▶️ Retroalimentación negativa (Feed Back): Luego de remover las gónadas eliminamos la regulación a la baja que ejercen las hormonas sexuales sobre la pituitaria y el hipotálamo.

▶️ Como consecuencia directa de esto, la producción y el nivel de Hormona Luteinizante (LH) pueden aumentar hasta 20 veces en relación a un animal entero.

▶️ La principal función de la LH persigue fines reproductivos: ovulación, formación del cuerpo lúteo, estimulación de la producción de hormonas sexuales. Cuando la LH se une a su receptor induce la división celular y estimula la producción de óxido nítrico.

▶️ Se ha demostrado la presencia de receptores de LH en múltiples tejidos no relacionados con la reproducción (corteza adrenal, vasos sanguíneos, ligamentos cartílagos huesos, tracto urinario inferior, tejido linfoide, piel, glándula tiroides).

▶️ El aumento de los niveles de LH, puede tener implicancias en la salud de los animales, al unirse a receptores de células no relacionadas con la reproducción.

▶️ La estimulación de los receptores de LH en el hipotálamo ventromedial inducen hiperfagia (Daniel et al., 2013; Rozkowska&Fonberg, 1973).

If you are unsure about handling feral cats in the practice, then this article in the recent Feline Focus journal is for you!

"The only time a truly feral cat visits a veterinary practice is when it is presented for neutering as part of a trap–neuter–return (TNR) programme. For staff safety, these animals should never be removed from their cages for medical examination or procedures without sedation. Considering this lack of veterinary practice exposure, the maximum length of confinement for a feral cat is ideally around 24–36 h. During this time, routine neutering, simple medical treatments and postoperative convalescence can be carried out. Beyond this time, it is likely that feral cats that are confined will begin to suffer.

Make sure you work closely with your colleagues to ensure trapping happens just before neutering slots, allowing them to be released later the same day or early the next morning. Medical procedures that require repeated contact, prolonged confinement and repeated sedation or anaesthesia should not be carried out on feral cats.

Veterinary professionals should not be partaking in any neutering scheme where the cats are released at a different location from capture. Cats should be stored in a quiet environment in covered, escape proof cages. If examination reveals a medical condition that cannot be effectively treated in a short time frame, or without the need for repeated anaesthesia, then euthanasia is probably the better option."
