🐾 From Classroom to Clinic: UNIC Vet Students Gain Real-World Experience

This past summer, UNIC Veterinary Medicine students took their training beyond the classroom with hands-on internships at Vet Ex Machina, a Cyprus-based preclinical research company.

📢 Επίσκεψη της Επιτρόπου Περιβάλλοντος στο Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας

Την Τρίτη, 11 Νοεμβρίου 2025, πραγματοποιήθηκε επίσκεψη της Επιτρόπου Περιβάλλοντος και Ευημερίας των Ζώων, κας Αντωνίας Θεοδοσίου, καθώς και της Ανώτερης Κτηνιατρικής Λειτουργού του Γραφείου της, κας Έλενας Γεωργίου, στο Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας.

🟢 Την αντιπροσωπία υποδέχθηκαν η Κοσμήτορας της Κτηνιατρικής Σχολής, Καθηγήτρια Ζωή Πολυζοπούλου, η Δρ Δάφνη Μαυρίδη, Κλινική Επίκουρη Καθηγήτρια και Επικεφαλής του Τμήματος Κτηνιατρικής, καθώς και ο κ. Γιώργος Συκαλλίδης, Διευθυντής Επικοινωνίας του Τομέα Υγείας του Πανεπιστημίου.

🟣 Κατά τη διάρκεια της συνάντησης συζητήθηκαν οι δυνατότητες συνεργασίας μεταξύ της Κτηνιατρικής Σχολής και του Γραφείου της Επιτρόπου, καθώς και η συμβολή της Σχολής στον δημόσιο διάλογο και στις πολιτικές για την προστασία και ευημερία των ζώων. Στο πλαίσιο της συζήτησης, τέθηκαν επίσης θέματα κοινού ενδιαφέροντος, όπως:
-η καταγραφή του αριθμού των αδέσποτων σκύλων και γάτων,
-εκστρατείες για τη δωρεάν τοποθέτηση μικροτσίπ σε σκύλους,
-ο έλεγχος της αναπαραγωγής των αδέσποτων (και κυνηγόσκυλων)
-η διοργάνωση δράσεων ευαισθητοποίησης και σχετικών σεμιναρίων,
-ο καταρτισμός μαθημάτων για πιστοποιημένη εκπαίδευση στη διαχείριση ζώων συντροφιάς
-η παροχή επείγουσας φροντίδας στα ζώα.

📍Ακολούθησε ξενάγηση στο Ανατομείο της Κτηνιατρικής Σχολής, όπου παρουσιάστηκαν οι σύγχρονες εγκαταστάσεις και οι εκπαιδευτικές δυνατότητες που προσφέρονται στους φοιτητές.

📢 Visit of the Commissioner for the Environment to the University of Nicosia

On Tuesday, 11 November 2025, the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Ms Antonia Theodosiou, together with the Senior Veterinary Officer of her Office, Ms Elena Georgiou, visited the University of Nicosia.

🟢The delegation was welcomed by Professor Zoi Polizopoulou, Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr Daphne Mavrides, Clinical Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine, and Mr George Sykalides, Director of Communications for UNIC Health.

🟣 During the meeting, discussions focused on potential areas of collaboration between the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Office of the Commissioner, as well as the school’s contribution to public discourse and policymaking on animal protection and welfare. Topics addressed during the meeting included:
-recording the numbers of stray dogs and cats
-campaigns to provide free microchips for dogs
-reproductive control for stray animals (and hunting dogs),
-organising awareness days and seminars on these issues,
-development of courses for certified training in companion animal management
-emergency care for animals.

📍Following the meeting, the delegation was given a tour of the School’s Anatomy Laboratory, where the state-of-the-art facilities and hands-on learning opportunities available to students were presented.

Σχολιάζοντας τα αποτελέσματα της έρευνας, ο Δρ. Κυριάκος Σπανούδης, Κλινικός Επίκουρος Καθηγητής στην Κτηνιατρική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας, δήλωσε: «Η μελέτη αυτή αποδεικνύει ότι η τεχνολογία μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί με ασφάλεια για τη θεραπεία διαφόρων τύπων όγκων σε σκύλους και γάτες. Τα ζώα δεν ενοχλήθηκαν από τη θεραπεία, ενώ ο υπέρηχος εστίασε αποτελεσματικά στον όγκο, διατηρώντας υγιείς τις γύρω περιοχές. Η τεχνολογία αυτή προσφέρει σημαντικά οφέλη, καθώς, ως μη επεμβατική, επιτρέπει συντομότερο χρόνο ανάρρωσης συγκριτικά με τις συμβατικές χειρουργικές μεθόδους».

Στη μελέτη συμμετείχαν 15 σκύλοι και γάτες με διάφορους τύπους όγκων σε διάφορα μέρη του σώματός τους
