Øv dit barn i at forstå, at hesten hverken sur, dum, hoppet, doven, driller, tester, laver ballade etc.

Let’s repeat it for the ones in the back - or front, depends how you see it:

We can train and manage and condition our horses - but we can’t change the fact that they are horses.

Horses are prey animals. Their whole existence is wrapped around the ever on going play in nature between prey and predator.
Their whole being has evolved around the behavior and skills they need to play this game.

They played this game more than 50 million years.
The 5000 years of domestication won’t change that soon.

Your horse is supposed to spook from noise and sight.
Your horse is supposed to bolt when it feels threatened.
Your horse is supposed to buck off what’s on his back.
Your horse is supposed to search for food.
Your horse is supposed to be buddy sour.

All what we call „vices“ is simply a surviving mechanism, implanted deeply into the DNA of every horse.

Your horse lives in a human world, where he has no handbook for in his genes. He is just being a horse.

It’s your task to show him trust, patience, calmness, strength, assertiveness and fairness. But you have to be like this yourself.

You cannot expect what you are not ready to give.

It’s your responsibility to help your horse navigate.

Acts of aggression, confining him, calling him names, defining him as „naughty“, does not teach or proof any horse to behave the right way. It only shows your capability of teaching a horse.

There are so many techniques, methods, tools and trainers all defining „bad behavior“ and their solutions, all hustling and managing around a horse to bend and press it into a form. All of them, that claim to be so knowledgeable, so experienced, so wise, have forgotten, that the horse is just a horse.

🌼Dandelions🌼
The humble dandelion, (taraxacum officinale) is one of the most commonly found weeds in Britain. They are hugely beneficial for horses (and humans too for that matter) but not many people realise it.

Dandelions are rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and copper. They also contain more vitamin A and C than most vegetables and fruit, and also Vitamins B and D. They are also great for offering the liver and kidneys support and are also anti-rheumatic, so have a joint supportive action too. Dandelion leaves are diuretic so could be referred to as a ‘natural electrolyte’ and can be used to relieve fluid retention and cleanse the digestive system. Their high copper content helps to activate zinc, which is essential for wound healing and white blood cell production, as well as fertility.

It is also thought that the white sap found in the stem of a dandelion can be applied topically to warts in horses and humans for treatment.

Horses will often eat dandelions while grazing, and sometimes may also dig up the roots to eat too! It is also available as a herbal supplement to support the action of the liver and kidneys and can be found in herbal mixes for joint support.

A saddle can't.

"A saddle can't make you a better rider!"
"A saddle can't make your horse better!"
"A saddle can't create soundness!"
"A saddle can't make a horse less spooky!"
"A saddle can't prevent lameness!"
"A saddle can't fix bad behavior!"

