Herbal remedies have long been effective in treating human ailments. But they can be equally as efficient in treating your dog's problems, and there is probably a garden full of them just outside your back door. But why use herbal remedies when we have modern medicine?
โค๏ธ๐Ÿถ
While modern medication has come a long way, antibiotics and a host of other drugs bring with them a world of side effects. Plus, too much use can negatively impact your dogโ€™s health in the long term.

How to Select Herbs for Canine-friendly Remedies
โœ…Select fresh-smelling and healthy-looking green leaves. You want the freshest ingredients to ensure your remedy has the optimal effect.
โœ…Avoid herbs with brown leaves or with bits missing. They are past their peak and may have already been breakfast, lunch, and dinner for neighboring moths.
โœ…Be sure to select herbs that havenโ€™t been sprayed with any pesticides or herbicides. You are probably exploring the herbal remedy route to avoid giving your dog chemicals, so be sure the herbs you select are chemical-free.
โœ…With dry herbs, avoid leaves that are too brittle. This is a sure sign they are too old and are lacking in their original goodness.

๐Ÿพ ๐ŸŒŸ Ticks are foul little parasites that hide in your dogโ€™s fur and attach themselves to their skin to feed. Because they feed for hours while attached to your furry buddy, they have plenty of time to transmit whatever disease they are carrying to your dog. Ticks can cause health problems for your companion as well as others in your household, whether four-legged or two. They are known for carrying Lyme disease and other nasty afflictions that can cause short and long-term health problems for anyone bitten.

โšœ๏ธEssential oils have been used for centuries as natural remedies for various ailments in humans and animals. Essential oils are easy to obtain from your local health food store. These oils are highly concentrated, so they are typically measured by the drop. Usually, they should be diluted with a carrier oil such as coconut or olive oil.

โšœ๏ธCitrus is a natural repellent for many insects. Citrus works against ticks too. Boil the peels of lemons and oranges, then let them cool at room temperature in the water for 24 hours. Once your mixture is cool, the natural citrus oil will seep from the fruit rinds and into your water. This water can be strained and poured into a spray bottle. Your citrus spray can be used on your dogโ€™s fur and around your house, in doorways, and your yard.

โšœ๏ธApple cider vinegar is an easy-to-use natural tick repellant. You can add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar per quart of water to your dogโ€™s water bowl to keep ticks away from your dog.

To keep ticks from your yard, try the following tips:

โœ…Maintain your yard by keeping the grass cut.
โœ…Remove brush.
โœ…Design a cedar barrier around your yard, but you must install a fence to keep your dog from ingesting the cedar.

๐Ÿพ Embarking on the paw-some journey of puppy parenthood?

๐ŸŒŸ Let's talk about those crucial red-flag behaviors that might crop up in your furry bundle of joy! ๐Ÿšฉ Early intervention is key to fostering a well-behaved and balanced canine companion. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿšจ Red Flag #1: Excessive Chewing - Puppies explore the world through their mouths, but if a dog's chewing habits are turning your favorite shoes into a chew toy, it's time to redirect that energy.

๐Ÿšจ Red Flag #2: Aggressive Play - While play is essential, watch for signs of overexcitement or aggression during playtime. nip it in the bud before it becomes a bigger issue.

๐Ÿšจ Red Flag #3: Excessive Barking - Communication is key, but constant barking might signal anxiety or a need for attention. Understanding the cause is crucial for effective training.

๐Ÿšจ Red Flag #4: Avoidance or Fearful Behavior - If your pup is hesitant or avoids certain situations, it's vital to address these fears early to prevent anxiety and promote confidence.

๐Ÿšจ Red Flag #5: Inconsistent Bathroom Habits - Accidents happen, but frequent mishaps may indicate a need for more diligent potty training.

๐Ÿšจ Red Flag #6: Unsettled Sleep Patterns - A restless pup might be trying to communicate discomfort or anxiety. Establishing a consistent sleep routine can work wonders.

