A crucial stage in the ICSI procedure is the injection stage, where the s***m is introduced directly into the oocyte.

The injection stage begins after the oocytes have been aspirated and matured. At this point, the embryologist carefully selects a single s***m to be injected into an egg. The goal is to overcome any obstacles in natural fertilization, such as s***m motility issues or structural abnormalities.

The injection stage is one of the most delicate and pivotal steps in the ICSI process. A successful s***m injection begins the cell division through a process called cleavage, where the fertilized egg rapidly divides mitotically to form a blastocyst embryo ready to transfer and grow into your dream foal in roughly 340 days.

Let’s dive into the specialized equipment behind the Intracytoplasmic S***m Injection (ICSI) process. ICSI is a delicate procedure that relies on advanced inverted microscope systems, meticulously designed with both optical precision and temperature control to ensure success. The process begins with the oocyte, gently held by suction by a holding pipette. Its positioning is key, ensuring the s***m injection happens at an optimal site, far from the polar body, a byproduct of meiosis.
The micromanipulator serves multiple functions: it stabilizes the oocyte, enables s***m immobilization, and facilitates the precise injection of s***m into the oocyte’s cytoplasm. A single s***m is carefully aspirated into a micropipette, then gently introduced to the egg, ensuring the best chance for fertilization.
At Genetech, we take this microscopic mission very seriously. Our highly meticulous approach ensures that each oocyte is given the best possible environment to develop into a healthy embryo, maximizing the potential for success.

Following the Oocyte Aspiration, the meticulous process of oocyte isolation begins. The aspirated follicular fluid is filtered through a 75-micron screen, which the average oocyte is double the size at around 160 microns.
After thoroughly rinsing, the filtrate containing potential oocytes is transferred into a grid-marked Petri dish. Our specialists navigate across the grid, identifying and retrieving all oocytes.
The oocytes are counted, assessed for quality, rinsed, temporarily stored in a specialized holding media, and prepared for transport to the GeneTech lab.
Our transport incubators are equipped with precision temperature control to ensure oocyte viability during transit. When they arrive at our laboratory, the embryologist team will promptly attend and prepare the oocytes for maturation and ICSI.
This refined approach to oocyte processing optimizes the conditions to give the best chance of producing a healthy foal. GeneTech team will always care for the details from the beginning to ensure the best results.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀: No, by aspirating your mare, you are utilizing more oocytes that would naturally go to waste.
𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆: All of the primary oocytes remain at a microscopic size within the tissue of the o***y. As a mare naturally “cycles”, a group of these microscopic oocytes are “recruited” and grow to the point that ONLY ONE of them matures enough to ovulate. The rest are naturally discarded as they become atretic and die.
Through oocyte aspiration and ICSI you are harvesting ALL of the available oocytes in a single session, which allows them to be potentially fertilized and not wasted or discarded as they would be in the mare’s natural reproductive cycle.
A mare is born with as many oocytes as she will have but aspirating the ovaries does not damage any of the primordial follicles (tiny oocytes) remaining, as they are microscopic in the ovarian tissue and stay dormant for future cycles.

Here are a few key considerations as you plan for the 2025 breeding season:
🔘 Have you faced multiple unsuccessful flushes?
🔘 Is your mare competing and unable to commit to time at a breeding facility?
🔘 Does your chosen stallion have higher success rates with ICSI or offer an ICSI-only contract?
🔘 Are you aiming to freeze multiple embryos for future use?

At GeneTech, we are dedicated to providing innovative solutions to help preserve and enhance your horse’s legacy. ICSI offers a valuable option when traditional methods fall short or aren’t suitable.
