This is why Heartworm Prevention is key!
Take a look at what we found this morning while looking under the microscope.🩸
Microfilaria - part of the life cycle of heartworm disease. The microfilaria live in the hosts’ (dog) bloodstream, acting as a source of transmission when bit by a mosquito. 🦟
When the mosquito feeds on that host, it ingests the microfilaria which eventually develop to their infective stage within the mosquito.
The next time it feeds on another dog, it transmits the infective stage of heartworm. The larvae migrate through tissues where they eventually settle into the heart and pulmonary arteries.
When the disease is left untreated, it can be fatal. Luckily for your pets, we have a wide variety of prevention available.
Heartworm prevention begins June 1st, so mark your calendars!