๐Ÿ• Remember, every pup is unique, and patience is your best ally. ๐Ÿ™Œ ๐Ÿกโค๏ธ

๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿพ Puppy biting is a normal part of their development, but fear not, parents! Here are 3 awesome ways to handle those nippy moments:

1๏ธโƒฃ Redirect & Reward: Puppies explore the world with their mouths, so when those teeth latch on, redirect their attention to a chew toy or a tasty treat. Positive reinforcement teaches them that biting toys equals treats, making it a win-win situation! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฆด

2๏ธโƒฃ Be Consistent with Commands: Introduce simple commands like "gentle" or "soft" when your pup starts to nibble. Reinforce good behavior with praise and treats when they follow your commands. Consistency is key, and soon they'll associate gentle play with positive outcomes! ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

3๏ธโƒฃ Teach Bite Inhibition: When they bite too hard, let out a yelp or say "ouch" in a high-pitched voice to mimic a littermate's reaction. This helps them understand that biting too hard isn't acceptable, and they'll gradually learn to soften their bites. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿšซ

Remember, patience and positive reinforcement go a long way in shaping your furry friend's behavior. ๐ŸŒŸ Enjoy these playful moments, knowing that with a bit of guidance, your pup will grow into a well-behaved companion. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•

08/12/2023

๐Ÿพโค๏ธ Let's talk about a topic that often raises eyebrows: the impact of your dog's breed on their behavior. While breed characteristics do play a role in shaping your pup's personality, it's important to remember that behavior is influenced by many factors, including upbringing, training, and individual variation. In today's post, we'll explore how breed can be a piece of the puzzle, but not the whole picture.

๐Ÿถ Breed Characteristics ๐Ÿถ
It's true that different breeds come with distinct traits and tendencies. Border Collies excel in herding, while Greyhounds are built for speed. Breeds like Golden Retrievers are known for their friendly nature, and some terriers have a penchant for digging. These general traits can provide insight into your dog's behavior, but they don't define them.

๐Ÿก Upbringing and Environment ๐Ÿก
A well-trained and socialized dog can overcome breed predispositions and be a loving and well-behaved companion.

๐Ÿง  Individual Variation ๐Ÿง
Just like us, dogs are individuals. Within any breed, you'll find a wide range of personalities and temperaments. What may hold true for one dog of a particular breed may not apply to another.

๐Ÿ† It's Not a Blame Game ๐Ÿ†
Understanding breed tendencies can be helpful in making informed decisions, such as selecting a breed that aligns with your lifestyle. However, it's crucial not to blame your dog's breed for their behavior challenges. All dogs, regardless of their breed, can be wonderful companions with the right guidance and support.

๐Ÿพ Celebrate Diversity ๐Ÿพ
Rather than seeing breed as a limitation, consider it as an opportunity to embrace and nurture the qualities that make your dog special. It's all about fostering a strong bond and understanding your dog as an individual, beyond their breed. ๐Ÿถ

Today, we're sharing four quick and easy techniques to help you nurture calmness in your dog. After all, a serene pup is a happy pup, and a happy pup makes for a joyful and peaceful household.

2๏ธโƒฃ Mindful Strolls: This teaches your dog to focus, relax, and enjoy the world around them with a sense of calm.

3๏ธโƒฃ Peaceful Retreats: You can use soothing scents, soft music, or even a beloved toy to make it extra inviting.

4๏ธโƒฃ Cuddle and Massage: This tactile connection can alleviate tension and foster a sense of tranquility.

Today, we're sharing some tips to make car rides a positive and stress-free adventure for your four-legged companion. ๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸŒŸ Addressing Motion Sickness First ๐ŸŒŸ
If your dog's car anxiety is linked to motion sickness, it's essential to tackle this issue head-on. Consult your veterinarian to discuss options like medications or dietary changes that can help alleviate nausea and discomfort. Solving this underlying problem can be a game-changer for your pup.

