Ahhh this Instagram memory from 2021 made me laugh. That’s when we took in our first box of six street kittens on a freezing cold Valentines Day night. There were five Mau tabbies and one all-black kitten. We put different colored ponytail holders around their necks as collars so we could tell them apart. That’s the names you see here. They all had ringworm all over their faces. I didn’t know I just thought they were crusty from eating with their whole head(not knowing they were too young to be eating read food). They all had worms. I didn’t know what to do about that either. They all had eye infections. Not a clue. They were a month old and all fat and healthy. But I didn’t know anything except that they were tiny. I was sure they would alll die. And, by the way, all six of them were boys. So I didn’t know how to gender them either, clearly. Oh how far I’ve come since then. And all of it was trial, error, YouTube and great mentors. I hope I can be that now, for others who are learning to rescue kittens.

Big Sister ā¤ļøāœØ She gets her name from her personality, not her size. She is the streetest street kitten we’ve had in a long time (giving Petra vibes!). She sleeps in Troy’s bed. She eats spaghetti from my plate. She runs Granita off the couch and sends the Big Boys scurrying when she has the Zoomies. She is so busy. She clocks 20,000 steps a day, easily. She gets locked outside the bedrooms at night because bedrooms are for resting and she never rests. In an other life, she was a golden retriever. Her name is Amal, but all you ever hear around here is ā€œSister, chill.ā€

When I had The Sisters spayed two weeks ago (they are almost 5 months old), I also scheduled the eye removal procedure for Sabrine’s troublesome left eye. This is the eye that has ruptured multiple times over the last 5 months. It has taken so so much much longer to settle than Briseis’s eyes ever did and also much longer than Amal’s eyes. But I decided at the last minute to cancel the enucleation procedure. Just something in my heart told me not to do it. I can’t explain it. So everyone came home with all their eyes… again.

Sabrine’s left eye ruptured for the last time on Monday of this week and the rupture produced this dangling piece of the eyeball that sent me straight back to scheduling surgery for her (swipe to image 2). But this morning, this piece of her eye has fallen off, and this is how her eye looks now. I won’t say ā€˜beautiful’ but it’s definitely looking the closest to normal it’s ever been.

Now we are medicating the eye in precaution, to keep infections away, but I am so hopeful that this long, difficult process has finally come to a conclusion, and I didn’t have to suture their eyelids shut.

Please, please do not worry that she has been suffering throughout this process. I always put her comfort first and she has continued to be active and playful ā¤ļø

Calling all cat people. Little Sister has a bad case of chin acne. I’ve tried everything: coconut oil, medicated spray, I’ve got the fancy little tools and brushes and the ā€œblack seedā€ cream but nothing is working. Ive been treating her everyday for five days and each new day it is coming back the same. I’ve even shaved the hair off her chin to make cleaning it easier, but she’s got it bad. Does anybody have any great ideas that have worked for you in the past?

The Sisters are going to see the doctor tomorrow for Spay Day. They’re still small, but Amal’s first heat this past week has been exhausting. It’s time to get this done already.

We may also come home with sutured eyes. You guys know this will crush me, but I don’t like these watery hollow sockets and Sabrine’s bulging left eye isn’t healing. I’ve given it three months and I’m out of ideas.

My 4 1/2 month old kitten is in heat.

I’ve always heard that this is possible, and I’ve often quoted this warning as part of my spay-and neuter-your-pets call to action. But now I am seeing it with my own eyes. This petite, skinny kitten and her tiny body could not possibly carry a litter of babies. OMG. And yet she is meowling and crying and following my males around with her backside up in the air. She is obviously uncomfortable, and she’s making all the rest of us uncomfortable as well. It’s so unsettling and disturbing. She’s still a baby. EWWW!

So on the street, she would obviously get pregnant right away, like this. And knowing her body is too small to carry a litter, I know that getting pregnant would kill her. And all her babies would die also.

So here’s the thing.

Kittens CAN get pregnant at 4-5 months old. And it’s a death sentence. So don’t buy into the myth that you have to wait until they’re a year old to get them sterilized. In Egypt, the minimum requirement is 4 months old or 4 pounds (2 kg). If your vet won’t spay at 4 months old, find another vet. In the US, they will spay a kitten at two months old, so don’t be scared into thinking they’re too young.

At our rescue, we’ve now seen the proof. And The Sisters will both be spayed this Saturday.

Maybe it’s just us having stupid married-couple convos, but Younes and I have this conversation that goes ā€œso if we ever got a divorce, how would we split up all the cats?ā€ And we can pretty much sort it out easily except for this guy. This one would end us up in a nasty custody dispute at the Supreme Court level. He’s our #1 guy since Day One. Our first rescue from our first litter. The first baby we brought back to life. Our Patriarch Dad Cat. The one who teaches all the others how to cat properly. 🧔

That one worn out, ripped up, shredded toy, full of holes, that needs to be thrown out, but you have one cat who still loves it. He thinks no one can see him when he’s in it, even though he’s so big that his entire butt and tail stick out the back when he’s ā€œhiding.ā€

Briseis - looking Pharoanic wouldn’t you say? - is wearing her new silver ā€œStarry Nightā€ name tag, which I 🩵 so so much that I placed a custom order of ā€œStarry Nightā€ name tags for all of my rescues. It’s made of brightly polished stainless steel and has little stars al@over the front. Their names will be on the front and their dates of rescue will be on the back. The tags and some other charms I have will become a long silver necklace that I can wear with everything, keeping my rescued kitties with me all the time! Stay tuned for the reveal!

The Sisters are now 4 1/2 months old and we are STILL working on their eyes. Good Lord…Talk about a loooong-term project! It’s a constant pivot for me, as I change meds and alter treatments, trying to figure out the right combinations of meds and methods that allows them to keep their eyeballs, even though their sight is limited (Amal) or gone (Sabrine). Sabrine still has another rupture to endure, I’m afraid. Her case has been particularly challenging, since she has not only had repeated ruptures, she also has two ulcers that won’t respond to treatment, as you can see in the photo. She’s comfortable and happy, very playful, so please don’t worry for her. She’s a very happy kittenšŸ’™

My goal has always been to have the same result with them as I had with Briseis, but Briseis’s eyeballs healed very differently than The Sisters’ have. Their eyeballs have disappeared for the most part, and the socket is sunken in, and it waters constantly. Infections come back faster, and it always feels like there’s an open wound that will never heal. So now, as they approach the time (and appropriate weight) to get them spayed, I am considering the option of sewing the eye sockets shut. It’s not what I wanted, but I am starting to feel like it’s the best way to get their eyes totally healed. But just so you know, they LOVE to rub their watery eyeballs on us. It’s the highest form of affection šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«šŸ˜„

Stay tuned.
