Dressing Your Dog for Cold Weather Walks

As part of the family, it’s only natural to want to make sure your dog is prepared for the winter months.

Before bundling up your dog like Ralphie in A Christmas Story, there are a few things to keep in mind: Many dogs are prepared to face winter naturally — their fur isn’t called a coat for nothing..

There are some dogs, however, that may need help to stay warm: Small dogs, puppies, the aging pooch and short-haired dogs to be specific. The adage of “If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pet” is one to heed if you’re pet falls into one of those categories.

While buying matching parkas with fur-lined hoods for you and your dog may seem like a good idea, dog jackets don’t have to be too complicated. There are people out there who care about dogs as much as dog owners do and have created various accoutrements to protect pets from anything winter hurls at us. ANIMAL-ANGEL for your pet, that should keep them comfortable in the snow.

Despite the conviction that your dog is the smartest one on the planet, a dog can’t tell you if he or she is cold. But they do shiver, so keep an eye on your pal when playing or walking in the snow if you’re not sure of his or her tolerance. Of course, if you’re someone who needs instant gratification, a veterinarian is the best bet for a quick, reliable answer.

But there’s more! Dogs can get frostbite — and like humans, it can lead to gangrene and necrosis, or the death of flesh, which is subsequently removed. Complete amputation in some cases. On the other side of the spectrum, chemical burns on your dog’s paws due to salt and deicers are also something to watch for. Limping or a strange gait is a dead giveaway, so keep an eye on the way your dog walks. A little paw wax or boots should do the trick. No matter what the temperature is, windchill can threaten a pet's life. Pets are sensitive to severe cold and are at risk for frostbite and hypothermia when they are outdoors during extreme cold snaps. Exposed skin on noses, ears and paw pads can quickly freeze and suffer permanent damage.

Consider using pet-safe deicers on your property to protect your pets and the others in your neighborhood.