๐Ÿš— Gradual Exposure ๐Ÿš—
Just like us, dogs can be anxious about things they're not used to. Start with short, low-stress trips around the block and gradually extend the duration as your dog becomes more comfortable. This helps them get acclimated to the movement and environment.

๐Ÿ• Create Positive Associations ๐Ÿ•
Make the car a fun place to be! Use treats, toys, and praise to reward your dog for getting in the car, staying calm, and enjoying the ride. Associating the car with positivity can help reduce anxiety over time.

๐Ÿค— Comfort and Familiarity ๐Ÿค—
Make the car cozy and familiar for your pup. Bring their favorite blanket or toy along, and use a secure harness or carrier to ensure their safety. Familiar scents can also provide a sense of comfort.

๐Ÿš™ Frequent Breaks ๐Ÿš™
Plan for regular pit stops during longer journeys. This allows your dog to stretch their legs, have a drink, and take a bathroom break. It's an excellent way to break up the trip and keep stress levels in check.

๐Ÿงก Patience and Consistency ๐Ÿงก
Every dog is unique, and progress may be gradual. Be patient, and stay consistent with your training efforts. Over time, your dog can learn to associate car rides with adventure and bonding time with you.

๐Ÿพ Share your own car ride success stories or tips in the comments below, and let's support each other on this journey to happy, stress-free travels with our pups! ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿšซ Mastering the Art of Polite Greetings! ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿพ

We all know that enthusiastic, full-body, airborne greetings from our furry friends can be quite charming, but not everyone appreciates it as much as we do! Jumping on people can be a bit overwhelming, and it's important to ensure your dog's social skills are top-notch. ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ•

๐Ÿงก It teaches them to be calm AROUND people.
Dogs who jump typically don't know how to calm exist around other people. New people trigger massive excitement, which leads to jumping.

๐ŸงกIf your dog can't calmly exist around another person, it certainly can't calmly greet someone.

๐Ÿพ Work on calmness first.
๐Ÿพ The dog shouldn't meet everyone.
๐Ÿพ Teaching your dog to ignore people will help with polite greetings.

Let's work together! Get help teaching your dog to calmly greet people without jumping.

5 things (that donโ€™t include having a backyard) that rescues could encourage/require to ensure a good home:

1. Trial periods.
How many dogs do you know were โ€œreturned five timesโ€? People who adopt dogs that arenโ€™t the right fit will not keep them just because a paper says they should. And people who adopt dogs that arenโ€™t the right fit SHOULDNโ€™T have to keep them.

2. Utilizing a dog trainer.
Understanding how to fulfill and work with a new dog would drop the number of incompatible homes overnight.
Rescues that are well-funded could partner with trainers to offer one lesson to โ€œcash inโ€, less funded rescues could push business cards and flyers.

3. Management.
Tethering in the home. Crating when left alone. Food games to keep the dog entertained. How to enrich a dog indoors. Where to take them if theyโ€™re struggling with reactivity. KEEPING A LEASH ON THE DOG.
If owners arenโ€™t ready to fix problems, at the very least they should be educated on preventing them.

4. Saying NO to dog parks.
Adopting a new dog and taking them to the dog park is the equivalent of meeting a stranger on the street and immediately bringing them to a fight club.

5. Breed awareness.
DNA tests arenโ€™t 100% accurate, but compared to looking at a dog and making an assumption, itโ€™s the best weโ€™ve got.
โ€จRescue dogs are often seen as a โ€œwatered downโ€ purebred, but thatโ€™s not always true.

Regardless of intent, tasking an owner with a technique without first explaining why the behavior is occurring in the first place will cripple both humans and dogs.

Sure, there are times when why a dog is doing something isnโ€™t as important or potentially is unknown, but in general we should explain thoroughly why the dog is doing or has a specific behavior.

The whole give a person a fish saying applies here. If you educate owners as to why their dog is behaving in a certain way they can adjust their own behavior accordingly. This prevents future mistakes or missteps.

