🩺 Meet Dr. Erik Bergman – Specialist in Sports Medicine and Imaging & Managing Director at SMDC 🐴

Every day at the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC), Erik works with sport horses as a specialist in sports medicine and rehabilitation. As one of the founders and managing directors of SMDC, he combines clinical expertise with leadership, making the clinic a true center of excellence for equine sports medicine.

Erik is
🔸a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ECVSMR)
🔸a recognized expert in diagnostic imaging
🔸the first in the Netherlands to introduce scintigraphy for horses
🔸pioneer regarding the use of contrast CT imaging of the equine stifle
🔸known for imaging and sports medicine at the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the European Championships, and CHIO Aachen
🔸a European Specialist in Equine Reproduction (Dipl. ECAR)
🔸Associate Member LA-ECVDI
🔸trainer to many ECVDI and ECVSMR residents
🔸at the forefront of equine locomotor pathology as one of the first veterinarians to achieve ISELP certification

🔸an international speaker, lecturing worldwide and raising medical standards in equine sports medicine

Beyond his work at SMDC, Erik played a central role in the development and expansion of the Altano Group. He was a driving force behind the founding of the Altano Academy, where he served as Managing Director, and he also acted as CEO and CMO of Altano Benelux. 🇳🇱🇧🇪🇱🇺 His dedication to education and leadership continues to shape the future of equine veterinary medicine.

It’s Veterinary Technician Week, and we’re taking a moment to celebrate the incredible vet nurses, technicians, TFAs, and support teams who contribute to compassionate, high-quality equine care every single day. 🩺

From early mornings to late nights, from patient handling to surgical support: They work with heart, skill, and endless dedication. Across all Altano clinics, in every country, we simply couldn’t provide the best care without them. Thank you for everything you do!

Big news from New Zealand! 🇳🇿

will soon be home to a brand-new, high-performance CT scanner - bringing world-class diagnostic imaging to the region in early 2026.

This is a major step forward for equine veterinary care in New Zealand, where advanced imaging options have been limited until now.

What makes this even more special?
👉 The CT will be available to all veterinarians for read-only use - not just those affiliated with Altano.

It’s a proud moment for the team at Waikato and a shared win for horses, vets, and owners across the country. Here’s to collaboration, innovation, and better care - together!

💙 Meet Jim – a true fighter in a small package.

When the two-year-old Shetland stallion arrived at the clinic in Germany, he was struggling to eat and had severe swelling.

The diagnosis? A complicated, open jaw fracture involving his incisors and first cheek teeth.

Thanks to X-ray and CT imaging, the team was able to plan surgery precisely. Under general anaesthesia, the fracture was stabilised with a plate and screws and Jim was eating better just days later.

After six weeks, the plate was removed while standing, and a small bone fragment was taken out a few weeks later under standing sedation.

Today, Jim is fully recovered and living his best life with his best friend, Jack. 🌿🐴
