Summer is around the corner and it is a time for outdoor play, travel, and adventure. But before you rush off for some summer fun, it’s essential to consider the hot-weather risks that could affect your pets.

Never leave pets in a hot car.
In summer, outdoor temperatures can climb into the 35 Celsius and beyond. But inside a car, even with the windows cracked open, temperatures can rise to over 50 Celsius in just minutes, making heat exhaustion a genuine risk. Dogs and cats cannot perspire the way we do to cool themselves down, so when they become overheated, they have little recourse. Also, small animals are more quickly overwhelmed by heat exhaustion than humans, so even 10 minutes in a hot environment can be dangerous—even deadly—for a small dog or cat. If your pet shows signs of heatstroke (lethargy, shallow panting, sunken eyes, tacky gums, or unconsciousness), take your animal to a vet immediately.

Always provide shade and water.
If your pets are going to be accompanying you on vacation, or just chilling in the backyard, be sure that no matter where you take them, they have access to cold water and shade. Remember, pets don’t sweat, so they’ll need a place to cool down and plenty of fresh drinking water in order to stay hydrated and keep their body temps within the healthy range. As an added precaution, you can gently wipe your pet’s body down with a damp cloth. This will simulate the cooling effect of perspiration and help your pet cool down more quickly.

Pack a travel bag for your pet.
If you’re planning a long road trip with your pets, be sure they have a travel bag packed with necessities like food, fresh water, a travel bowl, treats, toys, and some basic first-aid items (bandages, antibiotic cream, burn cream, snakebite antivenom, etc.).

Never leave pets unsupervised around pools.
A swimming pool can provide a welcome cool-down on a hot summer day, but for pets, a pool can be a drowning hazard. Always keep a watchful eye on your pets if they are outdoors when your pool is uncovered. Above-ground pools that are accessed only by ladder are especially dangerous for pets. A crafty dog or curious cat may be able to get into the pool and then find it impossible to escape.

Defend your pet from parasites.
Summer is the time when fleas and ticks are most active. If your pet spends significant time outdoors, be sure they are wearing some type of flea and tick preventive. Check your animal regularly for ticks. Remember that the tiny deer tick (smaller than the dog tick) can transmit Lyme disease, so give your animal a regular flea combing and check areas behind the ears and around paws and legs to remove any attached ticks.

Εάν το κατοικίδιο ζώο σας παρουσιάζει σημάδια θερμοπληξίας (λήθαργο, ρηχό λαχάνιασμα, βυθισμένα μάτια, κολλώδη ούλα ή απώλεια συνείδησης), πηγαίνετε το ζώο σας σε κτηνίατρο αμέσως.

Ιδανικός χώρος με σκιά και νερό.
Εάν τα κατοικίδιά σας πρόκειται να σας συνοδεύουν στις διακοπές ή απλώς χαλαρώνουν στην αυλή, βεβαιωθείτε ότι όπου κι αν τα πάτε, έχουν πρόσβαση σε κρύο νερό και σκιά. Θυμηθείτε, τα κατοικίδια δεν ιδρώνουν, επομένως θα χρειαστούν ένα μέρος για να δροσιστούν και άφθονο φρέσκο πόσιμο νερό για να παραμείνουν ενυδατωμένα και να διατηρήσουν τη θερμοκρασία του σώματός τους εντός των φυσιολογικών ορίων. Ως επιπλέον προφύλαξη, μπορείτε να σκουπίσετε απαλά το σώμα του κατοικίδιου ζώου σας με ένα υγρό πανί. Αυτό θα προσομοιώσει το δροσιστικό αποτέλεσμα της εφίδρωσης και θα βοηθήσει το κατοικίδιό σας να δροσιστεί πιο γρήγορα.

Ετοιμάστε μια τσάντα ταξιδιού για το κατοικίδιό σας.
Εάν σχεδιάζετε ένα μεγάλο οδικό ταξίδι με τα κατοικίδια ζώα σας, βεβαιωθείτε ότι έχουν μια τσάντα ταξιδιού γεμάτη με είδη πρώτης ανάγκης όπως φαγητό, φρέσκο νερό, ένα μπολ ταξιδιού, λιχουδιές, παιχνίδια και μερικά βασικά είδη πρώτων βοηθειών (επιδέσμους, αντιβιοτική κρέμα, κρέμα για ερεθισμένο δέρμα, αντιδηλωτικό από δάγκωμα φιδιού κ.λπ.).

