El Alano Español es descendiente directo de los perros de presa llegados a la Península Ibérica con las tribus alanas en el siglo V, tras la caída del Imperio Romano.
Este tipo de perro era muy versátil y se usaba para la guerra, la caza y la conducción y agarre del ganado. Posteriormente, se efectuarían cruces con diferentes tipos de dogos y lebreles. Los Alanos se convirtieron en una de las razas favoritas de la nobleza y los Reyes en España, llegando a hacerse una exhaustiva descripción del perro en el tratado La Montería del Rey Alfonso XI, editado en 1350.
Su temperamento, valor y fidelidad lo hicieron también inseparable de los Ejércitos españoles y participó en la Conquista de América, influyendo en el desarrollo de razas locales como el Dogo Argentino o el Cimarrón Uruguayo.
A finales del siglo XIX, la raza experimenta un serio declive que, aunque mejora algo con la fundación de la Real Sociedad Canina de España, se mantendrá hasta las últimas décadas del siglo XX, cuando se inicia una labor de recuperación, localizando un
núcleo importante de ejemplares en la zona de Las Encartaciones y otras provincias como Ávila, Zamora, Salamanca y Extremadura, donde se le seguía utilizando para el agarre
del ganado bovino.
