EQUINE TING POINTS (from Megan Wickersham)
Ting points or Jing-Well Points are are located roughly 1.5 cm proximal to the coronary bands on the distal limbs (With PC-9 and KI-1 being located between the bulbs of the heels). Including palpation of these points into your exam can yield valuable information as well as therapeutic benefit when treated.
Microcirculatory changes within these points may be felt as pitting edema that leaves a depression in acute conditions or as a dry hollow, in deficient/chronic conditions. Stimulation of these points can affect the entire meridian, including the associated Shu point as well as energetically related meridians.
These points are palpated with the tip of the finger or thumb at a 90 degree angle to the skin. Use the same pressure to palpate all points. For accurate diagnosis, the opposite limb pair must also be weight bearing (ie. both fronts or both hinds) so that circulatory pressure is equal.
Treatment of Ting points may include dry needle, laser, or by bleeding the point. Bleeding of Ting points should only be utilized in excess conditions, not for deficiencies.
The Yin Ting points (LIV, KID, SP, LU, PC, and HT) belong to the Wood element. Due to the propensity for the Wood element to have stagnation and resultant fire/heat affecting the Shen, these points can be used for mental illness issues, especially HT-9, PC-9 and LU-11.
The Yang Ting points (TH, SI, LI, ST, BL, and GB) belong to the Metal element. Metal controls Wood, so use of these points can aid in treatment of liver Qi stagnation.
