Castration or neutering of male dog or cat is surgical removal of the two testicles (orchiectomy) requiring general Anesthesia. The suitable age for castration in dog is from 9 to 12 months and in cats is from 5 to 7 months.

Advantages of casteration:
🔹Prevention of breeding and reducing number of newly born dog and cat.
🔹Prevention of testicular cancer.
🔹Reduction risk of prostate cancer.
🔹Modification of certain behaviors associated with male hormone level.
🔹Prevent spread of genetic disease.
🔹Reduce incidence of urine retention disease.

Disadvantages of casteration?
🔹Obesity so should follow a diet.
🔹Loss some unique breeds.
🔹Depression and loss of activity.

Every month a new case in Betary training academy
—Cushing’s disease in dogs—
Definition:
Occurs when the adrenal gland secretes too much stress hormone or cortisol. Affect dogs at age 7-12 years old.

Causes:
There are two types of Cushing’s disease in dog

1)pituitary dependent (80-85%)
• occur when a tumor of pituitary gland at the base of brain secretes too much of the hormone that stimulates adrenal gland to make cortisol.

2)adrenal gland dependent (15-20%)
• occur when adrenal gland creates too much stress hormone.

Signs:
• polyuria-polydipsia-polyphagia.
• hair loss or poor regrowth & alopecia.
• oily skin & pyoderma and black heads.
• pot belly.
• hepatomegaly& increases liver enzyme.
• urinary tract infection & urine incontinence.
• sudden blindness.

Treatment: Acc to cause
• surgery for adrenal tumor.
• If caused due to excessive steroids dosage, the dosage should be decreased.
• Medications interfere with the production of cortisol.
