Get to know your dog:

a. Did you know that dogs move 7 times faster than humans? Speed is critical for dogs; the faster you move the more they will pay attention to you.

b. Did you know that your dog has 6 pads on its front paw and only 5 on its back paw? Take a look and see if you can find the 6th one on the front…

c. Did you know that dogs have 42 teeth? That’s 10 more than the average adult!

d. Did you know that dogs have belly buttons? Take a look on your dogs belly to see if you can find it.

e. Did you know that dogs have between 1,000 to 10,000 times better sense of smell than humans? This is a rough estimate and dependent on the breed of dog… but still!

Getting to know your dog is fun!

Take the time to learn about your furry buddy,
they can teach you a lot!

Pets and poison is a growing concern among pet owners. Household poisons are not the only thing that can harm your pets. Many common household foods and drugs can also be toxic to your pets. The following are foods that can be toxic or poisonous to your pets.

Avocados
Avocados contain a toxin known as persin. Persin is found in various parts of the avocado and avocado trees (eg, leaves, rind, etc). This toxin is known mostly to cause vomiting and diarrhea. Birds and small pets seem most affected by the negative side effects of consuming avocado.

Beer
Not just beer…all alcohol. Depending on how much alcohol your animal ingests, it can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, depression, difficulty breathing, coma, and possible death.

Chocolate
Chocolate contains a compound called theobromine that is toxic to pets. If enough is ingested, your animal can suffer from vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, seizures, and possible death. Cocoa mulch contains theobromine; the ASPCA advises dog owners to avoid using this fertilizer around unsupervised dogs, and dogs with indiscriminate eating habits since it can be toxic if ingested.

Candy
Chocolate is the most common candy that is toxic to pets, especially to dogs, cats and ferrets. Any candy containing the sweetener xylitol can also be toxic to pets.

Caffeine
Caffeine is generally highly toxic to pets, having negative effects on both the cardiac and nervous systems. Side effects can include vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, seizures, and possible death.

Grapes and raisins
An unknown toxin in grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure and ultimately lead to death. Symptoms of this poisoning can include hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea, and irregular heartbeat.

Nuts
An unknown toxin in nuts can have negative effects on the nervous, digestive, and muscular systems of your pet. Symptoms can include muscle tremors, weakness, an upset stomach, vomiting, depression, inactivity, and stiffness. Particularly avoid Macadamia nuts.

Onions
Onions, along with garlic and chives, are all part of the same species of plant—the Allium species. Allium species plants contain sulfur compounds that can cause stomach irritation and possibly result in damage to red blood cells causing anemia. This is referred to as Allium poisoning.

Some human medicines
While some human medications are prescribed for pets by veterinarians, others can be highly toxic and fatal. Acetaminophen, which is contained in Tylenol and other similar products, for example, can be fatal to cats. Always consult with your veterinarian before giving human medication to a pet.

Xylitol (artificial sugar)
Xylitol is a sweetener used in many products including mouthwash, chewing gum, toothpaste, and various foods. Because it is toxic to pets, products containing xylitol should not be given to your dog or cat.

Lilly Plants

All portions of the lilly plant are poisonous to cats when ingested. Just a nibble of the leaf, petal or stem can cause irreversible kidney failure despite extensive medical treatment.

New Human Tick-borne Virus Identified

Another day, another new infectious disease. What to expect after your pet's vaccination?

It is common for pets to experience some or all of the following mild side effects after receiving a vaccine, usually starting within hours of the vaccination. If these side effects last for more than a day or two, or cause your pet significant discomfort, it is important for you to contact your veterinarian:

Discomfort and local swelling at the vaccination site
Mild fever
Decreased appetite and activity
Sneezing, mild coughing, "snotty nose" or other respiratory signs may occur 2-5 days after your pet receives an intranasal vaccine
More serious, but less common side effects, such as allergic reactions, may occur within minutes to hours after vaccination. These reactions can be life-threatening and are medical emergencies. Seek veterinary care immediately if any of these signs develop:

Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
Itchy skin that may seem bumpy ("hives")
Swelling of the muzzle and around the face, neck, or eyes
Severe coughing or difficulty breathing
Collapse
A small, firm swelling under the skin may develop at the site of a recent vaccination. It should start to disappear within a couple weeks. If it persists more than three weeks, or seems to be getting larger, you should contact your veterinarian.

Always inform your veterinarian if your pet has had prior reactions to any vaccine or medication. If in doubt, wait for 30-60 minutes following vaccination before taking your pet home.

Cat Fever Treatment

http://www.catfevertreatment.com/

If your cat is generally lethargic and has no appetite, it might have a fever. If your cats ears feel hot to the touch it might have a cat fever. Most people think that a cold, wet nose is a sign of a healthy cat, and that a warm, dry nose is a sign of a fever in a cat. This is NOT ALWAYS TRUE! It’s...

DOES YOUR CAT HAVE A FEVER?

A warm, dry nose or warm ears does not indicate a fever in a cat.The
only way to be certain about the presence of a fever is by actually taking
a cat’s temperature. The normal body temperature of a cat is higher
than that of a human. (about 38° - 39.2° C)

What Causes a Fever?

In a cat, a fever is generally considered to be a temperature reading
above 39.4° C. Increased body temperature does not always mean the
animal is sick, but if the cat has a fever you should try to find out why.
An increased body temperature can be due to:
• High environmental temperature
• Stress or excitement, such as putting the cat into a carrier and
taking him to the veterinarian
• Intense playing or running
• Bacterial infections
• Viral infections
• Seizures due to increased muscle activity

What You Should Do if Your Cat Has a Fever?

If you suspect that your cat has a fever, be sure he is someplace cool.
Do not give any over-the-counter medications made for humans to reduce a cat’s fever.
If the cat is alert and acting normal, check his temperature again
in an hour.
You can hose a cat down with cold water to bring down his
temperature, but this rather radical treatment should be reserved for
cases when the temperature is above 41° C.
You can also apply rubbing alcohol to the cat’s footpads to cool him, but if the cat then licks his feet, he will drool a bit.
Whenever a cat has a fever, it is best to have the cat examined by a
veterinarian as soon as possible.
The doctor will try to determine what triggered the fever and then offer options for treatment. Cold fluids can be injected into a cat to cool him down. If a fever persists for more than 24 hours, more extensive nursing care and diagnostic testing are probably warranted.

Signs of Mouth and Throat Disease:

An important sign of mouth pain is a change in eating behavior.
A dog with a tender mouth eats slowly and selectively, dropping food that is particularly coarse and large.

A dog with pain on one side of the mouth often tilts his / her head and chews on the opposite side. With an extremely painful mouth, the dog stops eating altogether.

Excessive drooling is common in all painful mouth diseases. It is often
accompanied by bad breath. Any form of halitosis (bad breath) is abnormal.
Periodontal disease and gingivitis are the most common causes of halitosis in dogs.

Sudden gagging, choking, drooling, and difficulty swallowing suggest a foreign
object in the mouth or throat.
Difficulty opening and closing the mouth is characteristic of head and neck
abscesses, nerve damage, or jaw injuries.
