Waiting for my flight. A few people at the airport with dogs. Mostly small dogs. Being carried around like handbags.

A dog isn't a toy or an accessory. They do have their dignity. Stop taking it away from them.

Furthermore carrying your dog in your arms sends wrong signals and might potentially make your dog reactive in a resource guarding way.

Just. Stop. Please.

It's getting hotter. Summer is already here. How about those nervous and/or reactive dogs that require a muzzle?

Muzzles can be a great tool. Like with any other tool the devil is in which one we choose and how we use it.

Because dogs thermoregulate (maintain their body temperature) by panting and drinking when they get hot you need to choose a muzzle that will enable your dog to do just that. It needs to be big enough to let your dog open it's mouth comfortably to pant and drink.

Veterinary muzzle that I see more often than I'd like to (the fabric ones that cover most of the dogs snout and hold the mouth closed) are a very bad choice that can cause actual harm to your dog (sun stroke, dehydration, unnecessary stress and anxiety to name a few). Buy a basket muzzle that fits loosely on your dog and isn't restricting opening of the mouth or drinking.

Veterinary muzzle like the name suggest ate good in a clinical environment when they're being used for a short time that it takes to examine the dog.

Do your dog a favour and get a proper muzzle.
Condition your dog to that muzzle.
Enjoy walks with your muzzled dog.

This happened literally just now.
Was minding my own business with two reactive dogs at the dog park. A man with two golden retrievers walks in and wants to step into the play pen we were in. I walked up and explained that these doge are not friendly with other dogs and would he mind giving us 10min. He said that he only has 30min of break to which I responded that that's fine. I'll leave with my dogs. When I was putting leads on my doge the person started talking to someone who was in the other playpen and telling them that my dogs look like pitbulls and they are dangerous and shouldn't be allowed in Gibraltar. When I was ready to vacate the playpen I asked the man would he mind stepping out to give us more room. I was told by both the man and a woman in the other playpen that asking this is ridiculous, that if I can't handle my dogs I shouldn't have dogs like these. And again that pitbulls are not allowed in Gibraltar. I asked the other man why was he making such a big deal of someone asking him to make room? That this is absolutely normal as I'm trying to minimise the probability of a bad experience for everyone. To which I was told to get out of the dog park because he's just gonna start walking towards me with his dogs and if my dogs would attack he'll call police on me and I'm gonna get jailed because pitbulls are not allowed in Gibraltar.

If the person is reading this I hope your dogs got a great workout and you had good time playing with them. But at the end of the day you're the one who was willing to put your dogs at risk to be able to call the police on me.

I try very hard bot to judge other trainers and their methods as everyone has their own philosophy, skill level and different preference as far as the tools of the trade go.
Having said that I won't refrain from commenting on something I might find not cool. And this clip is exactly that.
This is a perfect example of how NOT to use a prong collar. And this comes from someone who uses prongs and is not at all opposed to prongs.
What we see here just after the correction is given is an instant change in posture and body language of the dog. Tail goes down, ears go back, looking at the dogs back you can see it's tensed, eyes are scared. I repeat this is NOT how you use a prong.
Every tool I use is a meant fir communicating. A prong, a halti, a slip lead etc. are there to help instruct and inform the dog. But first you need to teach the dog to understand the language. You need to condition the dog before you start correcting unwanted behaviours. And you always need to reinforce good behaviours in a positive way.
And I'm certain David knows that. That's why he coughs nervously just after the dog squeals.

Now. Have I ever been tok harsh with a dog? Yes I have. Probably the majority of people training their dogs and most dog trainers have been too harsh with a dog. The important thing is to be able to admit that and learn from it. Not try to double down on something that was clearly a mistake.

Now I think David is a very good dog trainer. I've watched his podcasts and his training videos and I learned a lot from him and trainers working with him. Unfortunately this time he slipped up. Happens to the best of us. We have a saying in Poland that people who don't make mistakes are people who don't do anything.

Today was a very emotional day as we said goodbye to this beautiful soul. After living for God knows how long behind a dumpster of a petrol station @sarahlouisebray + @bray_properties took her in and gave her all their love. They allowed me to be a part of their journey of teaching Betty what it means to be a happy, well behaved and all rounded dog. Today was our last training session as tomorrow Betty sets of on a journey to her new home. We all wish her the best of luck and all that's best in the world as she definitely deserves it. Godspeed Betty. You're a special girl. Live. Love. Train. 🐺💜😊

This is why you use smart toys with your dogs. Not only is she getting bite exercise, she's getting tired physically but also it's a mental challange that pushes her to having to figure out a way to get to her fav treat. This releases stress and anxiety and makes her more tired than any physical activity would.

I know that April is Autism Awareness Month but since we're waiting for a diagnosis and it's also dog related I'm gpnna ppst it anyhow. 🙂

Going away for vacation I knew I had to have someone to cover for me with my client. And I was a bit worried as my dogs are peculiar and need the right attitude. This is my friend Rachel walking Pearl. Pearl is still reactive towards other dogs. And we share a strong bond of love and trust.
