Amazing, “photo finish” 💜

49 years ago today: The official finish line photo of the June 9, 1973 Belmont Stakes shows Secretariat in full powerful stride, all four feet off the ground as his nose hits the wire. Jockey Ron Turcotte at that very instant is looking to his left towards the infield timer clock knowing he is a part of a special ride -- one that would shatter the track record and world record in a mind-boggling time of 2:24 for the mile-and-a-half distance.

Today we honor Helen "Penny" Chenery on her 100th birthday. As a girl, she inherited her father’s passion for horses. “I had the horse bug," she recalled. "I wasn’t 'National Velvet.' Horses were just my friends.” 🎂

When Secretariat died in 1989, Thomas Swerczek, DVM, Ph.D., performed the necropsy and discovered the champion's extraordinarily sized heart. Dr. Swerczek died earlier this month, but in January 2020, he shared his story of the discovery with Kentucky Equestrian Directory: http://ow.ly/q2lg50Hx7fv.
