Rota Animal Welfare League - RAWL

Rota Animal Welfare League - RAWL Rota Animal Welfare League (RAWL) is a non-profit animal care facility on NAVSTA Rota military base sustained entirely by community donations and volunteers.

Our number one mission at RAWL is connecting animals with loving, caring, forever families. Rota Animal Welfare League (RAWL) is an animal shelter that finds homes for dogs and cats, and relies on volunteers of NS Rota, Spain to care for those animals.

Every Friday we like to place the spotlight on one of our available animals but for the first Friday of 2025, we figured we'd go big. Really big. Herculean, even.

(it's funny because one of their names is Hercules. Get it? Sorry, one of my resolutions for 2025 is to become a better comedian)

Now let's get serious.

Some dogs are easy to adopt out. Puppies, or cute little fluffy mutts never have much trouble finding a home.

Other dogs, however, present more of a challenge. And yet these are the dogs who most need a chance at a new home and a loving family.

Hercules and Negri have had a difficult life. These ten-year-old siblings were living in a crowded shelter, sharing a small enclosure surrounded by hundred of other dogs. RAWL agreed to take them in to try and give them a better chance at finding a home because we feel they deserve to live out their golden years surrounded by the love they've yet to experience so far.

And yet despite their history, these two adore people. They love going for walks and playing in RAWL's bark park. Despite their age, they're still active and more than ready for whatever adventures the day brings.

But Hercules and Negri would need a very special family, willing to accept the challenges that accompany any dog with a story like theirs. While they are both sweet and friendly, they are also smart and strong and insistent. They would need someone who knows how to handle larger dogs and who understands how impossible it was for them to learn perfect manners while stuck in a shelter with so many other dogs. We would NOT recommend Hercules and Negri go to a family with young children; while they are both affectionate and loving, they are INCREDIBLY strong and would be too much for a small child to handle. Hercules is also a little too interested in cats so he would do best in a home without any. They would need a house with a strong, secure fence because they're experts at breaking through less-sturdy restraints.

Hercules and Negri have been together their entire lives so obviously we would love if they could remain together, although we realize this might not be possible. If they are separated, it must be understood that there would be a period of anxiety while they adjusted. From our experience with them here at RAWL, we believe Negri would handle it far better; Hercules is very reliant on her and when we take them for separate walks, Negri adjusts rather quickly but Hercules is noticeably upset.

If someone DOES want to adopt both of them, RAWL will offer a reduced adoption fee.

We realize how difficult it is to find a home for these two; we know they come with challenges most people--understandably--aren't able to accommodate. They're not puppies. They're not tiny, adorable mutts. But they are the best evidence I've seen of how forgiving dogs can be, and how they continue to look to us for companionship and love.

We hold on to the hope that someone is willing to welcome them into their hearts and their home and give two old dogs a few final years of comfort and peace.

Welcome to 2025 everybody!

Smokey and Scooter are here to remind you that cats make awesome helpers when it comes to keeping those New Year's resolutions. Sure, they may not know much about going to the gym or financial planning but they're willing to learn...as long as you don't mind letting them sit on your lap while you explain!

These seven-month-old brothers are hoping 2025 brings them to their forever homes and families. Maybe yours?

Smokey and Scooter can be adopted together or individually. If you're interested in meeting them, send us a message to schedule an appointment!

Gobi hopes 2025 will bring him a home with his very own couch to sit on and his very own family to love.

Here at RAWL our resolution is to help all the animals in our care find loving homes. We are always looking for volunteers to assist us in accomplishing his goal. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please send us a message or plan to attend our next volunteer orientation on January 15, 2025 at 5pm.

Gobi believes no Sunday afternoon is complete without a good game of fetch! He's looking for the perfect playmate--maybe it's you?

Gobi is a friendly, active five-year-old Shar Pei mix who does well with older children and would prefer to be an only dog. If you're interested in meeting Gobi, send us a message to schedule an appointment!

Rota Animal Welfare League

In 1989, three like-minded friends combined their own individual efforts of helping homeless community animals into an organization. Thanks to their ceaseless hard work, private donations, and volunteer participation, RAWL has become a thriving and caring halfway home for animals that is unique among military installations. To date, RAWL has successfully re-homed more than 1000 cats and dogs with caring NAVSTA ROTA community individuals and families.

RAWL has been an integral part of the NAVSTA Rota community for more than 30 years. As a private organization, base approval is filed for annually. We have an elected volunteer board that provides oversight of operations at the shelter. Our animals come to RAWL from local shelters and partners as well as from individuals who can no longer care for their animals.

Due to our limited capacity in space, we are unable to take in stray animals and do not have an open admissions policy.
