Dear Friends💚
On September 14th, the Animal Liberation March 2024 will take place in Warsaw. This is a very important event, so we decided to share a few words about it and mention the history of the March in Poland.
Fighting for the rights and liberation of animals is something you, humans, can do through various actions, including taking to the streets, protesting, and manifesting. Just as people have always fought for their rights, for the abolition of different forms of exploitation, discrimination, and slavery, as well as for changes in societal awareness.
The annual Animal Liberation March is a fight for the rights of beings other than humans—those who, by the misfortune of being born into different bodies, have their lives taken from them. This year, the march will be held on September 14th, as usual, in Warsaw.
A bit of history for those who may not know: The first official Polish Animal Liberation March was organized in collaboration with the British organization Surge and took place in 2018. It was brought to Poland by two wonderful women, Ela Mikucka and Betty Oberska. They also came up with the idea of organizing the Polish premiere of the film Dominion: Documentary, screened in various cities. Ela has been the mastermind behind numerous actions, demonstrations, and protests, which she organized together with Betty and Anna Złocka. Subsequent Animal Liberation Marches were held each year, except in 2020 when the pandemic prevented its organization. Attendance grew year by year, with more and more co-organizers joining the cause.
In our view, the most successful march was in 2021. It was a day when activism made a lot of noise, filling the streets and squares, raising the cry for Liberation and Revolution. At that time, the girls discussed with Ela what would happen if we took to the streets by the thousands every month, demanding recognition of animal rights. Would we be noticed, heard, or still ignored?
For the past two years, personal circumstances have forced Ela to step back from organizing this uplifting event, but she always says the march is her "activist baby."
So, we’ll share her words to encourage you to participate in this year’s march. These words should drive you to join:
"If you are convinced that animals face great injustice, if you believe that we can still build a better world without violence, where respect for the diversity and uniqueness of each existence is possible, don’t let others fight for this without your participation. Every action you take; every presence you have, adds value to the actions and presence of others, and together they create a huge force that pushes us closer to the goal of their liberation."
