Gli egiziani consideravano i gatti,soprattutto quelli neri un’incarnazione degli dei e li adoravano. Pertanto, era illegale per chiunque uccidere un gatto, anche accidentalmente. La pena per questo grave peccato era la morte. Inoltre, le famiglie piangevano la morte dei loro gatti come quella di un membro della famiglia ed i proprietari venivano mummificati insieme ai propri amici a quattro zampe nella stessa tomba.
