This pair of choughs is on the final stage of its nest-building, a lovely soft layer of horse hair.

Watch our LIVE web cam here https://paradisepark.org.uk/events-and-news/chough-nestcam/ showing nest box 3 (we monitor all the nests and choose one to show, depending on the activity going on at any particular time.)

Some of the cameras have tiny lights inside the nestbox and at night they switch to infra-red so the birds can be seen roosting, incubating eggs or brooding chicks 24 hours a day.

As well as images, there is also sound from the nests. We find this helpful to understand if the adults are doing their ‘feeding call’. This call is needed early on as the chicks don’t open their eyes for a few days and need an audible signal to know that it is the right time to open their mouths for food.

Back in 2017 we were blessed by a surprise visit by a flock of Scarlet Honeyeaters that stayed for two three weeks. Haven't seen them since. Beautiful birds. Loved photographing them.

When this is your national bird and you can boast the fastest human on Earth (Usain Bolt), then there is more than a little something going for your small island nation. I give you JAMAICA, home of Blue Mountain Coffee, reggae music, Red Stripe beer, and reggae birds like this Red-billed Streamertail, which can only be found in Jamaica! Sam Woods

Eastern Spinebill

The Eastern Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris) is a small, vibrant honeyeater native to eastern and southeastern Australia. With its sleek, curved beak perfectly adapted for feeding on nectar, the spinebill forages among flowering shrubs and trees. Its plumage is striking, featuring a blend of rich chestnut, white, and black, with a distinctive red eye that gives it a sharp, alert expression. Often seen in gardens, forests, and woodlands, this energetic bird is also known for its rapid, darting flight and its melodious, high-pitched calls.

NATIONAL EUCALYPT DAY - SUNDAY 23RD MARCH 2025

They might have lucked out in the stakes to win the tag as Australia’s floral emblem, in favour of the showy wattle. But eucalypts do have their own national day - March 23. And for good reason, Eucalyptus are uniquely Australian, with 894 of the 900 varieties native to our continent (CSIRO).

The CSIRO also tells us things you might not know about eucalypts and how they define Australia:

• Eucalypts are the tallest flowering plant on Earth
• Eucalypts give Australia much of its colour and smell
• Eucalypts demonstrate what makes our environments efficient
• Eucalypts are the great survivors

Eucalypts are the greatest recyclers of CO₂ and key to how this continent responds to greenhouse gas emissions.

Our Eucalyptus Lawn was planted to show visitors a range of indigenous species of eucalypt and to provide a shaded area for public use as a venue for picnics, weddings and other events.

The Eucalypt photographs in this collage were taken by volunteer and Gardens pioneer, Kevin Stokes.

A stunning sight—an endangered Ngolyenok / Carnaby’s black cockatoo feeding on banksia flowers. 💛🖤

Once seen in flocks of thousands, populations have plummeted as their breeding and feeding habitats are destroyed across south-west WA. Sadly, deforestation for bauxite mining in the jarrah forests is one of the key threats pushing this species to the brink of extinction.

Mining doesn’t just clear habitat—it permanently destroys the forests these birds need to survive.

🌳 Want to help us protect WA's jarrah forests from forest mining? Add your name to the call to end deforestation of the jarrah: www.wilderness.org.au/action-for-jarrah
