LUDO'S UPDATE🙏🧡
As promised, we will update you about our brave boy Ludo 🙏

After several X-rays at Hospital de Referencia La Equina ,we received a diagnosis for Ludo. He has degenerative joint disease, also known as osteoarthritis, in his right shoulder (scapulohumeral joint). This condition causes continuous friction between the bones while he walks, resulting in intense pain. His unstable and awkward gait is a result of trying to avoid putting weight on his painful right paw.

To help manage the pain, Ludo will be given anti-inflammatories and will undergo an infiltration to see if it can alleviate his discomfort. From there, we will assess the possibility of any additional injuries in his legs. We're doing everything we can to help him feel better 🙏♥️

🌟 Our rescue center is open again! 🌟

We hope everyone had a wonderful New Year! During our 10-day closure, we’ve been busy giving our terrace a fresh coat of paint and showing some love to our furniture. We've also created a cozy new coffee corner for visitors to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee or cappuccino ☕

The donkeys are back out on their walks today, and both they and our visitors are having a great time! A perfect way to kick off the new year. Come visit us and start 2025 with some donkey joy! 🐾💖

A gala charity event was held at La Scala in Marbella on the night of Thursday, December 19, attended by a whole host of personalities and some donkeys too.

Our Latest Rescue 🌿💪

Just 10 days ago, we were contacted by about a donkey left alone in poor conditions. Last Friday, after our charity dinner, we went to rescue him.

Initially, we hoped to take him straight to our rescue center but given his size, youth and the fact that he hasn't been castrated and our fences need to be repared, would have been too risky.🙏

Instead, we decided to bring him to a nearby finca where he’ll undergo quarantine and be surrounded by horses 😊. During this time he'll be fully dewormed and gain some weight. 🙏🧡 He’ll join us at the end of January! 🧡🙏

Irene from , who has been providing him with care and companionship since she found him, named him Enano. 😊

Over the next few days we’ll share his difficult and lonely story, which, sadly, is far too common in some areas around us. We want you to fully understand the reality of animal welfare in these regions. 🙏

What a wonderful way to wrap up the year 2024! Today, our donkeys enjoyed a lovely walk with our visitors, bringing smiles to everyone who joined in. 🐾💖

Thank you all so much for your incredible support throughout 2024. Your visits, kind words and energy have meant the world to us. Now, it's time for us to take a short break to enjoy the holidays with our family, friends, and loved ones.

We’ll be closed for the holiday season but will reopen on Thursday January 2nd, 2025.

Our sweet and brave boy Ludo is doing well after his castration. He has shown incredible courage and he is recovering well ♥️

We are all so proud of our little man who is dealing with his daily treatments like a champ ♥️

Also, we are open again for visits. Come by and cuddle with our amazing rescue donkeys. Our rescue center is open Wednesdays till Sundays between 10.00 and 13.00.

LUDO'S CASTRATION💪🙏
We have finally been able to castrate Ludo. Yesterday,after our christmas fair,our animal welfare team was ready to assist Joaquin, our vet and proceed with the castration.🙏
As we told you before, Ludito had to wait almost 4 months for his castration😓

The state of malnutrition in which he arrived, along with his weak legs, put his life in danger in this surgery🙏

It is being difficult for all of us to see him separated from his companions, and to keep him in our stable area protected from others...but it is all for his own good🧡

Ludo was semi-sedated during the intervention and our team ensuring he felt in familiar hands at all times🧡

Patricia, Montse and Stephane attended our vet and then passed on the information to the rest of the volunteers about their cures and need for controlled walks for optimal drainage and healing of the wound.🌿🧡

We will inform you of his recovery...he still has many days of cures left and a little pain when doing them...but we know he understands that everything is to ensure he can become the healthy and calm donkey we always imagine.

🍂🧡Welcome Afera🧡🍂
We love explaining the stories of the animals we have at the sanctuary.

That sweet soul you see on the photo is Afera🧡
She is only 5 years old has been with us for almost a month.
Janet,her owner,adopted Afera when she was still young, before she was even one year. Janet was looking for a companion for her mare who had been left alone, when Afera crossed her path,and of course,she felt in love with her.

She owns land near Coín and had all the time and love in the world to dedicate to her animals.
Afera has grown up in a perfect environment, with the care and attention that all animals deserve🌿🧡

Sadly she contacted us through a mutual friend because she could no longer take care of her equines due to a serious injury in her back.

