Sometimes we notice that our dog or someone’s dog is moving their head away from us or doesn’t want us to touch them. This is an example of how our dog moves their head because maybe they don’t really want to be touched at that moment. Why do you think this happens?

MY DOG DOESN'T LIKE CERTAIN DOGS?

This statement is not uncommon to hear and is actually understandable, there could be a number of reasons, colour of the other dog! If black maybe they can't read facial expressions or the body language.

WILL TRAINING HELP MY DOG LIKE OTHER DOGS?

Training will not change your dogs mind but it will help with controlling situating between dogs, being able to call a dog away is the first step.

WHAT IF I HAVE CONFLICT WITHIN MY HOME WITH TWO DOGS?

Dogs can learn to tolerate each other but it needs to be carefully managed making sure they are calm at all times, any over play, people visiting or the door bell ringing will cause a higher arousal which could result in them turning on each other.
This can differ depending on the personality and size of the dogs, ie a submissive dog could be living a nightmare if they feel threatened on a daily basis.

Issues within the home have to be managed, scolding dogs is likely going to make the situation worse.
Supervision is a must and dog gates (baby gates) are a definite go too.

CAN DOGS JUST DECIDE TO DISLIKE EACH OTHER?

The answer is yes but is likely due to changes within the home or with the dogs themselves.
For instance pain in a dog can change how they feel, older dogs for instance who are experiencing joint pain can be more reactive towards other dogs within the home.

On a personal note meet Mika and X**a, both rescues and similar in age, not something I would recommend with two girls but it's a long story of how I ended up with these two together. Do they like each other? The answer is no, do they fight? Again no because as soon as we saw the signs we implemented changes around the house. These two have been together now for over 7 years and have learnt to live around each other happily without supervision.

Is it upsetting to see family dogs not get on? 100% yes, should we be disappointed in them? Definitely not.

My family and I have just joined DogTraining Costa Blanca’s beginners course and I’m loving it. We are learning so much together 👫❤️🐕 which will set me on course for being the best behaved puppy ever.
