Llama (Lama glama) is a domestic specie of camelid originating from the Andes mountains of mainly Peru and Bolivia. Llamas are descended from wild guanacos and are among the oldest domestic animals in the world.

Llamas can reach a height of 1.8m and weigh as much as 200kg.
A male llama is called a “Macho” a female is called a “Hembra” and a baby llama is called a “Cria” A group of llamas is called a herd.

Our herd consists of 1 macho and 2 hembras. They are all 17 years old and can live for around 25 years.

Just like camels, llamas can spit!!
Spitting is used to establish dominance and determine a pecking order as well as for defence. Females will also spit at males that they are not interested in.

Before a llama spits it will give a warning by pinning back its ears, puffing out its nostrils and raising up its chin. If the warning is not taken they will then regurgitate the contents of their stomach and they can spit this foul smelling liquid as far as 3 meters.

Don’t worry though you’re able to see our herd from a distance safe from spitting.

The muntjac is one of the smallest members of the deer family standing at around 50cm tall and weighing approximately 18kgs. Muntjacs can jump up to 1.2m high, reach speeds of 56kmh, they can also swim.

Only males have antlers and when fighting they use their antlers to push opponents off balance before slashing at them with their 2.5cm tusks. (Females also have tusks but they are much smaller)

This is a very ancient specie with researchers believing that they evolved 15-35 million years ago. The muntjac originates from Asia and is also known as the barking or rib-faced deer.

Under human care muntjacs can live for 18-23 years. The zoo is home to a herd of 16 muntjacs, look out for them on your next visit.
