Our story
Hipica Formentor is a natural horse care stables in northern Mallorca near to the town of Sa Pobla. It is close to the Albufera wildlife park, which is famous for its bird life, and lies in the agricultural area of the island where the famous Sa Pobla potatoes and rice are grown. There are also fields of cultivated sweet smelling herbs, cut flowers grown for sale in the markets and a host of other fruits and vegetables including artichokes, cabbages, pumpkins, grapes and melons.
The broad green plains are bordered with views of the mountains in two directions. The sunsets are stunning. The nearby Tramuntana mountains can be white with snow in the winter and are luminescent with often changing colours (particularly in the early evening) for the rest of the year. There is very little traffic in this area and there are sandy tracks to ride at the edges of the Albufera. We offer 90 minute rides and half day tapas rides stopping at authentic local bars for tapas and drinks.
The Tramuntana mountains can be reached on horse-back in three hours and there are all-day rides from the stables to Lluc Monastery with a lunch stop on the way and a wonderful three-day mountain trail on offer during the cooler months of the year. By special arrangement there are sometimes rides on the beach. As the horses have to be driven to the beach in a horsebox, there are subject to the weather and temperature and to the number of people who want to join in.
The stables are owned and managed by Lorenzo Crespi who has worked with horses for all of his life, including being a jockey’s groom at Newmarket in the UK during his youth. He is a trained farrier and bare hoof trimmer and also has qualifications in basic horse dentistry. He converted to a natural horse care regime seven years ago and now all of the horses are barehoof and bitless and eat a low sugar diet. He is working on a padock with small hills and a lake as horses love to climb and swim.
