Not dog related, but behaviour related. Rosita, the light coloured one in the centre, has never experienced a pond and couldn’t swim when we first took her. The first time we put her in the water she sank like a stone. The other turtles have been in with her for just over a week and she’s started to copy them 💕 She’s feeding now whilst swimming. You can see she’s not as competent (the others have been used to a pond environment) but every day she’s getting stronger and more confident.
Love watching any animal exploring and discovering natural behaviours.

He knows the sound of the end scraping of the peanut butter jar. Gordon’s special treat 💕 #lovedogs #chihuahua #peanutbuttertreat #classicalconditioning
Busy road, lots of different types of traffic. Just letting him take it all in.
I didn’t ask for a down. He’s just getting comfy if we’re going to be stood here a while 😁 I didn’t ask him to do anything, doing nothing is pretty much what I want. I want him to be able to be in noisy environments and not be bothered.
On a harness and loose lead. I’m not restraining him, making him stay by me, in the slightest.

She has to investigate anything new in the garden. That nose, 6 years without sight, is awesome! Didn’t plan out her exit strategy though 😁

Play. The benefits of playing with your dog are huge:
🔸Play releases rewarding brain opioids.
🔸Also the hormone serotonin which helps to control mood.
🔸Helps teach impulse control.
🔸Good for physical fitness.
🔸It’s tiring.
🔸It’s fun!
But, forget just throwing a ball for your dog. The most beneficial type of play is social play, that means play with you!
So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and play with your dog!

I’d like to say it’s because they love me that I get such an enthusiastic greeting, but really I’m just back from a puppy 121 (well 2 puppies 😁) and there’s nothing more exciting than the smell of puppies 🐾 #lovedogslanzarote #thenoseknows #scentofapuppy #letthemsniff
Hop on in progress
Dog trainers always post the ‘end result’. This might backfire on me, but I thought I’d show you an ‘in progress’.
I started this little session (and it really was only the couple of minutes here, I like super short sessions) with the intention of working on his ‘hop on’ (where he places his paws on mine ☺️ from a ‘peek-a-boo). I switch to positions (which we’ve never done from this angle, he’s usually facing me so much harder for him), then back to hop on.
It’s messy, he tells me a couple of times that he’s no idea what I’m on about and getting frustrated (hence the switch up to stuff he knows, albeit not in this position ), my feet placement is all off, there’s no way he could reach both feet even if he knew exactly what I wanted. But, progress has been made, next time we’ll be smoother, and it got his brain working for a few minutes.
There is a practice behind every polished, perfect performance you see 🐾
One of the most common worded questions from clients is ‘how do I stop my dog (barking, chasing, chewing, jumping......)?’ Sometimes we need to look at things from another angle. What would you like your dog to do instead? 5 minutes before these little videos were taken Arlo was overexcited, chasing and had punctured the ball. I had to take a step back. What would I like him to look like when the kids are playing with a ball? Rather than try and ‘stop’ him (a never ending battle) a tasty chew gives him a chance to practice the behaviour that we’d prefer to see. He’s happy, the kids are happy, I’m happy 😃 #lovedogslanzarote #trainingfortherealworld #dogtraining #realworlddogtraining #puppytraining

Note to self: black leggings make your black dog invisible 🤦♀️ @arlothebardino #blackdogsofinstagram #lovedogslanzarote #videofail #dogtraining #arlothebardino #dogtrainerlanzarote #lanzarotedogtrainer
Little bit of impulse control training this morning. I’m throwing out bread for the chickens and also reinforcing Arlo’s calm behaviour with the same treat. This type of training can easily create frustration, so we only do a few minutes at any one time. If your dog is the type to get frustrated, they very quickly get into the frame of mind where they’re not open to learning, and you end up battling with them. Every dog is individual and needs treating and training as such #impulsecontrol #lovedogslanzarote #dogtraining #puppytraining #reallifedogtraining
I don’t tend to video dogs getting it wrong, especially if there are other animals involved. I don’t like to set the dog up to fail, or practice the unwanted behaviours, just for the sake of a ‘before’ video, it’s unethical for the dog and for the other animals involved.
So, trust me when I tell you Arlo was a chicken chaser.
Happily today, after some work, he made the right choice around the flapping cockerel with no input from me 👏👏👏 @arlothebardino