Skill, training, and discipline are huge parts of success in any sport, as much as equipment. Don't believe me? Try playing hockey with dull skates.
How about surfing with a broken board?
Or racing a car with one flat tire.
Ballroom dancing with shoes that are too tight.
Archery with a bent arrow.
Running with flip-flops (thongs for the Australians).
Skill, training, and discipline are major components, but if your equipment is not suitable, you will always always always always always (getting the point?) always have a disadvantage. And by you, I mean both your and your horse.
"A saddle can't make you a better rider." - In the same way that properly sharpened skates can allow you to function at 100%, as does a saddle fitted to you and your needs. It absolutely can help you to become a more balanced, quieter rider.
"A saddle can't make your horse better." - Try walking around with your feet bound the same way during the 10th century in China and see how well you're able to move about, and how long you can go. A saddle can do 1 of 2 things, but never both. It can provide freedom of movement and freedom from pain, or it can hinder movement and cause pain. A pain-free horse will ALWAYS move better and BE better (physically, psychologically, soundness-wise) than a horse in pain/discomfort.
"A saddle can't create soundness" - Soundness is more than just abscesses and limping, soundness is also the symmetry in the diagonal gaits and also left to right. Soundness is in the muscle fatigue from improper utilization, and also in posture which can either expedite or prevent deterioration of the joints, bones, and other internal structures.
"A saddle can't make a horse less spooky." - Constant, unyielding pain or discomfort causes the horse to remain in flight mode, which means a never-ending spike in cortisol (stress hormone), which makes for a spookier horse who also has difficulty learning and concentrating. A sound, comfortable body makes a quiet, less spooky horse more receptive to training.
"A saddle can't prevent lameness" - If you are walking around in a peculiar posture to compensate for pain, you increase the risk of two things. Firstly, you increase the risk of creating secondary injuries and tension from having to compensate for the wonky posture. Secondly, you increase the risk of direct trauma via tripping/slipping/stepping wrong as you move in a manner you're not accustomed to. To be physically comfortable and not stuck in fight/flight mode, the horse is able to both pay more attention to where they step, but also move correctly (softly, in balance, with even and symmetrical gaits).
"A saddle can't fix bad behavior" - Humans love to anthropomorphize horses by saying they love this, enjoy that, hate this, dislike that person or a certain activity. Truth is, horses, like everything else, dislike pain and stress. Bad behavior is almost always due to physical or psychological stress or trauma. Take away that stress or pain, and you have yourself a quieter, happier horse. A poorly fitted saddle, to a horse, equals pain. Add to that the rider spurring, whipping, yanking, yelling, and bullying the horse to do what the animal cannot physically do without being in pain. That is a recipe for disaster.
When we hear these objections for finding a suitable saddle or getting a saddle fitted, we know already that the person doesn't understand just how incredibly important the saddle is for both horse and rider and the incredible amount of damage an incorrect one can cause.

Udredningen omfatter typisk, at hesten ses under rytter.

Sometimes in my practice I come across an owner who wants to normalize something that isn’t normal.

This sounds like:

❌ My horse works out of the stiffness/lameness after 15 minutes under saddle.
❌ He always crow hops after a bigger jump.
❌She throws her head around in the arena but not on the trail (or vise versa).
❌He always makes a face when I do the girth up.
❌It usually takes me 15 minutes to catch her and I need food to do it.
❌The left lead is always harder to get.
❌She’s always weaved in her stall.

These kinds of statements are usually followed by “that’s just the way he/she is.”

This is your horse speaking to you, over and over and over again. Please listen, before they have to get louder. Stop and think about what behaviors your horse demonstrates that maybe don’t seem totally right to you but you’ve just accepted them as “normal”.

This is a question very much worth asking of yourself, then your horse, then work with your trainer/horse care professionals to get to the bottom of it.

Answer the question as best you can, and you build a deeper, more solid partnership with your horse. Why? Because you listened. And then you did something about it. And your horse knows it.

One of the most common excuses we see riders use to justify practices is this one… but is it true?

The primary concern with this excuse is that it removes any & all accountability from the rider, provided they can make their horse comply with demands.

If the horse engages in the activity, the assumption is that the horse WANTS to do it because if they didn’t, they wouldn’t, right?

What is often missed is all of the attempts the horse gives to try to opt out of tasks they find scary, difficult or unpleasant. Bucking, shying, rearing, bolting or any “bad behaviour” is an attempt on the part of the horse to say no to a task, the problem is, most of us have been taught to “not let the horse get away with it” & make them do the task anyways, effectively taking away their ability to choose not to do it.

So, there is no correlation between obedience & an actual desire to do what their rider asks when it comes to horses. The few studies that have been done on this have actually found that more obedient horses tend to have higher levels of stress, suggesting that, in many cases, horses are obedient despite lack of desire to perform.

When we exist in a community that views attempts from the horse to choose not to perform as “disrespect” or “bad behaviour”, we lose the right to use these types of excuses as the very nature of our training doesn’t allow for the horse to opt out in the first place.

This excuse enables a lot of mistreatment towards horses by providing riders with an easy means of justifying anything they ask the horse to do by saying that the horse wants to do it, because if they didn’t, they wouldn’t.

