Hi, my name is Judit and to make it short.. I love cats (but any animals in general). So there is a small cat colony in Buzanada, Tenerife. I look after them for 4 years now. In the end of summer of 2019, a new member joined the colony. The original members of the colony all had been neutered by the help of Cats Welfare a non-profit organization, but this new member was a very frighted young girl. She become pregnant, and gave birth before we could have the chance to neuter her. The mother was hiding very well the 4 kittens, could not found them on time. Without having human contact, they were very frightened when I try to approach them.
Meanwhile I managed to catch the mother and neuter her with the help of Cats Welfare (big thanks to Sharon Leighton)! When I returned her, she was well and I was trying to wait few days so she can calm down with the kittens around, after the stress. (Now, knowing what happened after.. I would have done it differently.) But she had different plans.. she moved the kittens from the place she gave birth (she considered me as a threat clearly even with food), and move them across a busy road.. she came to eat every time but I could not find again the kittens. After a week later, she did not come to eat.. and other day passed and nothing. I start to walk around, and found her road killed :( The next following week I was searching for the kittens, leaving food and water in different places till I got lucky! I spot the ginger brother.. left food there, he was super hungry.. Since they were very wild, I could not catch them by hand, I had to get a manual trap. Next day I went back and placed the trap with food inside. Also with a very cleaver idea I got from a volunteer of Cats Welfare, I started to play a video on YouTube.. where mum cat calling kittens :) At the same moment I played the video kittens started to fly towards to me :) I was like watching a wild life documentary.. the way the kittens understood that stranger cat mum call, I was shocked.. and amazed. Of course when they realized its me.. they stopped.. but they also felt the smell of the food.. so all moved into the trap without thinking and I quickly closed the door! Unfortunately only 3 found.. over a week, lots of danger around for small kittens, besides the insufficient food and water. But I could have saved 3 at least. I took them home and the adventure of taming for almost 3 months old kittens begone. It is not a very quick thing as others might think. They all have different personalities, all react differently. Rusty the ginger boy was the bravest and I could found a great family for him who already had a kitten and wanted a playmate :) But Sally and Gyps were very different. Gyps were very distant and even fought back when I try to groom and comfort her. She did not wanted any comfort except from her sister, Sally. Probably that’s why they have such a strong bond :) But later Sally started to trust us, and started to realize she has a good life :) that was a good example for Gyps and slowly she opened up for us too. She is still more independent but very playful and gorgeous. So thats where we are now, 7 months old sisters, who very much love each other. The short story with pictures will be on the timeline, to get to know them!
