The importance of starting to trim your foals hooves at an early age.

A lot of the problems horses have with their hooves could have been prevented with the proper hoofcare, nutrition and movement from the day they were born.

Foals usually don’t move enough. When a foal is born their hooves are smaller than that of a grown up horse. The pressure they get from different kind of surfaces will ensure the bones will take its rightful form. If the bones stay to narrow, it can cause problems in the future.

Horses are ment to walk between 15-30 kilometers a day. They don’t walk on soft surfaces, but are used to walking on hard, uneven and challenging ground. Even foals have to walk over these surfaces to follow the herd form day one. This ensures the foals get very strong hooves and tendons.

Donderdag ga ik weer naar Nederland. De weken vliegen voorbij. Voelt alsof ik er vorige week nog was maar het is toch echt alweer 6 weken geleden.
Wil jij nog een afspraak maken? Ik heb nog een paar plekjes vrij.

Warning! Don’t scroll trough the photos if you don’t like blood!

Last week my horse was lame on his two front feet. They were also very warm en he had a strong digital pulse. Laminitis was my first thought. He kept getting worse and could hardly move around.
So I ordered some leeches.
After the leeches had done their work he was only lame on one foot. A couple days later an abscess broke out. Luckily he is no longer lame!

Guess I didn’t need the leeches after all but they work for a lot of things, so it didn’t do any harm.

Do you have a horse suffering from laminitis? Or do you have a horse who had it? Did you use leeches or have you not heard of them before?

Ps I only applied them on my own horse with the help of a friend, I will never use them on client horses.

Even the worst hooves can change. We’re not there yet but I can tell you this horses is walking a lot better!

Busy week
Yesterday I trimmed 7 horses in the Valencia region
Today 7 in La Nucìa
Tomorrow 12 in Javea
And Friday 2 also in Javea, on this day I am available to trim some more.

My horse can’t walk on hard surfaces without shoes, because his hooves don’t grow fast enough. This is something I often hear. I believe every horse can go without shoes, but not every horse owner can. It takes a lot of time (and persistence from the owner) for a horse to adjust to different surfaces or getting more movement on hard grounds. A hoof that gets stimulated will grow faster. But you have to give it time and maybe support the horse by using hoofboots for instance. This horse was last trimmed 6 weeks ago, he lives in a pasture with stones and goes out riding on pavement, rocks and gravel. His hooves have adjusted to the surroundings and grow really fast. So next time I’ll trim him a bit earlier 😉

New healthier growth 😁
I took this horse of his shoes in December. He had really flat and sore hooves with a lot of cracks. His frogs were really underdeveloped and he had trush.
Do you see how the angle of his hoof grow has changed?
We have about half a year to go before his whole hoof has grown out 💪🏻

Also the rest of his life has changed. He was in a stable 23/7 and ate really bad hay.
Now he is outside 24/7 with a good quality of hay.

He has boots on when he goes out walking/ riding.

It’s a long process but with the right care and patience we will get there 👊🏻
