The Centre for Social Evolution studies the natural evolution of advanced animal societies and the specific adaptations that eusocial organization has brought about. Insect societies are ideal as model systems for social evolution studies because there are tens of thousands of species of ants, bees, wasps and termites. Each of these likely represents an evolutionary stable form of social organizat

ion in its particular ecological setting, and none of them needed culture to evolve. CSE research is driven by inclusive fitness and kin selection paradigms, which have also inspired a research program to understand the ultimate evolutionary backgrounds of pregnancy complications and mental disease in humans.

New CSE publication shows ant queen secretions dope sperm to swim faster When exposed to secretions from a queen's sexual tract, sperm gets activated and swims over 50% faster in the leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex echinatior. Speed is believed to be crucial because each queen mates with multiple males whose sperm compete to access her sperm storage organ. When this race is over in a matter of hours, queens will use stored sperm to fertilise thousands of eggs throughout a life-span of 10-20 years. Getting more sperm stored therefore means higher reproductive success for males, even when realized many years after they are dead and gone.