This assumption is not evidence based & tends to be driven by human ego & is then used to enable ourselves in pushing horses beyond their threshold of tolerance, after having ignored their earlier attempts to refuse what we ask & effectively teaching them through repetition that there is no point in non-compliance, because they’ll continue to be asked until they do it anyways.

We need to examine the excuses we make & whether or not they’re true in practice, or we can inadvertently harm horses while being dishonest to ourselves about what we are doing.

I’m still processing all I learned from Bellus’s dissection. It gave me a closure I’m extremely grateful for, because as you can imagine, it was a very hard decision to make. Putting a beloved horse down is never easy, but there are always the complicated feelings of guilt, wishing you’d done more and known more, regret, and mourning for the life you know your horse deserved. I think I did the best I could, but facts are facts- he suffered, and didn’t deserve it.

The one thing I am certain of is that he was an incredibly generous, beautiful soul. Upon discovering the details of his body, I am also certain that horses are experts in surviving at any cost. Bellus was in chronic pain and thus chronic stress- my priorities might have been good posture and bend and the like, while his were just surviving.

I am confident in saying that we must do better in understanding. We have to take interest in what lies under the skin before we can take the reins and insist on forward, or bend, or collection, because without an idea of the inner workings of a horse, we have no way of monitoring the damage possible.

The things I’ve seen will change me forever - places his body remodeled, places that adhered, places that atrophied, places that were unable to function. It was never a question of not wanting to - it was a case of unable to.

I don’t believe we shouldn’t ride them, or that any refusal is a reason to quit.
But I firmly believe we need to be brave enough to face the repercussions of our ignorance, no matter how well meaning. I believe we have to face our every flaw squarely and stare it down until we are what a horse needs.

They are so generous - you know this only as a nebulous idea until you stare directly at the evidence of all a horse gave even without the ability. The least we can do is give back half that much in growth, in knowledge, in personal change.

The horses deserve it

I kender sikkert fornemnelsen.

Lindrer kramper i bronchierne.
Mangelsymptomer

🐎 Hjerte 🐎 Lunger 🐎 Led 🐎 Sener 🐎 Knogler

Horses are amazingly tolerant, giving creatures.

It unfortunately means they’re often exploited due to the ambitions of the human. After their basic needs are met, you must be very thoughtful in the training of your horse.

Your first duty is to preserve the purity of the paces. What does this mean? Walk has 4 beats, trot has 2, canter has 3, gallop has 4. ALWAYS. If not, something is wrong biomechanically, and your horse is at risk of injury. BTW impure paces can usually be detected in a photograph, even though it is only a “moment in time”, AND this applies to all disciplines.

Strapping a horse’s mouth shut with a crank/flash (or other) noseband very often contributes. The fact is, a horse cannot maintain full range of motion with his hind legs if he can’t move his tongue and jaw. FACT.

For jumping, if the horse bolts off - away from, towards, or after a jump, putting on a bigger bit and a martingale will not fix it. If a horse hesitates or stops, pulling out the whip will NEVER make him more confident.

These are just a few hints that your horse is asking for HELP. Go back. Consolidate the basics. I have a FREE guide to help with this, you can download it now https://www.classicaljumping.com/next-level-freebie

Another wonderful thing about horses is they're retrainable. If you ignore the hints, eventually the horse will either break down, or will SHOUT to get your attention, and you will get hurt.

After all, horses are dangerous. We tell everyone that. But actually they are not. We wouldn’t be able to ride them if they were truly dangerous. You know what’s dangerous? People are.

Ponder this excerpt from Franz Mairinger’s book “Horses are made to be Horses”:

I recall an incident in Sydney when we had a lame horse with a very bad tendon, and the rider wanted to start the horse the next day. We asked Roy Stewart, the veterinary surgeon, and he said, ‘Yes, that’s the trouble. People always think that horses are made for man, but that’s not true. Horses are made to be horses’. I thought about that a lot, and decided that if I should write a book I would call it Horses are made to be Horses.

(Franz Mairinger was the first coach of an Australian Olympic Equestrian Team, his excellent book is out of print, but can occasionally be found second hand - buy it if you see it)
