A friendly reminder that the clinic will be CLOSED on Monday, February 17th for the Family Day long weekend!

Give us a call today to make sure your pet's food and prescription needs are covered! (Due to extreme temperatures across the province, we have been experiencing delays. Please do not leave your order until the last minute!🙏🏻😽)

Take care out there! Remember, if you're cold - they're cold! 🌨❄️☃️

Several areas of the province are under an Extreme Cold Warning this morning. We want to remind everyone that extreme temperatures pose certain risks to our furry friends. Please keep your pets safe and warm this winter!

🐾The Basics🐾

Food: Pets outdoors in cold weather may need 20 to 30% more calories to maintain body temperature.

Water: Ice and snow aren’t adequate as water sources. Provide fresh water using heated bowls to prevent freezing.

Shelter: The Animal Protection Act mandates adequate shelter. While indoor housing is best for cats and vulnerable pets, outdoor dogs need insulated shelters.

⚠️Winter Hazards⚠️

Antifreeze: Toxic to pets, especially cats, with even a teaspoon being fatal. Signs include drunkenness, vomiting, rapid heart rate, and seizures. Seek immediate veterinary attention.

De-Icing Products: Can irritate paws and be toxic if ingested. Always wipe your pet's paws after walks to remove these substances.

Frostbite: Look for symptoms like gray or blue skin and pain in affected areas, particularly on ears, tails, and feet. Consult a veterinarian if symptoms appear.

Hypothermia: Symptoms include shivering, lethargy, and difficulty breathing. Treatment may involve warming blankets and IV fluids as necessary.

Meet Cooter! He is an excellent dental month candidate. His owner has brought him almost every year for his dental cleaning, and because she has kept up with his dental care, Cooter only had ONE tooth extracted at his recent dental - not bad for 12 years young!

As you can see from the before and after pictures, the tartar on Cooter's teeth was not nearly as severe as most 12 year old pets that present to us for their first dental procedure. This saved him a long anesthesia, which in senior pets can be very hard on their organ function. Plus, his recovery will be much easier on him and his family! Great job Cooter!

Start the year off on the right paw! January is National Walk Your Dog month! 🐾

Whether you've made a New Years resolution or not - walking your dog is a great way for both you and your pet to get exercise, as well as strengthen the bond between you. We all know Saskatchewan can get a bit cold in January, so we've got some hot tips to help keep you and your pooch enjoying the great outdoors!

🧣Wear The Right Clothing🧤
Make sure both you and your dog are warm enough. Dress in layers. Small or short-haired breeds may need additional layers such as jackets or sweaters. Our large breed friends can even borrow a human jacket during extreme weather conditions or certain winter activities! 🎣

🥾Protect Their Paws🐾
Avoid walking on areas where salt/de-icer have been used. Always opt for pet-friendly products if available. If needed, make sure your doggo has booties to cover sensitive paws. If your dog won't tolerate boots, keep the walks shorter and look for signs they may be struggling with the cold. You can also look for alternative products like Paw Protectant, a wax/oil based barrier ointment. After a romp in the snow, some dogs may need help cleaning out the ice from between their toes!

🌅See and Be Seen🦺
With the short days, make sure you're visible! Dressing in bright colours, or better yet, a hi-vis vest will help keep you safe while walking at dawn, dusk or in the dark. There are plenty of options for pet gear that offers hi-vis or reflective strips on collars, leashes, harnesses, vests, etc. Prevention is the best medicine!

💦Stay Hydrated!🚰
When the temperatures drop we tend to forget to stay hydrated! A friendly reminder for you and your pet to drink water on the regular!

🌞⛄Learn to Love Winter❄⛷
Last but not least, embrace it! Winters here are long. If you can't love it, at least appreciate those sunny days or take a moment to marvel at the hoarfrost on your extremely brisk and miserable walk with the family dog. Fake it 'til you make it (or at least until it's Spring!).

Happy Walk Your Dog month folks! And on those harder days remember one of our great Canadian slogans - it's not so bad once you're out!😽🐾

Happy New Year!

Check out this amazing initiative by the Saskatchewan SPCA to create an Emergency Animal Care Centre (EACC). The EACC will not be a traditional animal shelter or adoption facility. The Centre is designed to fill in gaps in the animal care system to help meet the needs of both animals and people in crisis.

Great job SaskSPCA!

The SaskSPCA There to Care Capital Campaign is raising funds to finish constructing the SaskSPCA Emergency Animal Care Centre (EACC) near Asquith.

The $2.1 million Centre will be able to care for an estimated 1,300 companion animals each year.

The EACC will not be a traditional animal shelter or adoption facility. The Centre will fill gaps in the animal care system to help meet the needs of both animals and people in crisis.

You can learn more about the EACC and donate to the There To Care Campaign at www.caringforpets.ca.

Time for a not so subtle brag! ☺️ Last month, Dr Brianna went to a Veterinary Dental Forum in Palm Springs to get a little bit more hands on dentistry practice, specifically with extractions. Today, she totally ROCKED removing a broken carnassial tooth from a large breed dog! These are difficult extractions, because while the crown is broken and damaged, the massive roots (and there are 3 of them on this particular tooth!) are healthy and very much set on staying in their cozy home. In case you didn’t know, when we remove teeth on animals, we have to do surgical extractions which means we have to remove bone and section teeth into their individual roots in order to safely remove them. It’s a big procedure, but this big boy will be feeling much happier without that sore tooth. Way to go Dr B!
