when a dose is given late or missed completely.

While we are exceptionally glad that people are happy and relieved when we rescue dogs & cats (and other critters), it's extremely difficult when we plan a fundraiser and have very little response.
Our social is coming up tomorrow, April 13th at the St. James Legion from 8pm-1am. It's something we hold annually, and is always a great time. There will be music, dancing, food, door prizes, games, and a big silent auction.
We NEED to sell another 50 tickets in order to make this a success, and keep us off an intake freeze. We cannot continue to rescue dogs (like the 20 we brought into care recently) without support for these events.
Our teammates and volunteers have put countless hours making it happen. Please come out and support.

⭐️ ALLIE ⭐️
Today we make a special post decidated to this little lady as we celebrate reaching her goal weight!🎉
She started her weight loss journey after coming in for her physical with Dr. Danko where we discussed that she was over ideal body condition score, sitting at 6.27 kg. Through a special diet and diet plan made just for her, Allie and her parents worked very hard to get her down to her goal weight! She now sits at 4.7kg!
As a friendly reminder, being overweight puts our furry friends more at risk for multiple diseases and is very uncomfortable. Studies show pets that are a healthy weight live longer lives. A lean pet is a happy pet!
Congratulations to Allie and her family on all their hard work🥳

February is Dental Health Month! Ebony is working on her 'smile'... and we are trying to keep her pearly whites as white as they can be! Unfortunately Ebony does not have the best oral genetics so we try to help her out with supplements to reduce gingivitis and tartar build up. Transformation Tuesday
Did you know on occasion we do Feline Shaving too? This isn't something we do on a regular basis but for some kitties who won't tolerate visiting a regular day time groomer we will do a sedation for them to make their groom stress free. Not every cat needs a groomer but some kitties just aren't as tidy as others. Baby Groot is one of those cats, in his house he's know as 'The Stinky Kid'. Since he was a kitten he was lacking in the hygiene department and he is usually in for a tidy up with us twice a year.
