Beaten to within inches of his life by the hunter, bones broken and left for dead behind Paradise. Lucky died following amputation of his leg.
We at Paradise will never give up on the Galgos. We are their voice and we will shout long and loudly to free them from the hunter’s abuse. Please share this post on this day that is “El Día del Galgo”, The Day of the Galgo.

She was signed over to us complete with a green and a blue passport, full of name transfers. Every time this girl has had a season, a litter of puppies will have followed and so will a change of ownership. She’s an undernourished, tired little girl, very gentle and trusting, covered in fleas, no hair on her tail. She’s about 6 years old and will have suffered for each and every one of those years.
Under the “Lucky Legacy” banner, we can promise “Lucky” Lois that this is where the nightmare stops. No more pain, no more puppies. She’s safe now.

At the moment, Lacey is being allowed to just relax and realise she’s in a safe place. It’s still too soon for Colleen to remove the chain. This will be done when she’s comfortable in Colleen’s company. Gently, Gently.

Lacey is one of the lucky ones. Clearly very neglected she has a chain round her neck which indicates her past has most likely been with a hunter, but more latterly she has been in a shelter which has not been good for her. Luckily an English lady who volunteers there has brought her to us at Paradise. This fragile little girl is stick thin and not in good shape. As soon as she’s able, we’ll arrange a Vet visit but today she’s just being left to settle and tomorrow the chain will be removed. This will hopefully be the last reminder of her past as the healing process begins.

The Gypsy Man’s been calling 😩

“The Gypsy Man” as Colleen calls him arrived in this extreme heat with two female Galgos locked in the boot of his car. One has a nasty wound on her neck and both have dog bites on their bodies. Lucky Lindy and Lucky Lara are very happy to be with us. They’ve hardly stopped eating, drinking and wagging their tails. These two will need some Vet work done with help from our Lucky Legacy fund.
The day before yesterday a lovely brindle boy arrived. So that’s three in two days. This is just a brief preview. We’ll get some more daylight photos for you during the week.

Lucky was beaten and battered by a heartless hunter. His nose was broken, his head and body suffered numerous heavy blows and for good measure to make sure he could go nowhere, the hunter smashed his right tibia and fibula. He then drove past our kennel gates and unceremoniously dumped him behind our back wall where he might or might not be found. The kennel dogs alerted Colleen Jay the kennel owner to look around the boundary walls where she found a beautiful black Galgo, limp and lifeless. Determined, Colleen grabbed a blanket and managed to lift him into the back of her van. She sped to the Vet with only one thing on her mind and that was to save him. She called him Lucky. Lucky that the dogs barked, that she found him and had the strength to lift him and lucky because it was the day that the visiting Orthopaedic surgeon was present.
For five days, little by little his condition improved. He was a determined trusting soul and we had high hopes of a full recovery. Unfortunately there was a setback and it was decided that the very badly broken leg would have to be amputated. Lucky survived for a day and a half after his operation. He was only a year old, undernourished and his short little life was no doubt lived in misery but he knew love at the end. He had a determined spirit and hundreds of people willing him to survive but the violence inflicted upon him broke his body, spirit and soul.
We at Paradise Rescue Kennels will not let the death of Lucky be in vain, his legacy must live on. Our kennels are in the middle of hunting country, we have over a hundred dogs here, many of which are hunting dogs. Galgos and Podencos are never turned away. We rehabilitate them and rehome them. We give them hope. We will continue to fight for the voiceless, we will push in any way we can for the laws against animal cruelty to change but more importantly, push for these laws to be enforced and for the hunters not to be above them.
Many young Spanish people are turning the tide, joining together for change, in the name of our precious Lucky, we must stand with them.