Unfortunately we do not rescue horses🙏,we don't have the facilities or land necessary to give them the propper care, but Janet was convinced she wanted Afera to stay with us😊🙏, knowing that she would be in the best hands🧡
So she contacted a horse sanctuary and decided to give each of them a new home.
The same day we went to get Afera in Coín,the Horse Sanctuary team was also getting the mare,Afera's companion.
That way we avoid separation anxiety when an animal is left alone🙏🏻
Both Afera and her companion arrived at their respective new homes on the same day.😊

Afera felt a bit home sick the first days,missing her owner and her companion...but soon she was too busy meeting new donkeys and volunteers,being part of our walks and activities as if she had been here for years!!🙏

After a few months we will see which other donkey she has an affinity with and only then we will start the process to find her an adoption home according to her character, age and needs...but first, as always,we will wait for her to bond with another of our animals,to make sure she is accompanied for the rest of her life.🍂

Meanwhile, Afera enjoys every moment of the day. She loves cuddles, hugs, walks and it is a privilege to spend time with her.

He has been with us for 5 months now!
Seeing and feeling his process and recovery daily is an experience that the entire DD team has the privilege to be part of🧡

Ludito is little by little becoming a brave donkey, who faces his fears daily, but he no longer needs to try to bite all the volunteers as a defense!!!🙏

Now he faces his fears in a calmer and more mature way, fruit of his observation to the rest of our donkey tribe during these months.
This is how he had to learn how to "be a donkey."
He did it from his privileged balcony with views of the rest of the paddoks.

He has been learning from his future companions, from their behaviour, interactions and walks we do with our donkeys.

Ludo,always observing, learning and showing us...how ready he is to be one more donkey amongst the rest!!!🙏🧡

That day,Ludito,is getting closer and closer😊

We just can't wait to mix him with the tribe🧡

His next test to overcome will be his castration this Friday.
We have had to wait all this time given the degree of malnutrition we found him with. Now that he has gained that necessary strength, Ludo will demonstrate once again that he is a champion💪

Su siguiente prueba a superar será su castración este Viernes.

Hemos tenido que esperar todo este tiempo dado el grado de desnutrición con el que lo encontramos.

Ahora que ya ha cogido esa fuerza necesaria,Ludo demostrará de nuevo,que es un campeón😊💪

New Family Member! 🧡🍃🍂 Meet ROMERO!

Romero has been with us for a month now and we're so happy to welcome him to the family! He comes from a lovely home in Niguelas, Granada, where his previous owners reached out for help. Romero had become a bit too much for his mum, Margarita, a very sweet and elderly donkey.

We've seen similar situations before. When it's just a mother and foal living together without other donkeys, it can sometimes be better to separate them after the foal turns one. Now at 2 years old, Romero is reaching adulthood and over the past few months, his behavior toward Margarita had become challenging—he even tried to jump on her when she went into heat! 😓

Margarita finally had enough and made it clear that she needed her space. Which is completely understandable!

Now Romero is with us where he can grow into adulthood, meet new donkeys and allow his mum to enjoy a peaceful, stress-free life in her golden years ♥️

Vida🧡
Our sweet donkey vida is struggling with the flies and has an allergic reaction.😓
We have been using some products to improove hydrating,using coconout oil and some other natural remedies but his hairless ears and back,did not improove much🙏
But our great volunteer Lynn brought this magic natural cream with tea tree oil and that mask last week😊
As you can see,Vida is not the happiest donkey now!😅
He must be thinking...ok,I understand the mask...but PINK?
Seriously?😁

We can't wait see the results of his treatment.

Celebrating the beauty of Andalucía🌹with our donkeys🌿

Last Wednesday we had the pleasure to be part of an event organized by Villa Padierna Palace Hotel 🏫

They were celebrating an Andalusian day and,of course, we went with our donkeys PACO and LUCIA🧡😉

We have been assisting with 2 of our donkeys for 2 years now and we always feel so welcome around their team!!
The respect they show for our animals,is beyond words🧡
It is an adventure, both for the donkeys and for our dedicated volunteers💪

This time, Patricia, Lisa and Vanessa made sure that both Paco and Lucìa felt at home being with them by their side during the event😊🙏🧡

They spended a calm morning eating grass and *carobs which is what donkeys in Andalucia have been eating for hundreds of years and was always a great supply to their diet.

Again, Anantara team...thanks for a beautiful morning and for the exposure you are giving to our mission through our collaborations 🌿🧡🙏

🌟Volunteer Spotlight 🌟

Adam is a part of our great volunteer team since October 2023. He joins us every Monday and Thursday to clean out the paddocks, take care off and cuddle with our donkeys ♥️ Secretly Paco is his favorite 🤫🤭.

"We visited in June 2023 with family and then again in September 23 with friends. I thought the energy of the place was very positive and knew that would like to be involved in the care of the donkeys.
I enjoy the physical aspect too. It’s a good workout cleaning out the paddocks and stables."

Fortunately, despite the heavy rain, we have no major damage. Our donkeys are in the stables or they can stay dry in one of the shelters in our paddocks.