Μην αφήνετε ποτέ τα κατοικίδια ζώα χωρίς επίβλεψη γύρω από τις πισίνες.
Μια πισίνα μπορεί να προσφέρει δροσιά σε μια ζεστή καλοκαιρινή μέρα, αλλά για τα κατοικίδια, το βαθύ νερό μπορεί να τα οδηγήσει σε πνιγμό. Προσέχετε πάντα τα κατοικίδιά σας εάν βρίσκονται σε εξωτερικό χώρο όταν η πισίνα σας είναι ακάλυπτη. Οι υπέργειες πισίνες που είναι προσβάσιμες μόνο με σκάλα είναι ιδιαίτερα επικίνδυνες για τα κατοικίδια. Ένας περίεργος σκύλος ή μια γάτα μπορεί να καταφέρουν να μπουν στην πισίνα και μετά να τους είναι αδύνατο να ξεφύγουν.

Προστατέψτε το κατοικίδιό σας από τα παράσιτα.
Το καλοκαίρι είναι η εποχή που οι ψύλλοι και τα τσιμπούρια είναι πιο ενεργά. Εάν το κατοικίδιό σας περνάει αρκετό χρόνο σε εξωτερικούς χώρους, βεβαιωθείτε ότι φοράει κάποιου είδους προστασία από ψύλλους. Ελέγχετε τακτικά το ζώο σας για τσιμπούρια. Να έχετε υπόψιν σας ότι υπάρχουν κάποιοι ψύλλοι που μπορούν να μεταδώσουν τη νόσο του Lyme, επομένως προσπαθήστε να ελέγχετε τακτικά τις περιοχές πίσω από τα αυτιά και γύρω από τα πόδια για να αφαιρέσετε τυχόν προσκολλημένα τσιμπούρια.

Pet food safety tips in summer

✅ Once a bag is opened, it should be sealed properly (i.e. bag clip) to maintain the freshness of the food.

✅ Store in a clean food container between refills.

✅ Summer time is a bug period so keep the food stored in an airtight container to prevent contamination.

✅ Summer is the time of high temperatures so store the food in a cool and dry place.

What Do Cats Use Their Paws For?

Cat paws are incredible multifunctional tools. Here are just some of the tasks they can be used for:

🐾Walking: If you’ve ever seen a cat walk, you know exactly how regal and graceful they look. It’s no wonder the platform fashion models walk on is called the catwalk; only a person as agile and lithe as a cat can properly strut on such a narrow runway. Cats are digitigrade walkers, walking on their toes with their heels never touching the ground. This gives them a proud look to their gait and allows them to move quickly in silence to hunt and avoid predators. Cats also take part in direct registering, a form of walking in which the back paw always falls in place of the front paw. Using this technique, they are more balanced and leave less tracks.

🐾Absorb shock: Cats may be small in size, but they are incredibly athletic. They can jump up to seven times their height and land skillfully without injury as well. Their paw pads, limb bones, and joints complement each other to buffer the impact and reduce the sound of landing.

🐾Leave their scent: There are scent glands in your cat’s paws called interdigital glands. When their claws are extended, these glands help your cat spread their unique pheromones. By marking their scent, cats will be able to know which areas are safe, communicate to other cats that this is their territory, avoid confrontations, and even signal to the opposite s*x that they are ready to mate.

🐾Sweat: Unlike humans, cats do not have sweat glands all over their body. Most of their sweat glands are located in relatively hairless areas like the lip, the chin, and of course, the paw. Although cats are already really good at regulating their temperature due to their ancestors that lived in desert climates, sweating through their paws is a more immediate way of cooling themselves down. You may even see your cats leave behind damp paw prints on hot summer days.

