Cardiological case!!!!❤️❤️❤️
Mitral valve degenaration (MVD) in dogs is a common heart condition that can either be due to age or in some cases due to genes. It occurs when the valve undergoes a degenerative change, thickening and becoming floppier and in result there is regurgitation of the blood in the heart.
The first sign a veterinarian notices is a heart murmur and a heart ultrasound should follow to determine the stage of the disease.
Although a progressive disease, with the right treatment it can be managed.
Following is a case of acute chordae tendineae rupture due to mitral valve degeneration (MVD) . Chordae tendineae are strong, fibrous connections between the valve leaflets and the papillary muscles that maintain the position and tension of the atrioventricular valves, and their rupture is a complication of canine MVD and is responsible for heart failure.Although it is severe, successful management is possible.
Dr Evis Andreou performed the heart ultrasound, the diagnosis and provided the owners with his expert advice to help with the management.
For more expert advice on heart conditions you can book your appointment at PetLife Clinic .

In honour of the international day of stray animals that was yesterday, we have the following case:
A male adult Sharpei, that was
surrendered to one of Nicosia's shelters, was brought to our clinic to be treated for chronic dermatological problems.
It is extremely common for Sharpeis to suffer from skin issues that can be difficult to treat because of the natural folds that their skin forms and in combination with the moisture that can be trapped there, it creates the perfect enviroment for microbial growth. This condition is called skin fold dermatitis and if not treated right and diligently it becomes a recurrent issue. In addition, it was also revealed that he suffered from entropion. Entropion is an abnormality of the eyelids in which the eyelids roll inward causing the hair on the surface of the eyelid to rub against the cornea, resulting in pain, corneal ulcers or perforations and can interfere with vision.
Dr Giannis Kairis approached this case surgically to give a more permanent solution and provide the animal with as much relieve as possible. He removed the excess skin around the "face" to clear out the folds that caused the most problems and also surgically corrected the eyelids to revert their inward direction. The surgery was a success and the dog was adopted.
Following are the pictures before snd right after the surgery.

New case alert!!!
The following pictures are from a surgery performed to a cat that was hit by a car. As soon as the animal was brought in, the doctor proceeded to a physical examination which revealed that the patient had a cleft palate (palatoschisis), caused by the collision with the car, as well as broken symphysis of the mandible (lower jaw) and dislocation of the symphysis of the maxilla (upper jaw) which was confirmed with X-rays.
Dr Giannis Kairis perfromed the surgery and placed sutures to correct the cleft palate. In order to correct the jaw, the Dr Giannis used nail in combination with circlage wire in figure of 8 to fix the maxilla (upper jaw). The same technique with the circlage wire was used to fix the mandible (lower jaw) as well. In addition, an esophageal tube was placed for a week to help with the feeding and to allow the area to heal properly.
Tha cat is doing well and it's and still recovering at our PetLife Clinic.

Guess the foreign body!!!

One of our adorable patients managed to eat its owner's earrings! Luckily the owner saw everything and brought him straight to our clinic. X-rays were performed to determine the location of the earrings and Dr Giannis Kairis performed a gastrotomy to remove the two earrings and one enterotomy in the middle of the jejunum to remove part of the earrings.
Our furry friend has recovered well from surgery and continues its recovery at home!
