"F" IS FOR FALL-CHECKLIST! 🍂🍁

As the cooler weather moves in, now is the time to crack down on housing, nutrition, and preventative health strategies suitable for the arrival of winter.

Check out this list of essential items on the horse owner's fall to-do list, but there is much more that needs to be done—like having your horse's blankets repaired and waterproofed, securing and storing hay properly, assessing your shelters for safety and soundness, etc.

Note that your equine veterinarian is one of your greatest allies this season, so be sure to consult them and discuss vaccination and deworming protocols appropriate for your horse’s situation. This is also a great opportunity to chat about recommended changes in nutrition and exercise programs as well!

Summer and fall are the peak time for arbovirus infection as these diseases (which include Eastern Equine Encephalitis [EEE], West Nile Virus [WNV], Western Equine Encephalitis [WEE] and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis [VEE]) are transmitted by several different species of mosquitoes and biting insects.

With more states reporting cases of West Nile Virus (28 cases have been reported in August as of today), this is your reminder to keep your horses up to date on vaccinations with the guidance of your veterinarian to best protect your equine friends from infection.

Learn more about West Nile Virus and find downloadable resources on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website at: https://www.equinediseasecc.org/west-nile-virus

Respiratory health is essential to horse performance, yet it's often under-appreciated or misunderstood. The equine respiratory system is much different than the human’s and it has some limitations, to the point where even a little bit of inflammation or obstruction anywhere in the respiratory tract has a big impact on your horse's performance.

Conditions on the equine asthma spectrum have different manifestations and degrees of severity, so much so you may not even recognize that your equine friend's poor performance issues are related to respiratory health. For example, "feeling heavy,” lack of energy, and slow recovery times are all symptoms that could indicate a condition in the milder end of the equine asthma spectrum.

Reducing dust in the horse’s environment (including bacteria, endotoxins, mites, mold, and fungal spores) is the priority when it comes to both prevention and treatment. Some sources of respirable dust are very predictable (e.g., hay), but things like chickens or chemical spray on nearby fields are also among the many possibilities that could trigger an allergic respiratory response in a horse.

Identifying asthma triggers requires veterinarians and owners to work together, so be sure to consult your veterinarian to learn more about improving your horse’s environment and respiratory health!

Car manufacturers know placing the power at the rear of the vehicle allows for better balance. Nearly all race cars are rear-wheel drive so that when accelerating from a stop, the vehicle’s weight transfers to the back of the car and provides increased traction.

*** LAMINITIS ***

Laminitis is a condition that is an inflammation of the laminae. Laminae holds the pedal bone in position within the hoof. What causes laminitis?
🔹️ Increased sugar intake from fresh spring grass
🔹️ Overweight ponies and horses are unfortunately more susceptible, and this is often common in our native breeds, which are very fond of food!
🔹️ It is more likely to affect ponies or horses with EMS (Equine Metabolic Syndrome)
🔹️ An increased risk of laminitis is common in ponies or horses with Cushing’s Disease

What are the signs of laminitis?
🔹️ Reluctance to walk or move forward
🔹️ Difficulty making tight turns
🔹️ Weight shifting from one foot to another
🔹️ Bounding digital pulses, these can be felt by the back of your horses fetlock
🔹️ Very hot feet
🔹️ Lameness, especially on hard ground

How can you help minimise the risk of laminitis?
🔹️ Managing your horse’s weight effectively. Overweight horses are much more susceptible to suffering with laminitis. Your vet can help with a weight loss plan if needed.
🔹️ Good regular hoof care with a registered farrier.
🔹️ If you suspect your pony or horse may have EMS or Cushing’s seek testing from your veterinary surgeon to confirm this. Having a diagnosis will help you manage the risk.

With laminitis, prevention is always better than cure. If you suspect that your horse or pony may be showing early signs of laminitis, please contact your vet immediately to arrange a visit.
