FOR ADOPTION! Meet our foster, Cora, from .angels.costarica She’s been with us awhile because she’s just an easy pup that goes with the flow, and we’ve loved having her with us. But it’s time she starts her new forever life with a loving, easy going family like herself. She’s still a medium size pup, most likely just under a year. Walks great on a lead, has mastered recall with distractions and loves a mental challenge as much as a physical one. Most of all, she loves hanging with her humans. She’s a fun loving rough player, so any family dogs will need to be up-to-speed on the play style of a Dutch shepherd sir mix-a-lot. Cora also has a phenomenal Watch command compliments of Tropic K9 and Mother Nature. All applications will go through .angels.costarica along with the adoption fee. Please DM us for more information.

Happy 2nd birthday, Kyron! With a steady fierce composure that belies your crackhead ways, you’ve gotten me out of a couple questionable situations; you’re up for anything we throw at you in bitework and then some; you will answer any door with a bite (note to anyone opening a door that she is behind:); you run the jungle like a ju**ie queen and I will never tire of exploring with you; you are heart and soul my girl.

Slippin’ lids with our 5 month-old Deja… The conscious ownership of both mind and body brings a confident clarity that needs no external reward as letting the dog own its accomplishments with pride and confidence is a ‘reward’ that will last a lifetime.

Osso was rescued by as a tiny pup along with his siblings and has spent his entire life in the shelter until now… Osso is killing it in our two week foundation obedience board and train. He’s an outgoing quick learner with a steady stable head on his shoulders. Osso gets along great with all other sizes, ages and temperaments of both dogs and humans. He was the beauty and the beast. The jester and the king. Can’t believe it’s been a year since this as***le was around to make me laugh… Venom lived life respecting his instincts which made me sharpen my own. He loved with great expression which made me widen the depth of my heart. He valued fairness and truth which made me continue to evaluate my communication and commitment to him and to others. Forever my heart, Venom. Keep junglin’ on.

Blk Venom and Massive cuttin’ their own path… the weight, width and length of a lead matters in effective communication whether using it as a ‘steering wheel’, brake or a corrective. If a lead is too thin, it will deliver weak lead communication. If a lead is too thick, it will be hard to hold in one hand thus making it hard to give an effective correction. Our leads are 6ft, 3/4” wide, .12” thick biothane, double snap with a floating ‘O’ ring. Biothane holds up against our humidity, intense sun exposure, salt and sulphur waters and our heavy rains. Thanks to the consistent craftsmanship .leather.works we have an extremely reliable lead that is the backbone to all of our training along with being a popular favorite of our clients. Thanks .leather.works for appreciating the details as much as we do!

A couple of weeks ago we had the pleasure of training 20 Walk the Pack Volunteers and a few of the 45 dogs available for adoption at one of our favorite rescues . We started with the importance of a functional and secure lead and collar as a weight/size appropriate collar can add comfort and connection to a dog. The weight of a lead matters when using it for guidance and correction along with the dog feeling confidently connected to their human. We also focused on the triple benefit of having the dog walk beside them rather than in front of them. Besides the dog learning a useful skill that will hopefully make him more adoptable, the dog learns to be in rhythm with a human which will flow into his confidence and continued human connections. And in true ‘Tropicing’ style, the volunteers can find things to have the dogs jump onto, climb over, go under or cross, working both the mind and the body, adding boundaries, focus, confidence, pride and connection. It was awesome to see the dedication and care these volunteers had for their shelter dogs. has nurtured a phenomenal crew both two and four-legged. Looking forward to the next time!

While in Indiana, Vendetta got the chance to man hunt the elusive and highly adaptable, though most ineptly camouflaged, Bearded River Troll. As not yet on the endangered man list, Vendetta chowed down on this backwoods delicacy much to the delight of her handler… all joking aside, our host and decoy Kilo 9iner Dog Club] went above and beyond in making the working weekend a success for all involved. Kilo 9iner Dog Club] is the example of running a company based on morals, integrity and knowing his s**t, but not needing applause for it. No ego, just mutual respect for the work we do. Lookin’ forward to the next time!

Our easy rider friend Pablo continues rehabbin’ slow and low on the tire swing. The lowest impact, highest yielding ‘piece of equipment’ we work on every day with every dog we train. Swinging connects the right and left brain, connecting the synapses; works core muscles and hind leg strength; builds balance, spatial awareness, stamina, stability, focus and calmness. For Pablo, swinging continues to strengthen his core and the muscles around his healing hips and pelvis… in this video, in his love and excitement for his dog Pablo’s handler gives Pablo a little love which completely throws Pablo off his flow.

Had the pure pleasure of connecting with .without.borders while in town on their way to Guatemala for work with their company .conservationists … Niffler and company have ridden shotgun while their two-legged drove the highway from the northern US. Yeah, stop bitchin’ about the odd pothole on your freeway commute and imagine driving a sprinter van through 5 different countries with differing, if not questionable infrastructure. Badass as they come not only for that, but for quietly knowing their work and having the integrity and depth of knowledge to back it up. Two rarities in this industry. Smooth travels!

Ass floppin’ and rhythm brought to you by Monday vs. Friday otherwise known as Kyron and Shook… obstacles are opportunities of growth and growth isn’t always perfect, but it’s the follow through that matters .

Super stoked to have our friend Pablo training with us again after a freak accident three months ago left him with a shattered pelvis and two broken hips… his rehab training is concentrating on building up his muscle tone and range of movement in his hind legs… Pablo’s rehab training is also rehab training for his owner .h1ll who is working through the trauma of seeing and hearing his best friend get hit by a car, visiting him in traction for weeks, paying whatever it took to get him walking again and putting his life on hold to nurse Pablo back to full strength once he came home. This obstacle was about letting go of human fears we hold that our dogs do not. Harder obstacle for Ethan than it was for Pablo. Super proud of both!

Hang time with our young board and train Ben… obedience is more than just our dogs knowing basic commands. It’s being able to communicate with them under any circumstance. In this case, directing Ben to take the stairs down that he so beautifully missed upon entry.

Sounds and smells undetectable to the humans in the room are exactly what campus security K9 Nomad is trained to pick up on. And training her dedicated handler to read her body language is as important as K9 Nomad disarming the threat. Reading how she clears the space; lays down calmly but is still listening and smelling; reading her ears as they stand alert along with the slight movement of her nostrils. Valuable seconds for a trained response from both the two and four-legged.

She is not mercy, she is truth… It’s been three years since Missile’s amputation, and at 9 years old she’s still a force to be reckoned with. She takes no pity, nor does she give it. She takes pride in her work though has accepted the boundaries of the three-legged. And she takes the hearts of all that meet her not for her missing leg, but for showing us she’s not missing anything.
Check out her IG post for more videos and photos.

06/08/2022

Blk. Venom risin’ to the top with catlike precision… for those wondering why in the hell we’d not have our precious lil’ darling Venom using a harness for this drill, let’s talk leverage points. For this particular drill, a harness lacks the correct leverage point to actually be of assistance if he needs it, which as you can see, he does not need any assistance and the lead is merely there as a confident connection to his handler.
Having his handler able to work the lead on his collar allows the handler to either hold tension on the lead while Blk. Venom leverages his entire upper body strength against that tension to pull up his hind legs or allows the handler to lower him down if Blk. Venom should need to abandon the task at any point. If the lead was attached to a mid back harness point that leverage point is in a far less effective position for Blk. Venom to leverage his entire upper body against as he makes his way up.
Safety is a must, but safety is not a cover for human fears our dogs do not hold.