Even for humans, we seek to know the why of something so we have a full and comprehensive understanding of the concept.

When trainers donโ€™t explain why, they force owners to rely on them for information and interactions which is highly unethical. Teach your owners, educate them, and donโ€™t just rush into doing things. Slow down and explain why the dog is offering that behavior.

05/11/2023

Itโ€™s easy to cripple our dogs with โ€œloveโ€. When I meet insecure and fearful dogs I am usually dealing with an owner thatโ€™s treating their dog like a fragile egg they are deathly afraid will break. I think itโ€™s a perfectly normal human reaction to not want to stress out our dogs more, thatโ€™s empathy. What we may not realize is that by attempting to shelter our dogs from any stress at all, we rob them of any opportunity to learn how to deal with and cope with stress.

Babying our dogs by avoiding anything theyโ€™re uncomfortable with at all costs is guaranteed to make their fears and anxieties worse.

Your dog doesnโ€™t like the vacuum? Condition them to get used to it. Your dog isnโ€™t a fan of the crate? Work them through it. Your dog doesnโ€™t like the rain? Walk them outside and play with them in the rain.

Anything your dog is uncomfortable with RUN TO IT with an open mind to train. If your dog doesnโ€™t like something itโ€™s not a cue to avoid it, itโ€™s a cue to help them through it!

Healthy relationships are built on respect and trust, not constantly watching for the other party to make a mistake so you can punish them. โฃ
โฃ
Dogs are allowed to make mistakes. They donโ€™t get hurt, yelled at, or yanked around. We just help them. Like good parents helps their kids. We make mistakes, too, and our dogs are pretty darn accepting of my imperfections, so the least we can do is return the favor. โฃ

Positive training is actually more effective
"Dogs trained exclusively using reward-based methods were reported to be significantly more obedient than those trained using either punishment or a combination of reward and punishment."

No.

Treats are used to teach a new behavior and then reinforce it. There's nothing wrong with rewarding good behavior, but you can fade treats out as your dog starts to fully understand the behavior.

You wonโ€™t always have to treat all the time, though. Just make sure your dog knows the behavior well before you cut back. If they know โ€˜sitโ€™ well at home, you can slow down on treats for sit and only treat the good ones. Do they struggle with it at the dog park? If not, youโ€™re not ready to ditch the treats there yet! Itโ€™s not all or nothing, slow down on treats in the areas you can and keep it up where you need to. โฃ

08/10/2023

Itโ€™s easy to get caught up in societyโ€™s expectations of a normal dog or a good dog - the dog who falls asleep at the pub while we have a drink on the patio, the dog who happily bounds around the dog park making friends everywhere, the dog whoโ€™s the star of doggy daycare, the dog who loves adventures and outings, the dog we see in our daily lives and on tv and social media. โฃ
โฃ
But there's another, under-appreciated kind of normal or good dog - the dog who doesnโ€™t like the dog park, the dog who doesnโ€™t enjoy lounging on a public patio with music and loads of people, the dog who gets stressed in new places and prefers new people ignore him. โฃ
โฃ
It is just fine if your dog isnโ€™t a social butterfly. Introverts are normal, too. โฃ

04/10/2023

Iโ€™ve noticed that dog owners often focus on the wrong thing. Theyโ€™ll do obedience class after obedience class, never realizing that obedience isnโ€™t the answer. It doesnโ€™t matter if a dog can heel if theyโ€™re attacking the other dog in the home. Obedience wonโ€™t fix that. โฃ
โฃ
Obedience wonโ€™t fix the emotionally dysregulated dog who is scared of strangers and lunges and snarls at them. โฃ
โฃ
Obedience wonโ€™t help prepare a puppy for life, build confidence and optimism, teach coping skills, teach them how to think independently or help prevent aggression or anxiety. โฃ
โฃ
Raising and training a dog is about so much more than sitting, staying, and healing. Letโ€™s build resilient, confident, optimistic dogs instead of โ€œobedientโ€ ones. โฃ
