Vet school's social media campaign concludes with a spotlight on snakes' ecological role
🎥🐍 The last video in a series of 15 short videos by the University of Nicosia School of Veterinary Medicine, which began in October 2023, has just been released, focusing on the benefits that snakes bring to the global ecosystem.
🌞 Now that the weather has warmed up, snakes are becoming more active and visible in their natural habitats. They do not pose a danger to humans unless they are frightened and driven to defensive behaviour. Understanding their behaviour and ecological importance is crucial for peaceful coexistence.
Below are some characteristics of snakes that could help in better understanding them:
🔸 Defensive, not aggressive: Snakes are more commonly encountered in the countryside and generally do not seek to attack or harm humans. They will only do so if they feel threatened. Therefore, it is important to be careful where we step and place our hands to avoid surprising them.
🔸 Masters of pest control: Snakes play a crucial role in controlling pests. They hunt rodents, insects, and other small animals. They help to maintain a balanced food web and prevent overpopulation of these species, which can be harmful to crops and human health.
🔸 Contribution to medicine: Snakes have significantly contributed to medical science, as their venom offers potential treatments for life-threatening conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, and certain types of cancer. Ongoing research into the benefits of snake venom offers promising prospects for the development of new drugs.
🔸 Cultural symbols: In many cultures, snakes are revered and often depicted as symbols of fertility, rebirth, wisdom, and power.
🌿🐍 Let us respect snakes and nature, and through coexistence, protect them!

🧠 Intellectual Avians: Parrots are among the most intelligent bird species. They can solve problems, use tools, and some can mimic human speech, showing their social intelligence.
👯 Social Interaction Specialists: Parrots are social animals that form strong bonds and complex social structures. These interactions help them find food and protect each other from predators.
🎨 Cultural Significance: Parrots appear in mythology, art, and folklore around the world, symbolising beauty, intelligence, and a connection to nature.
On World Parrot Day, let's honour and protect these amazing birds, celebrating their intelligence, ecological role, and cultural importance. 🌍💚

Celebrating veterinary excellence on World Veterinary Day
🐾🩺Celebrating veterinary excellence on #WorldVeterinaryDay
This year the World Veterinary Day honours Veterinarians around the world as essential health workers. Their diverse roles significantly impact animal health, human health, food security, and the environment. With comprehensive training and a broad scope of practice, veterinarians address complex health challenges across various settings.
🩺Below are just a few of the many vital roles veterinarians play:
1. 🐶 Diagnosing and treating diseases 🐄
Veterinarians diagnose and treat diseases in pets, livestock, and wildlife, by managing conditions ranging from infections and injuries to chronic diseases. They are also crucial in identifying diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans, such as rabies, Lyme disease, and avian influenza (bird flu). By diagnosing and managing these diseases, they play a key role in preventing their spread to human populations.
2. 🍽️ Contributing to food safety
Veterinarians ensure the health of livestock, impacting the safety, quality, and sustainability of our food supplies. They oversee everything from farm to table, including humane animal treatment and disease prevention.
3. 🌍 Controlling the spread of diseases
During natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes, veterinarians are essential in rescue operations, helping prevent disease spread in chaotic environments.
4. 🌲 Protecting the environment
Veterinarians contribute to wildlife conservation and management, protecting endangered species and maintaining biodiversity. Their work also involves safeguarding water sources from contamination by animal waste.

The Superpowers of Cats
"The Superpowers of Cats" 🐾 explores the sophisticated sensory tools, healing capabilities, and remarkable physical agility of cats that aid in navigation, health, and survival.
🐱 VITAL WHISKERS: Cats' whiskers, or vibrissae, are more than just adorable adornments—they're vital sensory tools. Deeply embedded in their skin and connected to nerves, whiskers help cats navigate their surroundings with precision, gauging distances and detecting obstacles even in the dark 🌚. These sensitive hairs also convey emotions, with their position reflecting a cat's mood.
🎵 ACOUSTIC ARSENAL FOR THREATS AND PREY: Cats have exceptional hearing abilities, with the ability to hear frequencies as high as 65 kHz, far beyond the human range of approximately 20 kHz. This keen sense of hearing aids them in hunting prey and detecting potential threats.
💤 SELF SOOTHING RELIEF: Beyond signalling contentment, purring has potential health benefits for cats. The frequency of a cat's purring has been found to promote bone density and accelerated healing, which may explain why cats often instinctively purr when they are injured or in pain.
🐈 RIGHT SIDE UP: When falling, a cat twists its body in mid-air using its flexible spine. This twisting motion allows the cat to reposition its limbs and align its body to land feet-first, minimizing the impact of the fall. Cats possess a remarkable innate ability known as the "righting reflex," which enables them to orient themselves mid-fall and adjust their body position to land on their feet.
CATS: CHAMPIONS OF CHILL AND CHARM! 🏅
