American chameleons (Anolis carolinensis) are great to keep in a terrarium. The males are extremely active and have a beautiful dewlap. They are also serious horn dogs!

In Death Valley, California, the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is one of the few animals to survive. I found this adult wandering out on the hardpan, miles away from any rock, tree or plant. I have no idea how they survive there!

Arboreal salamanders (Aneides lugubris) are great lungless salamanders from California. They have a prehensile tail and can squeak loudly when you pick them up. But be careful because they can give a pretty nasty bite! This is a distinct subspecies Aneides lugubris farallonensis I found while doing research on the Farallon Islands (Islands of the Dead) off the California coast.

Using an external heater is a great way to keep your terrarium pond. Free of things that I sneak can tangle up with. Just be sure to keep it vertical, or it can burn out. This is a Hydor filter that I destroyed.

A lot of people like to use Drylok for DIY terrariums. It’s great, simple to use and non-toxic. But it does tend to cover up details as it gets thick. Epoxy is also a useful alternative. It’s just a bit more expensive!

Super excited the 2nd in my series on building a SPRAY FOAM TREE comes out today! It’s all on casting real tree bark using spray foam & silicone rubber. I learned a lot doing this one that I think others can use. I hope you enjoy it! Randy