Όροι και Προϋποθέσεις:

1. Δικαίωμα συμμετοχής στο διαγωνισμό και προωθητικές ενέργειες στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης της εταιρείας Champion Pet Food (στη συνέχεια ΄ο Διοργανωτής΄) έχουν, άτομα που είναι μόνιμα εγκατεστημένα στην Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία και έχουν ηλικία άνω των 18 χρονών, ή, σε περίπτωση που είναι νεότεροι των 18 χρόνων, έχουν τη συγκατάθεση του κηδεμόνα τους.

2. Τα άτομα που εμπίπτουν στις ακόλουθες κατηγορίες αποκλείονται από το διαγωνισμό: όσοι εργάζονται για τον Διοργανωτή και οι συγγενείς α’ βαθμού των ατόμων που εργάζονται για τον Διοργανωτή,

3. Τα άτομα που επιθυμούν να λάβουν μέρος στο Διαγωνισμό θα πρέπει να ακολουθήσουν τις οδηγίες που αναγράφονται στην ανακοίνωση του διαγωνισμού, όπως αυτή εμφανίζεται στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης. Έγκυρες συμμετοχές θεωρούνται εκείνες που ακολούθησαν ρητά τις οδηγίες συμμετοχής του διαγωνισμού.

4. Το δώρο του διαγωνισμου δεν ανταλλάζεται με χρήματα αλλά μπορεί να γίνει επιλογή προΪόντων ίδιας αξίας.

5. Η επιλογή του νικητή θα γίνει από τα περισσότερα likes που θα έχει στη φωτογραφία του και το όνομα του νικητή θα ανακοινωθεί στην ανάρτηση του διαγωνισμού/προωθητικής ενέργειας στις 10/1/2023. Μετά τις 10/1/2023 (στο εξής η «ημερομηνία λήξης») καμία συμμετοχή δεν θα γίνεται αποδεκτή.

6. Το όνομα του νικητή θα ανακοινωθεί στο μέσο κοινωνικής δικτύωσης όπου αναφέρεται ο διαγωνισμός και ο νικητής καλείται να στείλει τα στοιχεία του μέσω προσωπικού μηνύματος ούτως ώστε να γίνει ταυτοποίηση. Σε περίπτωση που κάποιος τυχερός ή τυχερή δεν αποστείλει το τηλέφωνο επικοινωνίας του/της σε διάστημα 1 βδομάδας, τότε ο Διοργανωτής έχει το δικαίωμα να προχωρήσει σε νέα κλήρωση κ.ο.κ.

7. Ο Διοργανωτής διατηρεί το δικαίωμα να μεταβάλει τους όρους και προϋποθέσεις συμμετοχής στο διαγωνισμό, τη διάρκεια του και την ημερομηνία διεξαγωγής της κλήρωσης, καθώς και της ανάκλησής του. Επίσης, διατηρεί το δικαίωμα να ανακαλέσει ή να ακυρώσει τη διενέργεια της κλήρωσης ή να αντικαταστήσει το δώρο.

Terms and Conditions for Champion Pet Food Christmas Giveaway

1. Participation in the competition and other promotional activities οn social media by Champion Pet Food (‘the Organizer’) is open to persons who are residents of Cyprus, aged 18 and above, whereas individuals under the age of 18 can only participate with the consent of a parent or legal guardian.

2. The following groups of people are not allowed to participate in the competition, in other promotional activities, or win: the Organizer’s employees and their families,

3. People who wish to participate in the competition must follow the instructions that can be found on the competition announcement post on social media. Only the entries that follow all steps are considered valid.

4. The prize of the competition is not exchanged for money but products of the same value can be selected.

5. The winner will be selected from the most likes that he/she will have on their picture from all valid entries received before the closing date and the winner will be announced on the announcement post on 10/1/2023. Entries submitted 10/1/2023 (‘closing date’) will not be valid.

6. The name of the winner will be announced on the social medium where the competition has taken place and the winner is asked to provide his/her personal details via private message for identification purposes. In case a winner fails to respond by sending his/her phone number within 1 week of being announced as a winner, then the Organizer has the right to proceed with a new draw.

7. The Organiser reserves the right to amend the terms and conditions of participation, modify or delay the date of the draw, cancel the promotion or replace the prize.
