We are now living in the Dominican Republic and will continue to share our journey here and the different agriculture we explore here. Follow our journey as we strive to share what we learn about agriculture and organic gardening in the DR.

We discovered yesterday that we have neem trees right in our yard!
I’ve been making a paste for a nasty bug bite I got when I visited a friend in the USA last week.
It’s been helping bring down the swelling. 🥰.
Now I’ll be researching tea and maybe even neem oils. 😍

Update! We have sold a few paintings to send one young lady to camp! Whoot!
We have plenty more!

Special announcement! We’re coming to Kamloops at the end of July for a short few days!
Yes…. We can bring you a painting if you wish to support these young ladies!

This gives them a chance to just be kids for a little while! Many work very hard at home and in the village. They had recently been hit by major flooding and lost much of what they had and every little bit helps!
There are other projects for this village that also need help if you are not interested in a painting but to donate towards fixing houses, roofs, helping the elderly and much more. I can send you info of who to speak with.
(I just volunteer my painting, time and love- but there are organizers who get things done and know stuff). 😜🥰.

We had the amazing opportunity to teach a paint class with these beautiful young women from a small village.
This village has a lot of needs and these young women really appreciate any opportunity to experience other activities like camp outside their village.
As part of a fundraiser for camp- we are selling their beautiful paintings.
Our family will be in Kamloops later July this year and we can bring paintings with us to deliver to you. 😍😍😍.
Even if you can not buy a painting or donate- please like and share the page.

Found some ripe sweet bananas in the back of the garden today.
Each plant only produces bananas once then it needs to be cut down. We chop it up and place around the plant growing from the first one. Each plant replaces itself with new “pups”. So once you cut down the first ine- the nutrients then go into the second plant.

Update- I cut it open and it was still delicious but on the verge of being too overripe. Life gave me a nemon- so I made a lemonade slushy.
And yes- it’s a lemon.

The biggest lemon I’ve ever seen.
Unfortunately I did realize I even had this tree- and that they were ready. So this one’s over ripe now. But I know for next year.

For the first year I can remember- I didn’t plant a vegetable garden. (Planting season here is November-January for most things).
I have horrible red soil that I’m working on building up with compost and manure. I will be digging 2 large huglekultures as I gather materials in time for November to plant again.

Meanwhile- I have a beautiful, self seeded tomato plant growing out of my rock wall that’s mocking me every day. 😂

It’s currently being staked to a dustpan with a brick on it. 😂🍅

I’m definitely saving seeds from these. 😅

The floods that came through have destroyed everything in many peoples homes. Especially in the already lower income places. The waters came up to the roofs in some houses. Destroying everything. :(.
We bringing clothing and blankets and things to those in need. If any friends here have anything clean to give- we can fill our van and bring it to a distributor to hand out.
If anyone from Canada or elsewhere would like to contribute and want me to purchase anything to donate- private message me please. Food, clothing, bedding, etc.

We had a tropical rainstorm pass through yesterday afternoon.
Our house is fine, as the drainage is well built. Our road has a little damage that can be fixed with some work today.
Some parts of our town as well as Anels community were badly flooded.

The pictures are of my little side street and yard and one from lower in the community.

The birds are singing today and the sun is shining.

Have you ever eaten coconut sprouts?
We have friends visiting from Kamloops and decided to share one with them.

This is a coconut that fell around 9 months ago and started sprouting with a root in the ground and a beautiful green sprout up top.
We cut off the outer surrounding shell and then cracked open the brown coconut shell (like the ones you see in stores).
After 9 months, the coconut water becomes an edible sponge like solid surrounded by an oily, crisp, thin coconut layer that is also edible.
It does not have much flavour but the health benefits are amazing.
(Google coconut sprout health benefits). 🥰.

Have you ever tried tamarind juice?
It’s a popular local drink here that comes from a tree with bean like pods filled with seeds surrounded by a pulp.
It doesn’t look great in the little baggy packs sold from the fruit trucks… but once made into juice it’s pretty delicious.

Some interesting things around my yard today.
Custard apple fruit, bananas, coconut tree climber getting coconuts from the tallest tree, and a tarantula in my carport that was relocated into the garden.

Our papayas that seeded themselves last spring are growing nicely.
Lots of fresh aloe Vera. Plantain is almost ready and a few mangos growing in the tree that produces mostly in the late summer.

Do you remember all those cute crocheted items we used to sell in our store?
Alyssa is still crocheting and this is her most recent creation. 😍🐨

She has been selling her items at the market almost every Saturday and has quite the following.

Eric climbs the tree everyday and collects a huge bag of these beautiful “apples”.
If you look closely- you can see him waaaay up in the tree. 😅
I’ve made 6 “apple” crisps now and froze 4 for later.
Yesterday we walked down to a little community (who does not have electricity or running water) to bring a big bag and a few other necessities. The kids ran over and devoured the apples with huge smiles and my heart grew so much bigger. We will bring them more in a few days.

We gifted some to our neighbour and his gardener.
I love that these are ready around Christmas so we can give delicious gifts to those who need it most.

Today we are going to make ginger/apple juice. My fave.

The rolling thunder is almost an everyday occurrence in August here. Morning, noon amd night. It’s spectacular with the deep house shaking (and our house is brick/cement and still shakes) feels like I live below a bowling alley. 😜. The flashes of lightening all night filling our room. ⚡️. I thought I’d share a little with you. Turn up your volume.
