This is our referral case of the day from Nicosia, which came for ophthalmic examination and investigation of total blindness cause since rescued as a kitten around 3 months old. The cat now is 2,5 years old and was diagnosed with early onset GPRA, a genetic condition that leads to early total vision loss due to abnormal photoreceptor cell development.

What is electroretinography (ERG)? It is a common device that veterinary ophthalmologists use to assess retinal function and diagnose retinal diseases that cause blindness in dogs and cats like GPRA, SARDs etc as well as a preoperative assessment before cataract surgeries. Contact us for more information if your pet is experiencing vision loss. 🐶😺

Before and after photos of Ricci 4 weeks after cataract surgery on his left eye. Ricci had bilateral hypermature cataracts on both eyes and was totally blind before the surgery. Cataracts are classified into 4 stages: incipient, immature, mature and hypermature with the latter causing total blindness and possible secondary complications like lens uveitis and glaucoma. We advise the pet owners who would like their pets to undergo cataract surgery to bring them when the cataract is still in the immature stage to have as less complications as possible during and after the surgery 🐾
