Topic 2, the principle of Denitrification

Denitrifying bacteria and strains source:
Carbon source:

Denitrification in a narrow sense refers to the process of reducing nitrate to molecular nitrogen, which is called denitrification

The significance of denitrification is:
1. Nitrate reduction reduces the concentration of low-toxic nitrate in the water and increases the concentration of nitrite with higher toxicity, which is unfavorable.
2. Denitrogenation reduces the concentration of low-toxic nitrate in the water and turns it into non-toxic nitrogen, which is beneficial.
3. In the reef tank, denitrification will reduce the nitrate that is nutritious to the algae, which is detrimental to the algae.
4. If you want to increase the intensity of denitrification, you can create conditions suitable for the reaction, in which maintaining a suitable pH and a certain concentration of soluble nitrogen-free organic matter is the key
5. Denitrification is of great significance to tanks that do not eliminate the nitrate pathway. Together with good nitrification, it maintains the low nitrogen state in the water, keeps the water quality stable, and prolongs the water change time.

OceanArt Reef Keeping method recommended SUMP setup

Due to high demand on question of what is the best SUMP setup for Reef Keeping method, we answer the question by using this Nano tank as example.

Nano tank usually have limited space for equipment, therefor we found it will be ideal to setup a Nano to show how OceanArt additives works.

Microbiological culture
We found bacteria house is playing an essential role in bring a healthy balance to the water body. In order to let bacteria to thrive in the reeftank, you need to make sure there is a ideal living environment for it. So this is why we replaced the protein skimmer with bio rings and bio balls. They serve as filter material and bacteria house.

Proper lighting
There is no light in the SUMP too, due to some of the selected strains prefer dark instead of strong lighting. That’s why the thick sand bed sometimes doesn’t work.

Sufficient water flow
It is essential for both air exchange, and improve nitrification/denitrification efficiency.

Structure
We try our best to make sure the water will flow through each bio ring/ball, to maximize the strains working result.

Do not over dose, and be patient
Over dosing is a common problem. Everything that our method is relies on is based on is bio based, they need time to get established in a new living environment. The benefit is it will bring a ultimate healthy balance to the water body, but you need to give it time. Once it’s ready to perform, the established eco system will do it’s best to prevent unbalanced situation. The selected strains will do their best to out compete the unwanted bacteria to ensure they will survive, meanwhile we support them with nutrition that is in favor of them to let them win the competition.

OUR NEW FLOATING REEF PROJECT, inspired by .

Aquarium: Red Sea Nano
Lighting: ReefLED 50
Reefscanping: 10kg+- dry rock
Filter: a sump full of bio ring and maxspect bio ball; 2cm sand bed; filter sock;

Tank cycling: 5ml/day

Finally I have some free time to start a project I’ve been looking forward to, a floating reef Nano tank. I hope to help reefkeepers to understand how OceanArt products works by updating the process of cycling the tank from day one till when the reef is thriving in this little tank

So far the mistake i have made is using transparent silicone. It’s very visible at this stage, I hope soon it will be covered by coralline algae.
